I don't think anyone wants to ban chat/banter/drivel - it would just be nice not to have to wade through it sometimes.
I use the 'latest posts' thing so I get everything irrespective of which sub-forum it's posted in - an option to get the same but to ignore a dedicated chat forum would be extremely handy.
If so I would have thought the general toot was of more interest to you than the running information and is probably the only reason you come back here?
Why can't anyone post a suggestion to RW about change to this forum without them being made a villain?! Surely, RW will take or leave their suggestion without this 'community' telling the poster to like it or lump it or shove off!
Exactly, hilly. Without wishing to sound like I'm a grumpy arsehole (which I am), it's just the usual mafia ganging up for a laugh at someone's expense and it gets rather seriously on my wick.
Somewhere gathering cobwebs in this Forum section is a thread I started a while back on this exact same issue.
It was one night when I came in looking for a bit of misc running chat and banter, only to find a list as long as your arm of various stuff nothing of which bore any relation to running.
So in a fit of pique and suitably inebriated I posed the question why people found the need to spout drivel (completely non-running related), sometimes on a prolific basis...on a thread called, 'General Running'
The feedabck was mixed, some agreed, but an equal number didn't.
I let Sean at RW have some feedback and he did mention that they were thinking of re-naming the sections or something like that, but as yet it's as you were
hilly, if the sugggestion was made to RW then why post it on the forums? There are threads, periodically about this and it is well established that the forums are the way the majority of forumites want them.
I think that RW should introduce some changes.
New members should not be allowed to start new threads until they have been here for 3 months and all members should be restricted to a limited number of new threads per week/month. There is too much dross and the feeding frenzy where everyone posts threads with a play on another thread's title really clogs up the forum at times.
...of course we're not. Had'ya, had'ya! Of course we look at all suggestions and take note of all the good and bad feedback. Hopefully you do see some of the stuff you've suggested being added to the forums as the site develops.
Martin are you saying that because some threads go off topic that you don't glean as much information from it as you'd like? I'd say there's enough info on here to sate your needs and desires.
There is still a wealth of info on here and a hell of a lot of banter. Most of the info will not go out of date, with the exception of gear, so... Basically, I can't really see the massive problem. It's not like responses on the whole start of as "inane" so I'm sure you'll have some of what you want from your original question.
Because the poster most probably wanted to see what reaction it got and there is nothing wrong in that, except some return posts are offensive by telling him to disappear-so to speak!
I'm not saying non running talk is wrong on General, I'm saying the attitude some take towards those who disagree with the setup of General is wrong!
maybe if people did POSE running, their posts would be less inane. i used to be inane until i started POSE running, now i'm brilliant. anybody who doesn't like POSE running must be reeducated or shot. once i had a blister - but that was, of course, before i started POSE running.
Just had a brief look at the 40 threads on each forum
General - 16 of 40 are running related Beginners 40 of 40 Training 39 of 40 Injury 40 of 40 Gear 40 of 40 Events 40 of 40 URWFRC 11 of 40 FLM 40 of 40 Tri 40 of 40 are running/tri related
So by my rough reckoning - 85% of threads are relevant. How much more do you want ?
Surely yo're asking to put the cart before the horse. Why not ask for a forum for strictly running related matters? Or why not split serious running issues into different forums? You could have a forum for event, one for injuries, one for gear, one for training, and maybe one for beginners.
Master Spedding how long would it take to instigate my suggestions about limiting the number of threads we can start and resticting new members to not being able to start threads till they'd been here a while?

Ooo wait what about the bookmark facility?

Hilly - thanks
Swerve - yes tongue in cheek but what joy an anti-hijack button would be.
End of thread.

Back to the suggestions then.
If I really wanted to make a suggestion then I'd want to either to gauge public opinion or email it directly.

martin/harry/swerve/hilly some useful suggestions here. no need to repeat them every time
what's next? Jon and 10p complaining about how many people hijack threads?
I hop Dodge doesn't start one thread about how many non-running related threads are under the URWFRC
(taking your life in your hands though)
Oh you were joking weren't you, Rob??

And you did say you wanted banter too.
