SR thanks for that, hopefully my mind and body will both have the same idea tomorrow morning.

Stig & FF - definately going to look at elastic laces, they would have been a god send last yera in my ultra when I have to take my trainer off for medical treatment, doing the laces up afterwards was quite painful.

takje care everyone and enjoy your weekend

Looking in to see how you are all getting on. Getting to niggle time, I see. Plenty of rest or just a good sleep (sorry Danny!) needed between runs. I remember last year, taking until about Thursday to recover from my LSR on a Sunday, the short mid week runs were harder than the LSR!
Those elastic laces sound great. I lace up missing out the middle holes, it takes the pressure off the bridge of my foot but means that the tongue sometimes bunches up. That pressure can cause so much pain over time, so thanks for the tip Stig and FF.
You all sound like you are doing really well. Well done on the PB half marathon times and also to Toby on your mile splits. All confidence boosting!
Out to celebrate with the rest of my Tough Guy Team tonight ...and I will be drinking, not doing a LSR so it would be rude not to.
    Happy Running all.

    Evening all

Well that’s the last LSR of February done should have done 19 miles but when i looked at my training routes i to my surprise i never had a 19 mile one planned out so i decided to run the 20 mile route i did a couple of weeks ago and just stop at 19 miles as i would nearly home any

The run went Ok most miles were run at 10:30m/m pace a couple were slower and a few were faster any way got to the 19 mile mark and it seem a shame not to do the extra mile so ended up doing the 20 miles the whole run took 3:28:30 with an Avg pace of 10:24 m/m

Had another shock when i compared it to LSR i did 2 weeks ago over the same route i was about 9:30 minutes quicker

Toby, that's an excellent run! Well done! image

And another 20 miler planned next saturday eh toby.....

    Phew, well done Tobyimage

What a difference 10 degrees makes!!!  Very warm on run this evening.  LSR last sunday was done early evening so it was a bit chilly then.  Must dig the shorts out as they could be needed this weekendimage.  Have not been losing weight which is disappointing (plenty to lose) but noticed that my body fat has reduced considerablyimage.  Muscle weighing more than fat coming into play here.

Visiting the Ronald McDonald House in Brighton next week.  I'm running to raise funds for them and it will be good to see what is provided.  Taking photos to put on a poster at work (McDonald's Horsham).

    Getting closer now.......50 days tomorrow......ooer!

Does anyone else start to feel nervous the closer it gets image

For some reason my plan says a LSR of 18 miles this weekend but in a time of 2:35. If I'm not mistaken that's at my planned marathon pace of 8:30 m/m. Surely that can't be right image

When the last e mail came through saying 52 days to go i had to go and count the days left in my training plan and sure enough was 52.....I can never believe how fast a year goes!!  Was last May i signed up to do all this get your arse off the sofa running lark for the third time and here we are 50 days to go!!!

Im getting nervous and excited too would like to beat my previous times only cos i know this will definately be my last marathon and also cos its my last i really want to enjoy the whole day...

Happy LSR to all this weekend..

Must concur with all that’s been said about nerves and excitement and a big lot of fear and trepidation and a lot of Oh my god have i really gone and done it again and a smidgen i don’t know whether i can run 26.2 miles again

Yvonne yes i have another 20 planned for next week then a cut back week as i have the Bath H/M then i may well ditch the 22 mile run i had planned for the week after and do a 17 as i would have done 4x20 mile runs then it the start of my taper with a 16

  • Options
My LSR done - hurrah!!! I ended up doing 17.57M @ 08.59 average pace. I know its too fast for a LSR but I just get into a comfortable rhythm and stick with it. I'm very metronomic so my pace stays consistent throughout. That said, I did stop at 6M and 12M for a gel and this isn't factored into my time. I'm just really pleased I've done the distance - the time is irrelevant.

Time to put on my recovery tights and do a bit of light stretching! image

Good luck with your LSR - how lucky are we to get this great weather! image

I to have done my long slow run in the glorious sunshine image

Must admit after going all out last weekend doing a 8.53 pace half i made sure i ran slow this weekend, that said at some points i looked at my pace and was doing 9.30 so slowed it a bit ended up doing 17.50 miles at an average pace of 10.26 in 3 hours and 2 minsalthough those 2 mins dont count cos i had a call of nature half way round...how come you can drink your tea at 7 oclock and it stays in your system until mile 9 of your run 3 hours later!!! Sorry if thats too much info for some image

Yvonne and Fay well done on the runs good times

Wow well done Yvonne and F Faye, that's some fantastic Finns your clocking. After feeling nervous about possible toe pain I managed a 4.5 tempo run last night in my 'old' trainers with no problems at all. I'm definately gonna invest in the elastic laces, anything that can help I will try at the moment.
I have another LSR of 18 planned tomorrow I'm doing it in my old shoes then I'll have a better idea if the new ones are wrong. Planning a R/w approach.
Just on the way home after seeing x factor 'tragic I know' and I was considering stopping off somewhere and having a nice meal and a couple if vinos then ditching the LSR till Monday, but after reading this thread I feel inspired to run so instead I'll head home make a huge bowl of pasta and hit the sack early.

