....it's OK Caz .................next year he will be in front.
How are you diddling Dave? Obviously the guts are feeling a bit with all the junk food. But how is the body in general? Any aches or stiffness (...I'm being innocent!) or are you all set to go again?
Went out with my friend this AM and were discussing VLM. Still in total amazement. You've got one hell of a PB to beat now.
Phil - I'm good for Sunday AM. Out Saturday night - wedding party - but I will drive and be a good girl. So you are driving down from Cardiff then? Do you want me to meet you somewhere or I can text you my address.
Looking forward to the build up to the Veterans Race now. Haha. Gutted now that I'm not gonna be there. Oh well.............the 2012 reunion will come soon enough.
Fab photos Dave. Just one quick question - how do you fuel on the way round? No water bottle, no sign of gels etc. Do you just use what is on offer?
All the fast runners seem to run with nothing. The elites have their chosen fuel at the various stations. But what about the fast club runners? You must need something on the way round surely...............
Fred Flintstone overtook me at 25M, shortly followed by a girl! 25M was not a good mile!
on the upside though, at least i did get overtaken by the fastest flintsone in the world!
Ha Ha Ha! Great/Troubled minds think alike! i was sat on the train on the way home today thinking, maybe i should give Edinburgh another go!? hmmmmmm.
Feeling much more upbeat today, the positives are ive set PB's in every distance this year so far, and most importantly for me, ive remained injury free! going to class the past 4months as a really good solid base to push on for the rest of the year, currently working out my training plan for project sub 34mins 10K
P.S, have i ever told you guys that your the greatest!
I'm sorry but I was really tempted to text you that Superman and Fred Flintstone had finished ahead of you.... When Mr CS used to spectate I'd look at the photos he'd taken afterwards and oh look Captain America was head of me, Noddy was ahead of me, the girl in the very skimpy outfit was ahead of me, etc etc. I did get my own back when he did the Kilomathon and I was spectating... I let it be known that a Whoopee Cushion, a fireman in full gear inc breathing apparatus and a Heart had finished ahead of him (there were probably lots more but they were the only ones I saw by the time I got to the finish).
Come to Edinbu-u-u-u-u-u-urgh... there's bound to be a spare place floating around somewhere... someone must've picked up an injury during the silly mileage weeks...
I agree DT - This thread is amazing. I was almost in tears at Philby's post yesterday. Made me feel very humble indeed.
**covers ears** Not listening, not listening, not listening, not listening, not listening. Don't mention the E word and can we refer to it as 'the Scottish race' in future?
Fi - I tried something different this year. I used to have gels in elastic pouches that my mum sewed on to the back of my shorts (honestly) There was enough space for 2 which wasn't enough so last year I went with 2 and then picked up a Lucozade one at mile 23 which wasn't my usual brand (usually SIS) Having played around with gels I decided that I liked the Lucozade ones again as they are more substantial and you feel like you have eaten something. The taste isn't great so I take them at water stations. So this years fuel was as follows;
0.5 litres of SIS Energy drink - Sipping for 3 hours pre race
0.25 litres of Hornet Juice - Drink from 45 mins pre race to start of race
8 miles - Lucozade Gel (carried in inside pocket of shorts)
14 miles - Lucozade Gel from fuel station at 14 miles
21 miles - SIS Caffeine Gel that was safety pinned (top and bottom) to side of shorts
I avoided all Lucozade drinks on the course and took water at approx every other water station after about 5 miles.
DT - Do you mean that you were passed by a man dressed as a girl or an actual girl?
Fa la la Edinburgh Edinburgh Edinbu-u-u-u-u-u-urgh
I really like this thread... the support from everyone is amazing... it doesn't matter if you're a 5min miler or an 11min miler everyone gets the same respect and cheer when they achieve a new PB or the required amount of sympathy if they pick up an injury. There isn't any judging in here which as an 11min miler is a bit daunting about some of the other threads... There are so many people on the forum who belittle the slower runners and I've even seen a thread where they were practically discouraged from running a particular race as it annoys the faster runners to have all these "fun runners" getting in their way. But there is none of that in here... (((((GROUP HUG)))))
This is rather a unique little mini-forum within RW, you are right on the money, I can't recall any elitist type drivel from any of the guys and gals who regularly chip in here, so yup I'm up for a GROUP HUG
Just been out for a 4 miler at 7:30 pace, god its warm in Cardiff, must have hit 20 this morning by the time I got back.
