I think I paced Paris13 and Valencia very evenly, with about 15 seconds separating fastest and slowest miles In Valencia. It's difficult to do that in North London with it being so up n down. Plus the guys in the club go too fast. Thankfully ditched them at Hyde park and LSR'd it back at a more sensible pace. It was steady today for a while but not uncomfortable.
TD speaks wisely of even pacing. There's no need for heroics, just stick to a pace that you know you are capable of and if you look at the watch and see you are speeding up, then slow down your breathing and relax a bit. If you over cook it in the early miles the marathon won't give it back to you later on.
21 miles and it was my most enjoyable run ever, possibly because it was such a pleasure to be running in sunshine. I mentally replaced landmarks, thus Blackpool tower became the Eiffel, Madame Tussaud's the Louvre and suchlike. Lots of fuel but I think what also made the difference was the 2 ibuprofen at mile 16. Never done that before but I always feel extremely creaky and stiff by about 17 miles and I didn't today. I wasn't fast, but what the hell, 1st time guarantees a pb, doesn't it?
Having another wave of pre-Paris extreme excitement!
Kirsten - we have a few Doctors on this forum. Iain Moore specialises in kidneys and has done a paper on Ibuprofen and running. One of his suggestions was to avoid using ibuprofen during exercise. If you have pain, go with paracetamol.
Spitfire - yes. These drugs are nasty. Stomach related side effects, which may include ulceration and bleeding. Kidney side effects which may include kidney failure (there is already enough pressure on your kidneys from a marathon without drugs making it worse). The cardiac side effects are now recognised to be much more of a problem.
I still fail to underdstand how you can buy these drugs over the counter - in a petrol station if you want!
Avoid - they do not mix well with marathoning!
I don't want to frighten you but this man knows his stuff
Sounds reasonable, although I take painkillers so rarely that the odd couple shouldn't hurt. Paracetamol should do just as well. Thanks for that, Orbutt.
Great to see everyone doing excellent long runs in the sunshine
No long run for me today as I was at Eton Dorney yesterday for the Garmin Race Your Pace half. Still in shock - 1:29:31 a 4 and a half minute PB. Now daring to dream that sub 3:30 could just be on the cards in Paris.
Just popped in to see how you are all doing. Loads of good running going on here.
Jimbob - I must have missed you as you were so speedy running down from North London this morning. There is no way that I could keep up with the pace you were running at. It was rather nice down by the Thames and the horse guards were making their way back up past the Palace as I made my way back towards Hyde Park. 16 miles today in 2:10:25.
Looks like a lot of folk racked up some good miles today. I planned on doing 20 today, woke up ill and have been out for the count all day. Was planning a reduced miles week this week, but might just dump my short LSR next weekend for this weeks failed 20.
19 miles today, 9 yesterday, 7 the day before and 6 the day before that. I think these 4 day "weekends" are getting to me as today's run was not great. The hills were getting to me - I usually power up these hills but today it was just hang on and plod my way to the top. Not sure what's going on - but have a cut back week this week and I'm going to cut way, way back.
On a brighter side, BRF ran with e and that girl is a changed runner. She is powerful and fit. Paris....look out.
Mornin' all. Very jealous of the LSRs. I bonked about 4km from the end of my miserly 32km bike ride yesterday. But I've still made good progress - I didn't fall off!
And it was very impressive seeing TD so strong. His return to form is something to behold.
As for running, I continue to feel like Calvin at the end of this comic...
HS - it gets easier. And you can always get a piggyback
Well done Malcs, Andy, tmbrntt,
Hope the sick bay empties soon
Stuchbury - have a look at Triggerpoint rollers. They've got a plastic pipe inside so they're sturdier than cheap foam ones and don't lose their shape. Plus when you take it in luggage you can put stuff inside (porridge pots fit perfectly in them).

My illness/ cutback week saw me running a mere 5 miles yesterday/ last week! Up at KOC this morning, but unsafe running conditions so hoping I will have time later.... Anyway KOC got me caught up on housework and the washing pile! Every cloud and all.....
Malcs - that's a cracking time, well done. Eggy - at least that kind of lurgy doesn't tend to last as long, so once your stomach settles down you'll be back up and running. Make sure you get some chicken soup down you once you feel like eating again.
Dannir - I know what you mean. Very glad to have a day off today.
HS - it does, it really does. And even if it doesn't there's always the taper to look forward to.
Many thanks everyone for the advice on stride length and cadence. All of which makes perfect sense. I have 2 shorter easy runs planned for this week and I will put into practice what you have said and report back with my findings. Not sure I'll want to fully commit to it until after the marathon but we'll see how the trial runs go!
Following my post yesterday I headed out for my longest LSR ever - 20 miles. With a proper porridge for breakfast and a gel every 4 miles I managed to keep a consistent pace throughout. Last 3 miles were tough, but that is to be expected. Hit my peak mileage of 48 for the week (Another PB). 22 next week, drop back to 16, then 22, followed by 20 including the Fleet half, and then its taper time! How did that get here so fast?!

This is a post he made before the Berlin marathon
I don't want to frighten you but this man knows his stuff
Sounds reasonable, although I take painkillers so rarely that the odd couple shouldn't hurt. Paracetamol should do just as well. Thanks for that, Orbutt.
Some good running going on this weekend - can't believe its only 7 weeks to go!
Did 20 miles yesterday morning in the wind @ 7:20 pace (was dreading it all through the whole night whilst hearing the gales!).
Was planning to race the Droitwich Half Marathon in a fortnight as part of my preperations but got cancelled yesterday due to floods.
I don't think I could even manage 2 miles at 7:20 pace
Will someone please tell me it gets easier?
But it hurts. Sulk.
Arghh, where does all the time go?
Great to see everyone doing excellent long runs in the sunshine

Which running club do you run with ?
Well done Malcs, that's one heck of a PB!
It'll be fine and dandy in Corcorans, honey
Malcs - do some training and you'll smack the arse out of 3:30 with a HM time like that
Malcs - Great running.

get well soon Eggy. Radar Sal has been spreading her germs all over the interweb it seems
Thanks, just wanting to get past the being able to eat something without it flying out my mouth at warp speed stage five minutes later!
Eggy - ah, that kind of ill! Not pleasant but better than the dreaded manflu I find. Hope you're feeling better soon.
helterskelter - thanks! Sorry to hear you're not right. Feel for anyone injured or ill at the moment.
yer maj -
I was looking for Corcorans on the map the other day - there seem to be several? Which one is the chosen one?
Carl: London Heathside

Morning all,
Awesome running over the weekend.
Eggy - I hope you feeling better soon.
HS - I think Greg Lemond summed it up best with "it never gets easier, you just go faster".
Well I managed to eat breakfast this morning and nothing has exited my body at warp speed, so hi-ho it's back to work I go!
Many thanks everyone for the advice on stride length and cadence. All of which makes perfect sense. I have 2 shorter easy runs planned for this week and I will put into practice what you have said and report back with my findings. Loads of running. Well done, everyone who got out. Malcs, you must be delighted.
Weedy, I've registered for the Team Macperky Tri in Loch Lomond. I've almost forgotten last year's near-death experience there...
Eggy, I'm not sharing this injury bench with you!
