SK - I'm sure that's taper madness.   Put your feet up and have another caramel waffle :)  If you have a gentle knee support put that on.

It's a good job I'm off work otherwise I'd never be able to keep up with this thread!

Cal/Jugula - Do you think massages make a difference? I've never had one as I couldn't afford it (saying that not sure how much they cost here) and I just couldn't be bothered to go to the hassle of doing something I'm not sure about anyway.

Emmy - Can't believe you were able to run on a broken toe.

Mowzer - Enjoy your weekend  :)

Nick - That's a fair bit raised for charity and when you didn't even have to either!

Iain - Unbelievable that they nearly gave you the wrong number. Thank goodness your eagle eyed wife was around.

SK - That's an impressive goody bag there. How many gels do you normally take on a marathon? I hope you got given the brand you go for usually!

Big G/SK - Just rest until Sunday, avoid germs, children, wobbly pavements etc etc. Stay in and eat  :)

Shades - That's good news on a pain free run this morning. My eggs were actually from the neighbours chickens. Ours got out and there was an incident with the dogs(!) so we have none at the moment. We are in the middle of reinforcing the chicken run so it resembles something out of Alcatraz (one of my dad's jobs to do when he arrives) then we are off to a big market on the 27th to get some replacement chickens!

Usual 15k route this morning but I was dead tired so it was a bit grim. Lovely morning though.

I spotted on my run today that 2 bridges we were meant to run across on my ultra are closing in June and 1 will have no pedestrian access at all.I have emailed the organisers to tell them as they mustnt be aware, there is a possible diversion but this will bring the total to around 37 miles :-(

MF/Shades - I'm following your advise and have not done much apart from eat caramel waffles!

Big G - have you seen this? It seems very long, not sure I can be bothered...

MF - I'll probably take 4 or 5 gels with me but not sure I'll be able to stomach them all!

Shades, I haven't yet but I'm thinking about Florence, possibly. A lot depends on a) hamstring and b) finances.

    Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Cal-That's pretty interesting you mention florence.I'm considering doing a foreign one either this autumn or next spring.
Need it to be one with lots of things to see so the wife will be happy to come and incase I get injured then we have something else to do.

SK, I hadn't seen that. One marathon I did I decided to drive the course to see if there were any hills. That was a big mistake as it seemed a very long way even in the car!

I've picked up my race number and had a walk around the expo. I did buy a jacket as planned but I was good and didn't buy anything else.  I stayed around for an interview with a couple of elites and also a chat that Martin Yelling did, so had a good couple of hours.

Back at my friend's flat now, so relaxing before heading out for food later.

Possibly another couple of miles on your ultra then, you'll be fine.

mamafox - that will be good when you have your new chickens safely locked up away from the dogs.   Do you have foxes there?

SK - that's tiring just watching the route.

Cal - Florence is a very good choice :)

Big G - when I drive up the M5, Cullompton is about 26 miles from where I live and it always seems a long way to there even at 70mph.

Sounds like you enjoyed the Expo, congrats on the jacket.   Groin OK?

Ian5 - Florence marathon starts and finishes in the centre so ideal for your wife to support you...or go shopping.   Date is the last Sunday in November.

Shades, yes groin seems okay.  I haven't felt it at all whilst walking about, but I can feel it when I do the stretches.  I'm not running tomorrow though - there's no point really, at this stage.

I'm glad I came up today as it's much more civilised that rushing about on the Saturday.  I remember when I came last time I had to take my suitcase to the Expo as it would have been running a bit tight if I'd have gone to the hotel first.  I've been drinking enough water too, which I don't remember specifically doing before my last London, so hopefully that will help.  All the goody bag stuff has gone already, with the exception of the porridge....   :o

Unfortunately for me all the sub-3hr pace bands had ran out at the lucozade stand.  That's a shame as I hoping to knock an hour off my PB.... (joke!).

I am meeting up with a couple of non-running friends tonight, and I've explained i won't be boozing, but they're fine with that.  I may have one pint just to be sociable tonight, but I won't have any tomorrow when I'm meeting up for dinner with the charity.

My friend who I am staying with is a WAYer too, and her apartment is gorgeous.  It's just up the road from Tower Bridge, and is literally 30-secs off of the race route.  She's hosting all the people who are coming to support me on the course (I think it's about 30 now), as they can nip back and forth for refreshments.

Mamafox I do find massage helps though I don't have them that often due to the cost, I also find a sauna after exercise helps to ease muscle aches, I can now use the gym, sauna and steam room at work for free which is good, obviously not when I'm working!
Ive eaten well and rested this week, got everything ready for Sunday gels, jelly and coconut water. I'd love to get under 4.15 but don't know what the course is like re hills etc and not sure if this cold will play a part in the later stages.
Regarding nutrition is it better to get it on board earlier for benefit in the last hour as towards the end I know longer feel like eating the stuff. I'm thinking eat and drink the coconut water between 13 and 20 miles.
    Any advice would be great.

Big G - that's hopeful about your groin niggle.

