today's fact - a bit more info about paralaysis and what it actually is -
Paralysis refers to the inability to control movement or to detect sensations such as touch and temperature. It can happen to anyone at anytime, a car accident, a slip or fall, etc... The effects are permanent, but Spinal Research are working to find a cure.
my browser can't find your page matie, i've got to go inthru the search for a freind so i need to know your name as it doen't recognise carovet either...
even though it's after midnight i'm gonna count it as yesterday...
Today's fact is again about spinal injury and how it can occur. It is not only the obvious ways - such as a car accident, a fall, a sport injury etc. But permanent spinal damage can also occur by so-called ‘non-traumatic’ injuries. These include - Infection of the spinal nerve cells (bacterial and viral), cysts or tumours pressing on the spinal cord, interruption of the blood supply to the spinal cord (causing cord damage) as well as some medical conditions present from birth (such as spina bifida)
My last day today, therefore my last fact. I thought i'd go back to basics and give a fact about what the spinal cord is and what it does -
The spinal cord enables your brain to communicate with your body. Up and down the spinal cord, every second of your life, messages are sent to keep you on the move. When a spinal cord injury occurs, communication may be severed, resulting in a loss of function
THanks, Drummond. I've learned some new facts each day since we've been doing this.
Next week is VICTA with Nicky. Any suggestions for how we can attract more attention? At this rate, we're going to run out of people/charities at the end of next week.
So far, we have had: RNIB - Dangly - 9-16 Dec http://www.justgiving.com/paulbrainandmarkscales Stroke Assoc - Rowan = 17-23 Dec http://www.justgiving.com/stroke100 Breast Cancer Care - Carovet 24-30 Dec www.justgiving.com/carovet Spinal Research by Drummond - 31 Dec - 7 Jan 2007. - www.justgiving.com/drummond2007 VICTA by Nicky Gunn – 8-15 Jan - www.bmycharity.com/nickygunn
23 miles last wk - have paid you Drummond, so it's Santa Nicky this wk then? I don't really know how to promote it any more. I mentioned it on the other forum I visit and that may be where Nicky saw it but other than that I can't think of any other ways. We can just start at RNIB again and keep it to 5 charities I suppose.
i would love to do this!! Its fab! im running for The Miscarriage Association! Can someone email me with exact details of how this works please? Have read all threads but am still slightly confused lol! Email is monob1@hotmail.com
Hi MOnfo, Welcome on board! The theory is, that between us, in the build up for the Marathon or any other race, we will probably do around a million miles of running - may be more, so to turn that into useful cash for charities, we are paying 10p a mile that we run in training each week and giving it to the week's designated charity.
So far we have had: RNIB - Dangly - 9-16 Dec http://www.justgiving.com/paulbrainandmarkscales Stroke Assoc - Rowan = 17-23 Dec http://www.justgiving.com/stroke100 Breast Cancer Care - Carovet 24-30 Dec www.justgiving.com/carovet Spinal Research by Drummond - 31 Dec - 7 Jan 2007. - www.justgiving.com/drummond2007 VICTA by Nicky Gunn – 8-15 Jan - www.bmycharity.com/nickygunn
Each week, the 'owner' of each charity puts a daily fact about the charity on the thread for us all to see, then at the end of the week, we put in our 10p per mile run donation to the relevant website.
Anyone can, of course, donate more or less than their 10p a mile to any of the charities at any time.
So... week of 15-21 January is the Miscarriage Association?
Santa Nicky, Could you maybe say that VICTA gave money to a family X in wherever which was used to purchase something that helped their child by whatever? or something along those lines? Just lets us know where the money goes and what a difference it really makes to people.
This is my first piece of info then for VICTA, this is what they do they provide support for visually impaired children and their families. The aim of their work is directed towards parents obtaining early diagnosis, correct medical treatment and the best social and educational support so that our children can reach their full potential.
go on then count me in lol! 15-22 january is the miscarriage association! unless someone else has snapped it up?
So heres my fact! The miscarriage association is a charity which helps families through miscarriage which is often an unrecognised form of baby loss. It is worth mentioning that 1 in 5 pregnancies will end in miscarriage. Monica xx
hi everyone, sorry i haven't been about been on lates at work.
here's my fact for the day (s) VICTA wasstarted in 1987 by a group of parents of blind and partially blind children, they came together to discuss individual needs and discovered they could help each other, so successful the group was extended to a national level. They also assist in providing guidance on entitlement to social security and welfare benifits, organise trips and social events, provide grants for equipment and toys.
