Oh YOU'RE Rug 19!!!  I was sure I'd never heard the name before, but I was quite wrong.  You should have mentioned you were the one with the Dr Evil avatar..... image

Good to meet you on Sunday - hope your mrs enjoyed herself - you weren't too sure when we saw her on the run, but looking at my run face on the photos, it would appear I was either crying all the way around or someone had cut off my oxygen.  It felt like both.

So, Rug.  About this Ironman.......  I'll go easy - you don't have to do it till next year, but if you leave it longer than that, you have to do the Double Iron instead.  Sound fair?

    My day's summary:

    Bad Bits
    1. Not having done any bike training.
    2. Crashing into TWO idiots who couldn't grasp the complex idea of "swim in a clockwise direction" (that second one reeeeeeeeallly freakin' hurt!!)image
    3. Spending nearly 2 minutes in T1 (I don't take that long to dress for the office each morning!!)
    4. Being waaaaay worse on the bike than my ego led me to believe. image
    5. Losing patience with a car coming into T2, stomping on my pedals and causing both legs to cramp.  Schoolboy error... image
    6. Having to stop twice on the run to stretch out aforementioned cramp.
    7. Chap dying on the course.  Puts it in perspective really. image

     Good Bits
    1. Still managed to beat my PB.
    2. A cracking run despite stopping for about a minute.
    3. Wotsit's swim time (that might be a bad thing though, given that she did that off maybe ONE training session - what if she gets faster than me........ the indignity....)
    4. Mouse and SVT proving that training can make such a difference (again, as a lazy git, I may re-class that as a bad thing....)
    5. Slacker and Pig's fantastic bike results.
    6. Slacker coming up with valid excuses as to how he missed the huge yellow turning point on the run course! image
    7. "HELMET!!!!"
    8. "HELMET.......BIKE.....................CLOTHES!!!" (as yelled by Bassy at GOM after the swim leg)
    9. Trickster's sunburnt face and expression of complete defeat by the time we got to him at the end (top work, mate - hope you got a beer at the end of the day!)
    10. Barley's pirate messages on the roads
    11. Meeting lots of new people - Seren, Little Sis, Rug........ (balls, I've forgotten the other names already)
    12. A cracking day out with a bunch of mates.  (except that tw@t Crashie who beat my bike time by 6-seconds..... oh, and Ant who beat my swim by 2-seconds...... but everyone else I liked! image)

More Good than Bad.  Just as it should be.  I'm going back into hiding now.

You running any night this week, Crashie - if so, I'll join you.  We can munch your (and Ant's) prize on the way around.  (Not tonight though - Stuck in tonight and running through the cramp on Sunday seems to have given me something of a niggle....... I think my head is loose)
  • Options
Yes, IMHO it sounds like your head is about to fall off. I'm looking at Thursday or Friday...in fact, I'm considering the Worcestershire Way if you could skive off work image
  • Options
    What, all of it?  When?
  • Options
The theory is 'all of it' but obviously, my head may fall off again and I might only be able to do some of it...but hopefully as a slow run/walk later this week...

i have just looked at slackers bike time

    <thud>

Well done to you all image Been lurking round the thread to get inspiration for the Cheshire Tri on 31/5! Have got the wibbles now!!!!

DIM Wickett-ha ha Dr Evil? It's DeNiro as Travis Bickle but it does indeed look quite Dr Evil-ish! image

Good to meet you too and ...errr i would like to do an oly before i do an iron-y if only to get my swim confidence...but maybe i can do an oly early next season and an iron thingy somewhere nice & warm later on in the season thus avoiding a double-iron...

Mrs Rug really enjoyed the day which i great as i can plan the next one asap (Bristol?) as i can't wait until Newbury to do another!

     Good Bits

    • That post-swim T1 feeling
    • The bike battle with no.556 (won-just)
    • General race organisation (thanks guys)
    • PSOF support
    • The quick T2 due to run shoes rather than bike shoes
    • Catching up with SV...eventually
    'Bad' Bits
    • The fatality
    • Maybe not enough marshalls around mount/dismount area
    • The run battle with no.556 (lost badly!)
    • Absence of tri-bars, clipless pedals and swim training!
In summary-i think this tri-thing is slightly more-ish.
  • Options

    very more-ish......image

last year I did my first sprint in May and by the end of the season I managed  to add to that

2 open water aquathons - bryn bach

    1 middle distance Bala

1 open water sprint tri  - tuska

    1 Oly - bryn bach

and the extreme middle distance in dartmoor

Was just reading about Bala in 220...i wonder...

Going to support a mate at Bleinheim soon so i'll get some tips re. open water swim and T1 wetsuit removal strategies...

Wickett-new avatar arriving soon..jaffa cakes to anyone who guesses correctly the name of the bloke (not Rug 19 or my real name!)

  • Options

Rug I would really recommend Bala......great pirate support all along the course........one of the best days of my life............I'd never swum the distance in the pool before ( I did half crawl and half breaststroke on the day) and only worn the wetsuit once before and only bought my road bike the week before....................but the pirate support gets you around no problem..........

  • Options

Thanks Seren nos-i did notice a massive difference between triathlon and run-only races-mainly that of a better more supportive atmosphere (probably in part due to wave starts so it's possible to compete and support which is great)..The PSOF crew were great (& it's always good to put faces to avatars).

Run-only races are great fun but Triathlon is more...interesting fun. Also there is the bike-porn factor.

    Off to complete my bala-research...

btw-read Triathlon Plus for the 1st time in wh smiths today and it was better than i thought!

  • Options

with bala the bike and run course are out and back so you get to see everyone and there is pirate support along the route.

    amazing.

  • Options

Is it Lance Armstrong? Peter Andre? Spike Milligan?

Bala is a real laugh and a good weekend away. Top tip: if you can stay on the Sunday night, the trip home is more comfortable and you can party afterwards image

I had a letter this morning stating that my son's annual review in school was on the monday morning at 9:30am................I had to phone them and get it rearranged as I had a very important meeting in North wales that day......................so all the psychologists and teachers etc have had to rearrange their diaries so that I can party at Balaimage
  • Options
Thanks for the tips...for some reason the powers that be are taking ages to approve my new avatar-maybe they want the jaffa cakes all to themselves...
  • Options

    Seren nos-excellent prioritisation there! image

Crash-you're allowed only 3 more guesses...

I don't for one minute suggest anyone does this because it would be wrong - but when you get your photos up and press Ctrl P they just happen to print off.  I found out by accident of course and wasn't at all in any way  trying to prevent paying for a photo certificate. image

  • Options
without the company logo stuff on the front???
  • Options

    Wish my printer worked now.

Soupy-does it work hypothetically with no. 536?

  • Options

Hypothetically it works Rug.  There' still a logo on (I predict) so for photos not brill but okay for a certificate in my book.  I think they charge too much for those anyway.

OK, all this talk of Bala...

...I'm lazy, so could some one sum up what it is all about so that I don't have to do any research it would be great.  This is just in case a friend of a friend decides to take part soon.  Details such as date, distances and an idea of where in the world Bala is would all be helpful to my...er... friend.

Just completed the form to take part in the Channel Relay.  Now, do I send it off?