The reallty interesting bit is a comment half way in where it says the the Long Slow Run teaches the body to be able to do just that, RUN a LONG WAY SLOWLY, and is not necessarily used to aid pace/performance - many people do say that the LSR main use is a slower/less injury likely session that builds endurance, but equally it will not in any way improve your ability to sustain pace that you wish to perform a marathon at. Intersting read and basically says that for Marathon training to improve pace you need to run just below AT to improve race pace.
Not sure I can commit to the levels of training it recommends but good stuff nonetheless
ooooooooo................enjoyed that group hug................
Totally, totally agree with above sentiments Caz and Philby. Never thought I would continue running after my first half. But here we are over two years later still at it. And that is no small part to this forum. Just being able to join in the banter, the highs, the lows - both online and in my head when I'm out - is amazing, inspirational and very, very supportive.
Thanks for feedback on fuelling Dave. Wondered how you managed to stay fuelled without carrying the copius amounts of kit that I seem to carry. What the hell is Hornet Juice?
Can't believe that some people actually tried to discourage slower paced people not to enter races. Some people just make you sooooo mad.
Another question. You burn 'x' amount of calories per hour of running. So does that mean that being a slower runner I would actually burn more calories than a Dave or a Darren. Even though it would appear that the speed machines put in more effort. Just wondering................as this may well be a very good reason for me not to speed up!! Haha.
Sorry Fi, the calories per hour would be greater for Willo & Whippet... But the calories per mile is fairly consistent no matter what pace you run... So if you say 1 mile burns 100 calories (which I think is near enough right) then it doesn't matter if you run that mile in 5mins or 12mins it would still burn 100 calories.
It's a mis-spelling, I think it's meant to have a y at the end instead of a t - maybe that's his secret! So girls have you ordered your photos of Dave?
I digress, been a lovely day here too and have been trying to teach the kids how to play cricket in the garden, it's not going well and they've wandered off.
Caz I take my hat off to you, that is an amazing challenge you've set yourself, i'd love to give the Goofy challenge a go, except lack of funds might be a problem. Good luck in the training, I know you can do it.
Phil hope you have a few good days down in Cardiff and manage to get some faggots while your there.
Ha ha - Horney Juice, isn't that another name for Viagra (or Guiness)
Apparently Hornet Juice has been developed after studying hornest that fly up to 60 miles in one day. Apparently they secrete some chemical that gives them excessive levels of endurance. Something to do with metabolising fat stores and converting them in to energy more easily thereby preserving your glycogen stores.
It works as I have the marathon PB to prove it.
Ok then before we build up to the Edi smackdown then there is something that I need some advice on.
What do people think about Willo for a boy or Willow for a girl?
YEEEEEAAAAHHHHHH!!!! finally he breaks the greatest news this year! as said previously, awesome news mate, this really is a great year for you isnt it! Berlin, is dedicated to Palmer Jnr! I just hope he/she manages to wear you down enough by then to allow me to play catchup!
What a six months it's been really with the wedding and now this and all that's happened in between. It's been really difficult to keep it to myself as I love sharing good news.
The only negative is that the baby is due (we think) on the 6th November which is marathon Sunday in NYC. I've paid to enter and booked 2 hotel rooms on a non-refundable basis That means we will have to pay for my mums room and our but not go ((
Hoping that the scan will show that Jo is due on the 9th or something which gives me a whole 3 days to get home
Yesterday Caz says lets have a "Group hug" and a few hours later dave is announcing he is gonna be a dad. Boy you are good dave, superman isnt a patch on you
.....if it's a boy Dave you can add at least another 10 days to the due date. Boys are sooooo laid back they are normally in no hurry to make an appearance and always late ...........too much like hard work.
Just got back in from a hilly 7 miler. Blooming eck it's hot out there now......and we left at 8.20ish. Phil think if possible we need to get out before 9 on Sunday.
As if my joy wasn't bubbling over already I have just discovered that the London photographers captured my greatest moment that I feared was lost forever.
I think I told you about my little bit of showboating in Parliament Square? Well it was captured on film on the marathonfoto.com website Bib no 32192 surname Palmer. Its the first pic on the 3rd row and I don't need to tell you guys how hard this is after 25.5 miles
Hahaha, excellent Dave... Not too sure about the next one though
It must be a man thing... Mr CS can do that heel click thing to the side... I've tried to do it loads of times... not after 25.5miles I hasten to add... usually when we're alone up a hill or something on a hike... and I just can't do it. Fi, can you do it, or is it just me???

Fred Flintstone was pretty nippy too... He got the World Record for cartoon character.

Am reading a very interesting article
Fat as a Fuel for Marathon Training
