Didn't see the later parts of the thread but it did make me more than a bit uncomfortable when I read it this morning. It wasn't so much the subject matter that got me - there's clearly going to be lots of long and heated debate about how things became as bad as they are and why 'the authorities' seemed to be so badly prepared - more a time and place kind of thing.
Lets just hope that the situation can be brought under control quickly without too much more unnecessary suffering and loss of life.
Just been reading the BBC saying there is looting and car-jacking going on, which you can kind of understand, people in desperate circumstances an all. But then it mentioned reports of rapes!!! A different kind of desperation surely!
I suspect the thread was just removed as it could be an embarrassment to RunnersWorld - e.g. you can easily see a news story saying "and on this British internet website, visitors were debating the weight of the survivors and whether anyone that large could actually starve" - guess it's also a little insensitive for the RW US staff?
I can understand the looting, the bullying and even the vendettas with your neighbours but shooting patients and doctors being evacuated from a hospital..... People are not desperate, they are maniacs.
At a rough calculation of fuel prices at the pump, I reckon this hurricane will possibly have netted the UK government around £9million pounds in extra revenue this week and next. A very very rough calculation that is.
I thought the fat yanks stuff was a bit insensitive, given that many people are still dying.
I do think this ought to give America pause to think about themselves at some point though. In a national emergency when people really need to pull together a crown loots the gun department at WalMart (roll on the day you can buy a shotgun at Asda) and then people open fire on hospitals and the emergency services.
I agree that the thread this morning was controversial in nature, but some of the stuff on there was rational/reasonable/arguable, so to can a serious thread, on a forum that very rarely has serious stuff on it, just because of a few snipes, or a couple of distatseful comments present is ridiculous. There was some quality stuff on there! We're all mature enough to see 'web-related-disagreements' in perspective - not that bad really, more of a mental exercise than anything else. Debating practise if you will. Of course, Rodale Publishing sells a lot mags in the U.S, so anything even remotely anti-American has to be canned, just like they can't slag off, or allow the slagging off of anybody who advertises with them, even when they're presently being reported for medical malpractise! (Different thread of mine which was canned).
If it helps relieve any guilt anyone is experiencing for being on a quasi-serious thread, I think everyone who's posted on it so far is a t0sser There you go, that's the first snipe in, and a suitable level of silliness established. Let it all degenerate from here onwards...
I've been out all day and came home looking forward to the heated debate there was bound to have been on that thread.
Very disappointed.
Thanks for the namecheck McGoohan.
Reminds me of the time I was in a heated debate with a mate of mine at University. At one point he shouted `yes but not everyone sees things as reasonably as you do' and stopped himself dead astounded he'd said it.
Create in individualistc scoiety based on greed, the accumulation of material possessions and lack of respect for fellow humans and that is what you get.
When did I become the spokesman for rapists? As far as I'm aware, though, rape goes on in SA townships which are probably not a society based on greed, material accumulation of possessions...etc..etc...

Another typically retarded thread from Runnersblog.
Post, I meant post...
Oh look... here comes Plodding Tosser...
Very disappointed.

Rubbish! Generalisation.
Fill a city with black people and that is what you get.
(I don't believe that, by the way, but I wanted to show how generalising about large groups, or even countries, can give us bad arguments).
Fill a city with runners
scary
LOL!
I don't know.
