skybluemonkey - I think similar arguments were used when recommending the amount of exercise people should do. The "right" figure would scare off too many people, so they just recommend nonsense like "vigorous housework for 20 mins a day".

Trans fats are predominatly found in the following sorts of foods

Fast Food French Fries - 8g / medium serving
Margarine - 0.5g-3g / tbsp
Shortening - 4g / tbsp
crisps - 3g / small bag
Doughnuts - 5g / each

(Guide only Amounts vary per brand etc)

Food manufacturers don't even have to list trans fatty acids on labels and few choose to do so. (although i think they do in the US)

So look out for (and avoid) hydrogenated vegetable fats, which they're usually found in. Hydrogenated vegetable oil is usually declared on the ingredient list - the lower down the list of ingredients that hydrogenated vegetable oil is mentioned on the label, the small its quantity in the food.

Plus since Trans Fats are not listed and they are not the same as saturates, monunsaturates or polyunsaturates then nyou can normaly work it out by adding up the declared saturates, monunsaturates or polyunsaturates the subtracting it from the total fats

Wildwill - need to be more specific about "margarine" above though - as you say amounts vary a lot per brand - the trans content of flora is negligible. (Much less than butter).

as i say it is brand variable, my figures are based on the average

And you now can get (almost) trans fat free margarine such as the new flora pro-active range

Butter for reference is about (per serving)
10.8g - FAT
of which
7.2g - SAT
0.3g - TRANS

basically don't eat junk food like crips, chips, chocolate, biscuits, pies, cans of sugary "soda" or microwave meals and you'll be OK.

get plenty of exercise and don't eat any crap, and you can eat as much healthy stuff as you like.

i stuff myself 5 times a day and lose fat gradually, or 6 times a day and stay static. just by exercise and not eating junk.

I just re-read (parts of) this thread and I think the point is that even the p!ss takers (and I'm including me in there) can post some sensible stuff. Yep, this thread got a bit hijacked but it also stayed on course too.

At least one more of the accused (Candy Ollier) posted some serious & sensible thoughts on this one.