You really are an inspiring lot!!

Stig I'm only a novice but 2.35 does sound a bit fast when training whatever u chose to do stay safe and injury free it would be awful to have to pick up an injury now at this stage!

    Happy running all imageimageimage
  • Options

Stig, can't remember what time you are going for, but 2:35 would be faster than a 4hr marathon pace! If you're aiming for 4 hours, I'd suggest 18 at around 3hours! (assuming reasonably flat-ish) Vary as appropriate. image

Sarah, Good decision, I am impressed!

Off dancing tonight, so restricted running this weekend ...

Hope you've all been out enjoying your LSRs in the sunshine. A 3 mile short tempo @ 7:57 for me today. Felt really good considering I've got 17 miles in my legs from Thursday. Doing it as a run/walk has really helped with my recovery. Now time to lie on the sofa and watch the rugby.

lovely outing today. After 3 disrupted weeks, the plan said 15, I'd have settled for 10. So 14.25 went down really well. Rediscovered my running mojo in spades. image

Have a good training week, only 8 weeks until M-day...

no idea what my pace is now.

Did fast intervals for 5 miles on thursday and averaged 7.30 over three of those.

Went to amazing seminar with Full Potential. it was free and if you get a chance go to one. All day and loads learnt. We did a very closely monitored tempo session with 4 x 5m, and I was doing 6.45 mm and in amongst 5 other people who were all 3.30 marathon people.

Did my LSR run today by far my longest ever run. Took it easy and ended up doing 18.5 with another 1.5 walk to warm down. 10mm including two toilet stops (I know), two walking stints to get some liquid inside me and plenty of stopping at roads as it was central London. No real aches, no problem with calfs at all, but not sure how much I could have upped it.

Very nervous now, but calf pain gone and going to run a 10 mile race in Battersea Park next week instead of 13 mile LSR.

Beautiful weather, but I lost a good friend and colleague yesterday so mostly was thinking about him and thinking I should just feel lucky to be alive and not getting obsessive about finish times and pacing.

Nice runs all round it seems from everybody.

Great day for training!!!! Been resting a sore knee though, so rolled out my yoga mat on the deck OUTSIDE instead image Gotta listen to your body. Really excited about the New Forest 20 in a couple of weeks - any one else got this pencilled in as part of their training. Hubby and I will be the barefoot ones. xx

If your up for some specialised yoga for runners prior to Brighton - I'm teaching on the Saturday afternoon.

Rondo - is this your first marathon? your posts suggest it is, so apolgies if I've mis read that.

I was told to not fret about time for the first one. It was better to complete it than complete with it and loose. Set yourself a few targets:
    1) this would be a perfect day and be absolutely magic
    2) this would be a good day at the office
    3) this was a bliddy hard day and I'm pleased to have finished.

Where you set those is difficult to know, but you sounds like you'd really benefit from a race to figure out what shape you're in, and then pop that into a calculator and see what sort of prediction you get.

Emma S-G I'm afraid I live too far away but otherwise would have loved to join your yoga class. Sure you'll tut at this (:0) but I've bought a yoga book and do a few 'poses' at home. Not sure I'm doing them right (I guess thats why I need to go to a class) but I've found it has helped to loosen off any tightness. Any tips? image

    Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd poke my head in and say Hi.  I'm doing Brighton this year, it'll be my 2nd ever marathon after running Belfast last year.

Really looking forward to this one, and keeping the fingers crossed for a sub 4-hour time this time (3:59:59 will do just nicely!!).

Some great running going on at the moment from what I've read.  I completed my 17-mile LSR this morning in 2 hours 42mins.  Done most of it at 10+mm, but managed 3 miles from mile 7.5 to 10.5 at 9mm marathon pace, then the last 2 at 8mins30sec per mile.

The good lady (yes, despite the name, I'm male!) and I are headed to Brighton the day before the marathon, staying at Jurys.  Anyone got any recommendations on a good restaurant where I can load up on pasta in the city centre?

