Welcome home LMH and a fantastic well done! LOL at the Italian men! Horrified at the lack of water though.

Wecome back too Clag, holiday sounds great but exhausting. I've never done proper MTBing, have ridden a MTB off road but always got off when it got a bit scary! Did you learn technique for rocks, steep descents etc from someone else of just find out as you went along?

Hope the assessment sorts something out for your back Hy4

Dad-sitting continues...I've a long list of people - social workers, GP etc - to talk to today. My Dad is managing suprisingly well physically and is eating and sleeping but obviously finds it very bewildering without my Mum, and asks me every day when she's coming home, quite heart-rending.

Managed about 10 miles jogging in loops around the country park near my parent's house yesterday - it's built on spoil heaps which means there are more hills than I'm used to which must be good! So I hope I will still be OK for a 'get you round' approach to Amsterdam image

Welcome back LMH, it's good to have you back safely and well done again, you were terrific.  It's lovely the Italians treated you so warmly and very well deserved.  Glad that you saw Prague before you left and I hear it is very romantic and pretty in the winter with the horses and little bells jingling on their harnesses.  Hope you have a good rest and bet Grace is glad to see you both.  Looking forward to your report when you feel much better.  image

Clag - well done on the 14 miler after such a busy holiday.  image

HY4 - hope you get to the root of your back problem.  image

Sluggie - hope all goes well today with list of people to see today and well done for getting 10 miler done and dusted.  image

ITB is very frustrating and wonder how long it can go on for.  Apart from losing another 1 st 5 lbs, wonder if it is to do with car accident at 20 when left side of pelvis took full impact and/or the same side got a clobbering in a kickboxing tournament a few years back - right side of pelvis in musculature has always been less giving than left.  Next step is video running analysis and am back to powerwalking of own choice.  If this carries on much longer, will have to ask Race Director if they mind me powerwalking their events.  Still mustn't grumble, can powerwalk, swim and bike quite well.  image

Fantastic performance LMH and welcome home.  Cant wait to read the full report. image

Had a good weekend of running 20m off road on Saturday and about 5m on the roads Sunday morning and no niggles so I am mighty pleased with that image. Next Marathon is on road and only 4 weeks awayimage

Floossie my Daughter used to be a Junior GB Race Walker I know its different from power walking but she used to enter local running races and walk them and no one ever complained (well except those "runners" that she used to beat)  And most race directors, I am sure, wont mind how you cover the distance as long as you are within their cut offs.

LMH - well done, I think it is appalling how any race can run out of water, IMUK had similar issues BUT the European championships should be better run than anyother race. Its not as if its "just a marathon", by the time the water has run out there will be people already in trouble at that stage in the race

JP - how dangerous for the competitors - running out of water in any event be it 10K up to ultra distances.  Do they prosecute or fine Race Organisers who put the competitors at that sort of risk?  image

MF7 - does your daughter still do racewalking?  Sounds like you have a really sporty family.  Glad you had a lovely weekend and put some great miles in the bank.  Where's your next marathon?  Thank you so much for the encouragement and can certainly live with powerwalking until a thorough assessment is done.  image

Sluggie - B tries to teach me techniques as he's more experienced than I am. I ride the red routes, won't do anything with a black grading, and in all honesty would probably benefit from some further, more expert tuition!

Flossie - they normally come up with an excuse, they usually rely on the small print of the race entry that says DO NOT rely on them for fluids etc, despite the fact that in Ironman races you cannot accept outside assistance and technically taking a cup of water off the six year old kid at the end of their garden is outside assistance and would get you disqualified!!.

Flossie  my Daughter had a realy bad experience with Team GB management at the European champs in Spain and pretty much lost her enthusiasm for it after that which is a shame but these things happen.  she runs, surfs and scubadives for fun now and has been talking about having a go at a tri soon.  My next marathon is the Kent Coastal which is my local one and im on the organising committee and acting as a sub 5 (get me round) pacemaker.

JP as a race organisor it is my opinion that we should never ever run out of water on the route.  We always over estimate and then add a bit more to be safe. In the whole scheme of things the cost of water is minimal so it should not be skimped on.

MF7, well if she needs any pointers on "tri" you know who to call............. image  (I knew I would get one of your clan over to the darkside)!!

For most races there is NO cost for water as one of the major water companies is usually a sponsor!!.

IMUK allegedly paid United Utilities a lot of money to use their reservoir, you would think that they would then ensure that there was some arrangement in place for water

JP - lost count how many titbits I ate during FLM, ie, jellybabies, slices of orange, bikkies.  Felt like that hoover out of the Tellytubbies and would have have definitely been disqualified for my intake (food and/or water), but am now a changed eating character.  So, maybe we should all train like the army guys with a (70lb?) backpack on - that way, we can't get disqualified for eating our own picnics.  Will it come to this?  image

MF7 - your daughter has found the fun side of sport fully (I love the water too) and sounds like she'd be a great contender for tri.  Am looking forward to the New Forest Half, which I guess is our local marathon, but then we also have North Dorset Village Marathon earlier in the year and the sweaty trail one at Salisbury.  image

    Flossie,

I've had about 4 hrs relatively pain free at work this afternoon.  Tomorrow is a toil day so after my run I'll be doing some yoga and hopefully that should put me right.  I've made a few 'tweaks' to my desk layout so Wednesday's going to be interesting.