It's so easy to get dehydrated traveling across London to the Expo, spending time looking at stuff, socialising and suddenly realising that you are thirsty and dehydrated, even if you have water in your bag it's remembering to drink the stuff.

Don't worry about forgetting your sub 3 pace band, you will see loads of them discarded on the route :D  I wonder do runners discard them when their race plan goes pear shaped?

The apartment near Tower Bridge sounds amazing, what a good location to see London at it's best.   I think you're going to have a great weekend.

Jugula - you've prepared as well as you can, let's just hope the cold passes quickly.

Yes, you're right, get your race fuel on early while you can tolerate it easily.  But keep one gel/handful of sweets (whatever you are using) as emergency stock just in case you have a tough time in the last few miles and need it yourself.  Once you know that you don't need any more fuel, you feel OK and just a couple of miles to go, you can always give your emergency stock away if you see another runner struggling.

Enjoy the caramel wafers, I think it's the caramel waffles that Big G and SK have been scoffing.   I like caramel wafers though.

My weekly catch up with my guru friend last night and there's good news and bad news..

The good news is that I can now drop my exercises to every other day for the next week as I have a marathon on Saturday, just do the stretching ones daily.   And today I can take a rest day.

The bad news is that I've had to cancel Belfast marathon, he says 2 marathons in 3 days is too much at the moment and I'm likely to have some aftereffects of the first marathon and sitting at the airport and on the plane the following day is not going to help plus the issue of getting round Belfast marathon too.   Shame as I really enjoy Belfast but Plym Trail is a better choice as a generous time limit so I can walk a great deal of it if I have to and it's close to home.   I've managed to transfer my flights, for a fee, to Dublin marathon weekend.

Big G-That apartment sounds perfect and really nice that your friend is letting everyone base themselves there.
Shades-Bad news about Belfast but at least you could transfer the flight so you don't lose it all and great news you think you can do plym after your injury.

Marathon list updated with Jugula's race number and goal time.   I see Southampton are using the same results system as Manchester but without live tracking.

I've already got my VLM tracking page pinned ready for use.

Ian5 - have a good training run today.

Good luck to all racing this weekend.

Shades - Yes we do have foxes here but to be honest my dogs are more of a problem with the chickens! That's a shame about Belfast but sounds like the sensible thing to do. You don't want a setback and have to start all over again with that exhausting stretching routine.

Just a quick post from me to wish Iain, Big G, SK and Jugula lots of luck for tomorrow. I hope you all have great races and I will be supporting you from a distance. I might miss the start as I have a long run planned first thing but will be galloping back to track you as soon as I can  :)

Bad luck on having to DNS that race Shades. Sounds like it's for the best though.

You may all recognise a certain nick name. It's because years ago I was a lot heavier than I am now, and it's kind of stuck.

A fairly successful stab at parkrun today. I was pretty sore yesterday so I was a bit nervous about running today and had a one mile warm-up jog, which wasn't too bad. My goal was to run at HM pace (8:54) but I ended up going a little faster than that - 8:42/8:48/8:40 so averaged 8:43 overall. The first mile felt OK but the discomfort started after the first mile - however, it wasn't too bad and then seemed to ease a little in the final mile. Having said that, I haven't run this fast for a while so it felt tough, even though my time was around 90 seconds slower than my parkrun PB. Of course, I did run a marathon three weeks ago!
I'd like to try a longer (and slower) run tomorrow to see how my errant tendon deals with distance.

And speaking of distance, good luck to Jugula, Big G, Iain and SK. I hope all your various niggles and ailments behave and that you have a wonderful experience. Jugula, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Southampton.

8 miles completed today so that's 38 for the week,1 of my biggest weeks ever so really happy with it.1st half mile or so felt a little like a recovery run as my legs felt a bit sore but all good after that, rest day tomorrow as that's 5 on the run which is a lot for me.
Hope SK,Big G,Iain and jugula have grear races and everything goes how you want it to.
Also nick for volunteering, have a good day.

So excited for all you marathoners this weekend. I have a fun morning planned tomorrow in front of the tv/computer tracking you all. Looks as though the weather is going to be reasonably good too.

BigG - I hope your groin behaves itself tomorrow (that sounds ever so slightly rude but you know what I mean  :D ) I loved the expo, that's one of the reasons I want to run VLM again. My gear from 2013 is looking a little tired now.

Iain - Loads of luck speedy one. Glad your wife spotted they had given you the wrong number, that would have been a disaster! Hope the massage has helped.

SK - Loads of luck - great stash from the expo! Have you got a target time or are you keeping that close to your chest?

Jugula - hope the cold goes away and you enjoy the inaugural Southampton marathon. The route looks good from the map, will be interesting to see how you find the 2 loops.

Cal - Hope the parkrun went well today. I'd heard that the London Landmarks sold out really quickly. Just as well I had forgotten about it or I would have been disappointed. £50 is very expensive - Royal Parks is a similar price. But I guess closing roads etc in the capital must cost a fair bit.

