I don't like the way these graphs always show total ascent; here it shows 1020m, but at no point do you actually go up 1020m from sea level (say).....makes it sound worse. Essentially the worst hill is about 235m over about 15000m (hard to tell precisely from graph), plus a few more ups and downs. Then you just have to do it all again. If we cycled the course 8 times, we'd have ascended the same height as Everest, but it isn't that bad (hopefully).
235 m over about 15-16K shouldn't be toooooooooo hellish (she says). I still need lots of hill practice though!
To do that you need to get out there on yer bike Lee, and from what I've been reading lately you aren't doing alot of anything.
Now get out there and start some form of training
Yeah okay you're right. In my very flimsy defense I was out on the bike at the weekend, i'm doing a tri this weekend, and have other rides planned in, as well as spin class etc. Defo need to up my game all-round though Thanks for the shove!
A couple of race reports from the dark side of the moon;
Hi
My husband and i did Regensburg this year so i thought i would tell you what i thought of it. We have done over 10 IM between us and most of the European ones, so have something to compare it to.
Regensburg was a lovely city, like a mini Prague, the people were friendly and helpful. Although the expo is spread out in the city centre (easily walkable) it was nice just to wander the streets and visit it all.
The lake was nice and clean and you can turn up anytime and swim for free (unlike Austria). The swim start looks worse on video then it actually was, i always get anxious before the swim start but this is by far the best. It seems quite a narrow start but i soon found clear water. Loads of spectators around the lake.
The bike route was nice, road surface was really good. The hills weren't too bad and all the climbing was altogether at the beginning of each loop. the rest of the loop was flat (could be hard if it was windy). Feed stations were well stocked. Plently of strict marshalls, no chance of large groups of people drafting like i saw in Switzerland. TT bike course. Lots of spectators out on the bike course. Scenery was nice but not quite as nice as Austria.
The run was 4 loops and i enjoyed it alot more than Austria, you ran through the middle of the city and there were LOADS of people out cheering you on. It was flat just a couple of very small slopes. It was quite hot around the park but again lots of feed stations well stocked.
Overall this was brilliantly organised race and all the volunteers were so helpful. If i was to say anything negative it would be the food at the end - bread with cheese or salami, bananas and gherkins!!! I also missed not having a finishers party, they had an awards ceremony in the afternoon but nothing in the evening.
we stayed in the AVIA hotel, it was outside the city centre but only a 15 min walk in. The hotel was right on part of the bike route that comes in to the city. It was a very friendly hotel, they put on early breakfast on the morning of the race and the rooms were big enough for us and our bikes. They also let us hang our wetsuits in their cellar to dry. It wasn't the cheapest but totally suitable.
Hope this may help some of you that are considering doing this race, i would definitely recommend it.
he hills were nothing (I train on the Eastnor Castle course). I done the group ride on the Thursday before hand and the weather was terrible come race day when the weather was good I got to the top of the climb and thought is this it? I'd say if you didn't have to run after the bike you wouldn't need to move out of the big ring at all
The run was a mixture of cobbles and gravel with some sun spots but nothing really to worry about. The 4 laps makes it mentally easier than 1,2 or 3 lap courses.
Only down side was the post race food, far better at Frankfurt and to some extend IMUk last year.
All in all this was my best IM so far but may e because I set a new PB
Cake - Kasespaetzle with crispy fried onions! Nuernberger Bratwurstl mit Sauerkraut and mash. Schnitzel Cordon Bleu und Pommes. Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfelmuss.Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte. yummmm.
Don't shout at me Cake Na fear not, i'm not a Fetchie. Yeah like Gaz said, i think it was mentioned on the swimming thread about giving folk a shove if they need it to keep on with their training. I've been good though - did sprint tri yesterday Thighs are killing me today right enough! I was dreading it, truth be told, but enjoyed it okay once I realised i'd survive the swim, and I feel i've got my mojo back a bit, training-wise, which is all good
Ali, cheers for the race reports, sounds better all the time!

Here's another two maps of the route.
This course is no worse than Bala or Vit in terms of terrian. Now behave!
Have you planned that Everest trip yet?
that course comes out at about 8 .. easy

Oy, it's almost a year yet! My IM training starts on 22 November and not a day sooner.
Wrong end of the stick Cake, someone wrote that for motivation you can get someone to nag you to entice you to train.
Sure it was not Lee that wrote it, but I was just using it as a reference that we are just as good if not better at doing the same sort of thing
BOO!!!!!