Anyone heard how she got on on IOM?

No time to run tonight, got home to a host of things to attend to then with a birthday cake to bake ran out of gas- cook on bottled gas up here- and too big (or small) a wimp to turn the nut on the old cylinder to dis- connect it. (Male part of household still away).  Anyhow sorted out with some help eventually and cooking done. Phew!

LMH - Looking forward to hearing more about Prague.

Apologies, no time to read back.

I've just been checking out the full results from Prague and I just wanted to say, Little Miss - you are awesome.  5th for your age group in the European Championship, and 44th overall.  Words cannot express how impressed I am.  You certainly did the kit proud.  Absolutely brilliant, and in such torrid conditions too.

Very very very well done!!!  imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Apologies if this post is a bit gushing but I've been on the Oranjeboom which was slipping down a treat (however I have been for a run today, and a bike ride I'll have you know and I've got another bike ride planned tomorrow)

Her achilles was a little niggly but ok and she didn't feel too tired.

LMH - You are AWSOME, well done. You are a Shadie Star and modest with it image

Well, I got my August Marathon out the way. I wasn't looking forward to it as it was another find your own way trail route. It was well way marked along the way so I only eeded to use my map near the end. So I didn't get lost.image

Very hot though and I took ages, walked a lot and ran/walked with Hippo for a while which was fun.

Next one is New Forest in September image

    Hi Elspeth!

It was running around Salisbury countryside, stunning scenery. The end bit was through Salisbury town centre past the entrance of the beautiful Cathedral, dodging tourists! Hippo was taking pictures along the way!

Haven't been on here much as had visitors all last week. They are gone now. This week is sorting out the allotment before we go to Spain next Tuesday image image

VR - I'm getting tempted to go for all off road maras next year as I rather fancied the 54321 but it didn't really fit with road training

    Hi MaySze Chang.

    -----------------------

2 miles with an interval section in the middle followed by about 30 min of yoga.  Not uploaded the garmin yet so don't know fully how I got on because I've changed everything to ks in prep for Hyde Park.

    VR,

Well done.  I wouldn't fancy having to navigate round a course.

  • Options

VR - I saw that one and thought it sounded good too, but was too late and it is a bit far away. Can I ask what time you did. Know what you mean about dodging tourists, had to do that in last 10k including fully laden bikes two abreast in narrow lanes.

    HIya MaySze Chang.

Time was irrelevant in this case Elspeth.  I didn't even wear my watch.
I did eat a whole box of jaffa's all the way round though image

I would highly recommend it though quite a bit of it is on roads.

When and where is your next race Sparkly?

    Hello MaySze.

What the very kind Mr B neglected to mention is that only five finished in my age group and there were only 54 women in total.

In-laws have gone. I've walked Grace and had a little swim and am feeling much better. Working on the report - which may be nearly as long as the race!

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

LMH - Good to hear you feel better, look forward to the report.

    Make a coffee - or cook dinner - it's a long one!

Where to start? Well, as Mark pointed out to me on the day before the race, if you’d have told me two years ago that I’d be racing for Team GB at triathlon I’d have laughed so just getting a place on the team and getting to the start line was an achievement. I tried to hold on to the fact as my nerves mounted. My nerves were not holped by watching the baggage handler walk over my new carbon framed bike in its soft bike bag on the loading ramp of the aircraft! Thankfully when the mechanics reassembled her at the hotel they pronounced her fit. It was always going to be hard for me to race in Prague due to my inability to eat wheat and refusal to eat meat. I’d done my best, corresponding with the hotel in advance about suitable gluten free food before the race and taking wheat free muesli and gluten free pasta with me but with the benefit of glorious hindsight I hadn’t done enough. The hotel did cook me a very nice gluten free pasta dinner the night before the race but despite my asking for a large portion it was about what I’d eat normally, never mind the night before a long race, and no pudding either.Travelling with Nirvana and staying in the team hotel was the expensive but definitely least stressful option and it was really nice to meet and chat with some of the other Team GB members, most of whom were of course much more experienced than me – this being my fifth triathlon ever! It was obvious from the off that the race organisation was poor, not our team managers fault – the information just wasn’t there for him to give us. I had planned on riding the bike course as part of the advertised police escorted recce of the bike course to be held at 1300hrs on Thursday but we were told at the last minute that this had been cancelled. On Friday we were taken to register at the horse racing course where the race finished, the expo proved absolutely non-existent other than the nutrition providers stand and there was one poor person checking in every athlete before they could then go and collect their race pack – which consisted of three numbers for your bike helmet and one for your bike, a swim cap with your number written on it, a pair of socks and a wrist sweatband plus loads of advertising material. Needless to say they didn’t have the socks in small girls sizes. Friday night I had my pasta meal and a glass of red and slept surprisingly well.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