Shades - I'm sorry you had to cancel Belfast but it sounds like a very sensible decision to me and at least it isn't a wasted flight. They were advertising Dublin at the Brighton expo and I tentatively suggested to OH that it would be one for a future October (it seems to fall in half term). He didn't say no, so I'm taking that as a yes.

Emmy - you poor thing - glad you went to have your foot checked out although I know there is not much they can do for broken toes. It sounds as though you have been lucky though.

Mowzer - I hope you have a lovely weekend, whatever you decide to do. Your visit to the chiropodist does not sound like fun.

Mamafox - glad you had such a lovely run - you deserve one after all the problems with your foot.

Madness here. House up for sale this week, trying to sort out that, viewings and finding somewhere where we are moving to (rented) is rather monopolising my time and brain.

However, I appear to have entered Brighton again for next year. I blame my OH who told me that I had unfinished business. He's right of course so I hope its 3rd time lucky for me. I must be mad, given the problems they had this year.

I need to sort out my knee though, it's still really playing up. I've now done 2 runs post-Brighton. The last one was really painful and I nearly turned back after a couple of miles but the pain did ease a little around 3 miles in. I have physio next week so I will have a chat about a knee support as he mentioned that they can help and my sister said it helped her when she had a similar problem. I did go to pilates during the week and worked on my glutes but I had a very sore bum for a few days afterwards!

Shades - good news that you can do one of your planned marathons at least.

    Cal - nice parkrun

Ian - well done on the big week

Louey - you have a lot going on! Careful not to push your knee too hard, hope the physio can help.

6x400 for me first thing this morning off 60s recoveries. That was pretty tough. I had planned to jog recover but after the first one I just walked. And still took 20-30 secs extra recovery after the 4th rep as I was blowing really hard. Averaged 80 secs per rep tho so pleased with that and fairly consistent after being a bit too keen on the first one. Just over 5 miles altogether including warm up and cool down.

Louey - yeah. I've only paid £30 for Royal Parks but I do have to raise £350 for Battersea Dogs & Cats home. Fortunately I don't have to dress up as an animal or anything.
Ealing's closed roads, though, and that's much cheaper, but then it's not through Central London.
    Careful with that knee, eh?

Well done on the intervals, Nick, and the 8, Ian. Glad you've recovered from your spill.
Shades, two marathons in three days does sound a little, well, excessive... So sensible move. I did chat to a marshall at parkrun who was doing London tomorrow and a 100 mile ultra the following weekend. Eh, I wouldn't like to be his legs.

mamafox - here foxes will target chickens, they think of as easy pickings.  Years ago my aunt had 49 chickens and a fox scaled the wall and killed 47 of them, took one away to eat and the remaining one had to slaughtered as it was so traumatised.

Big G - I always assumed the Big referred to your height as you are tall.

Cal - well done at parkrun, you seem to be coping well with that niggle.

For an ultra runner a marathon the weekend before an ultra would be quite usual.

Ian5 - that's a really good week's training from you.  The initial tiredness in your run today is the reason that the back to back runs need to be at long run pace or even slower.

Louey - Dublin is usually at half term.  The race has now moved to a Sunday which they think is why the race filled fairly quickly last year as now possible to fly back to UK after the race without taking any time off work.   It's also a bank holiday weekend in Ireland.

Hope you sell and find a new house without too much stress, very time consuming task though.

Surely with all the negative comments Brighton will improve things next year and especially if it's going to be hot that they put into place adequate water for all.

Hope you get that knee sorted soon.   Is it a pat strap your physio mentioned, they work really well?

Nick - I hope you've carbo loaded for tomorrow as I think you're in for a pretty tiring day too.

Cal-That sounds like decent parkrun for you,the speed will come back soon enough.
Louey-Be careful with everything happening that you don't push yourself too much, easy to do.
Shades-I think I'm going to slow my long runs a bit,In this cycle I've been aiming for 9:26-9:30pm and been pretty much in that area for all of my long runs, but I've always taken the day after a long run as a rest day,so may slow an extra 10-15 secs, won't make much difference to how I do in the Ultra, but may make sure I get there in 1 piece.

Well, I'm up, fed and watered. I'm leaving the flat at 7am, which is quite early but I'll get there in plenty of time and hopefully be in time for my club's group picture.

I had a good day yesterday and feel relaxed, although I didn't sleep very well - tossing and turning since 3am, with the Beeb's London Marathon music playing in my head (I had this tune played at Claire's funeral).

Groin seems ok, so I'll just see what it feels like when I start running.

So, in summary I'm nervous but excited!

Best of luck to everyone running today.

Good luck Big G, although you must be on your way to the start now.    The London marathon music must be very poignant for you.

I've just refreshed the VLM tracker and that seems to be working OK

Ian5 - yes, slow down your long run pace.   Everyone instinctively aims to run at the faster end of long run pace but they will develop better and stronger aerobic capacity by aiming at the slower end of their pace range.   There's nothing to be gained by doing the training miles faster.

Nice morning here, have been out for a short run, slight discomfort in last mile.  My injury doesn't respond well to rest days :/  I guess I'll just have to keep on running :)
