Ahh...Franko-File....."anything else that makes fell-running different to road running"
...where to start?
The freedom of being out in the hills
The exhilaration at moving across difficult ground so quickly
The pure concentration needed so that nothing else matters for that moment in time
The views? You ARE allowed to stop and look occasionally!
The lack of injuries 'cause you're running on a much softer surface
The camaradarie that's just not present at road races in the same way
The "down to earth" attitude of ALL runners, including the elite
I could go on all day.....but would suggest you look for local walking routes in the hills of the north-east and try some of those. As you get more adventurous, you'll start finding new and interesting routes on the maps. Also, have a look for any fell-running clubs in your area...or does a local running club do a fair bit of training on the fells?
Main thing is, get out there and enjoy it....and re-discover the joys of running :-)
The bit about 'lack of injuries' doesn't always hold true, I've fallen over more time in fell races than anywhere else! The landing is often worse because of the rocks, but I still enjoy the fells!
Joined a club a couple of weeks ago and have been training on the fells of the north west, winter hill etc. Had my first club race last night really enjoyed it and can't wait to start entering races 'properly'!
Do you guys train after a race or rest? I was undecided what to do today but fate dealt it's hand and I was unable to get out for a run.
Although I'm well after the run i.e no stiffness etc, I'm aware my ankles are a bit 'achey' is this normal? Perhaps a good idea to rest today?
I do run in fell shoes but the ground as been so dry the terrain on the moors is so hard as oppose to the squelchy bogs they should be!!
train after a race - usually, unless it was stupidly long - but often will cross train on bike, ski machine, for a few couple of days if very stiff. Otherwise, easy running.
If you've got acute pain i n ankles, best to not run - get on the bike or maybe a swim. Will help to loosen the legs.
Fell shoes are unforgiving at this time of year. Last few runs on the hills I've done - apart from short, fast ones - have been in Montrail trail shoes. They've a lot more cushioning and structure so kinder on the legs.
Emmilou - I agree with Garrett, I had ankle pain a bit ago but ignored it and the ache turned into achilles trouble. It may have been consequential but you rest if you feel you need to.
If you've done hard stuff/terrain you could alternate it with a nice, flat run.
What's stopping you from entering a 'proper' race soon, anyway? There's always someone to talk to and the enjoyment in racing over hills is massive!
Anyone planning any more BGR attempts this year? Would like to attempt it before the nights get too long. I was too busy with another run in June to attempt it at the optimum time. Maybe I should just do some reccies and wait till May / June next year?
Thanks guys - did rest up last night and feeling fine this morning got a flat 5 and a half after an hours weights session tonight. Should sort me out!! Doing a long fell run on sunday morning with the club.
FL - just joined the running club so getting fit enough for more demanding races! Have the yorkshiremans half in sept although more af a trail I think so will start filling the forms in soon and see you there!
Fell Liker - I run with Lostock, so train up winter hill and 2 lads etc. Not sure what my next race is going to be can't do much this month as it's the kids summer hols so after the yourkshiremans in sept I'll start looking proper then - any recommendations?
Not doin anything now until septembers yorkshiremans then not sure after that need to look at the calender - any good suggestions for end of sept beginning of october?