    Cheers,

Hello all what a lovely day for running its been we can only pray for this temperature on April 15th

Firstly, rondo so sorry to hear the news about your friend, it does put everything into perspective

Lindsay - welcome great to hear your progressing well towards your really impressive target!

Emma the yoga class sounds great but as I'm travelling down with hubby and 2 kids I'm not sure they'd be too pleased if I abandoned them for any more

Well thanks to all of your advise and support I managed my longest run ever today. Set out to do 18 but misjudged the route and ended up doing 19. I used the much discussed run walk approach running 10 then walking 1 tried not to get hung up on speed, just tried to run comfortably and stay tuned in to any niggles that may come. Used my old trainers and had absolutely no problem with mt toes today so I was thrilled.

Managed the lot in 3h 17 mins which is 11 mins faster than my very painful 18 last week. I am delighted. I was ready for throwing in the towel after Thursdays painful run, but I can honestly say that you lot have inspired me to carry on so a huge thank you!!

Rest day tomorrow for me then starts my toughest week on the plan with a 52 mile total. Bring it on!!!!!!! imageimageimage

Fair amount of activity over the last couple of days.

    Welcome toall new posters!

Enjoyed my easy run today (averaged about 1mm slower than hoped for MP and found it quite hard sticking to slow pace, but it's in every plan I've read so ...)  Actually, the hardest part was avoiding the many scooters on the seafront.

Sounds like some great running going on, e.g. well done Sarah on the 19 (glad the toes are good!) and Helen on the 14.5 and Rondo on the 18.5 and Yvonne on the 17.5.

Rondo, I think Helen's advice is sound. Two things that can really catch you out on the first marathon are:

    1) You may not have enough training miles in the legs

    2) It's very difficult not to run the first half too fast!

And that's to say nothing of variability of performance with weather conditions, etc etc etc.So just enjoy the day. really glad to hear the calves are improving tho. That sounds very positive. image

SiSBG, yes, I'm definitely getting nervous and excited!

Lindsay, sounds like a good LSR.

Emma, your yoga class sounds good, but I don't think I can risk a new exercise regime starting the day before a marathon image

Rondo that's real sad news about your friend.
Been struggling to get running the last 2 weeks, work has been too busy.
I had a bit of a manic weekend, 2hours of badminton Friday night meant my knees were a little sore all day Saturday, Saturday 8.30am one of my boys hit a gas pipe while chopping up a customers kitchen floor so Saturday am was spent trying to find a plumber while doing the kids swimming lesson run, the Mighty 'Orns forgot to be mighty and got battered on Saturday pm, 7 hours at work Sunday trying to clear my desk and finally at 4pm Sunday I got to run. Ran home only 15miles but gave it some speed for the last 3 miles and somehow managed them in 7.30mm. Unheard of for me I think there was a certain amount of stress release in them or was it that I actually managed a full nights sleep Saturday night - 10 whole hours!!! What have I been missing?
Or was it lack of alcohol? Not a drop all week then I had 3 pints Friday night and 1 on way to football but that's all, that's almost teetotal in comparison to my normal intake.

Now I don't know whether to do the Berko half next week or do a proper long run. Going to try to do 3 runs this week and 1 on Sunday but I have Wembley tickets Wednesday (Club Wembley tickets too - free ones - prawn sandwich zone), Mrs H is out Friday, month end to do, oh and a business to hand over to its new owners Wednesday night - another quiet week.

Hello new people! Welcome to the thread!

    Rondo, sorry about your friend.

So, I think I've figured out what set my ankle off the other week. I think my feet swell up too much once I get to about 13-15 miles into a run and I start rolling my left foot out to compensate for the pain at the top of my left foot. I really can't afford to buy new shoes, but will do if I have to. Any ideas on re-lacing or elastic laces? Do you think that will help? Or am I destined to buy new shoes? image I had to stop at mile 14 of a 16 mile run on saturday morning due to pain and general tiredness, but I blame a leaving do the night before for that.

Rondo, losing someone does, as you say, put life into perspective....and makes you more thankful for all we do have.....

Faya i was hoping to get away with my trainers from last year but im finding my left ankle is rolling out due to lack of support now...think ive done too many miles in them now...brooks adrenaline for me hoping to get the 12 series..i was an asics girl before but having been persuaded by my local specialist running shop to try brooks im converted they are soooo comfortable with plenty of toe room and arch support and ankle support....but i suppose really i should get another pair for my circuit and gym work and not usemy running runs they may last longer...oopsy..

Danny ,phew i got out of breath reading your post...its amazing you found time to run and had the inclination to after all of that i think i would of just collapsed on the sofa!! so good on you image
