agree with Kaz on that one - forget going fast for now - simply take it easy for as long as you can to build some miles into your legs without putting too much pressure on them.

Seen everyone has been enjoying the heat! Did a 15 mile run the other night before the thunderstorms started but boy was it humid!!! Never sweated so much in my life. Really on course now - had three really good solid weeks with around 60 miles each week in the bank - just need a couple more 20 mile runs in there before concentrating more on speed work. Really cannot wait now - keep checking the countdown on the site -even my kids are excited.

Just back from the physio where he confirmed my worst fear- that I have tendonitis in my achillies. No running for a couple of weeks, so Berlin is now looking doubtful unless I can get by on about 6 weeks of training. PB out the window for another year.

David - really sorry to hear this. The PB can wait. However, I suspect you will still be better prepared than me! I hope you're able to rest (what with work and all) - still looking forward to that beer after Berlin.

Thanks all, looks like when I do start running again it will be slow as advised by you guys.

Kaz- I would take a 1 x 15 & 1 x 20 right now, if I could manage that I think I would be able to get around at the very least.

Iain- always up for post marathon beers! How did In The Long Run Go?, must have been tough!

Got the hospital tomorrow morning to see about my kidney stone and the physio in the evening.

David - I hope tomorrow goes well.

In The Long Run (ITLR) was incredibly hard, the heat was astonishingly bad, but we did it. Immensely proud of what we achieved. But mainly glad it's over!

Just back from the physio, from Monday onwards I can cycle and next weekend I can start light running (no more than 6 miles to start with), no speed-work for 3-4 weeks though. So hopefully the Great North Run and Berlin are back on!

At the hospital this morning I got another xray to see what the situation with the kidney stone is. Got examined by the doctor who then told me to make an appointment to go back in 6 weeks time, got xrayed and didn't get the results. Is this normal? Iain?

Dw - I didn't manage to 'do a kaz' and walk/ran paris to come in at a massive personal worst. Had an absolute ball though hanging out and meeting randoms at the back. Think I drove some people mad but at least it took their mind off the pain. Did have one girl come up after crying and thanking us for keeping her going. image

Did she ever contact you again? Maybe we'll see her next year? image

i agree with Iain - ITLR was hard and I'm glad it's over but it really was a lot of fun!

im not starting to think about Berlin yet.it's my brain... It needs a breakimage

Another slight calf pain for me. Didn't go ping but it stiffened up and was sore.

Currently RICE and I've ordered some calf guards. May just have to focus on getting around.

I get the feeling that quite a lot of people are not anticipating a good run for berlin due to all the injuries.

With this being my first marathon I am highly under prepared image i am currently only capable of running 12 miles and after this I am aching so much! Im hoping I can build this up to 20miles by the begining of september which will give me a good chance of finishing the marathon.

Donkey if your plan is to run 20 miles by early September then you are actually tack rack.

Have you run any races prior?

It could be that you're running your long runs too fast. What pace are you running at - and how did you pick this pace?

What other training are you doing during the week?

Evening guys, me again!  Thought I'd pop my head around the door again and say hello.  Had to disappear and rediscover my form and focus.

To add to the tales of woe on this thread I had a bit of a nightmare June, only managing a shocking 4 runs in 19 days at one point.  Suffered from a major mojo loss and just couldn't get out the door, prefering to stuff my face with biscuits, chocolate and ice cream instead!!

Felt completely burnt out big time and reckon I might've had some sort of virus.  One day I ran a 3 miler at slow/recovery pace and for the next three days I felt like I do the day after a 20 miler!  So have had to write off large chunks of my training, press the reset button and start again.

Managed to build myself up and have now got a couple of 30 mile weeks behind me and hit a shade under 36 miles this week so I am starting to get somewhere.  Built the Sunday long run in the last couple of weeks from 12 to 14 and 16.5 today, but they are hard going!  Am fading badly towards the end of each LSR mind.

Got a half booked in for two weeks today and that'll give me a decent indicator of where I'm at.  Tried a parkrun yesterday at planned HM pace and it was not at all easy, gulp!

I do hope this Berlin 2013 thread isn't cursed!

Next mara is 11august but I'm not sure about it. had nothing from the organisers and sounds a bit naff but we'll see. It's close to home.

    how is everyone else doing?

Emmy - tales of woe abound. Just ordered a pair of calf guards that you recommended to RR. Let's see if they help.

Have you recovered after ITLR? How far did you run?

    how about you?

David - they will review the xray films (probably at a specialist stone xray meeting) to decide whether you willl need further treatment to remove any residual stone and, if so, whether they can allow it to sort itself out? Good luck. Keep the fluids up!

The Monk - I was hit with a similar viral thing in June/July. Best not injuring yourself when unwell - there's still time to (hopefully) get some form for Berlin...!

after a bad year with calf pain and tears last year i can highly recommend the calf guards (although not used them in the hot weather) - bought Compress Sport guards straight after Berlin and had no lower leg trouble at all since, even sometimes sit at work with them on to just aid recovery.

Haha Donkey, been there done that!

    How's everyone's week been?

Another step up in terms of mileage this week, 3 miles better than last week at 38.  My usual when marathon training is 45 to 50 so I am slowly getting back to where I like to be.

However, a horrific LSR today.  First 18 miler of the campaign and the final 3M were hell!  Got to 15 and bonked!  Was slow in relative terms today anyway but the last 3M were snail-like and shameful image  Still a cut-back week this coming week and got a half marathon to race next Sunday so the cut-back week couldn't be better timed.

Anyone ever had experience of a strained abdominal muscle?  My lower abdomen has hurt when I've sneezed or coughed and can't do a sit-up either.  Been like this for about 4 weeks.  Feel I need to go to the doctors but terrified he'll say no running for a fortnight or something similar!

    Room for one more?

Hi guys, I'm new to this thread - I'm feeling all your pain - calves, hip flexors and lost mojo! I'm trying to convince myself that I'm just going to run it for the experience and not worry about the time but secretly I know that's crap coz I really want to get under the 4 hour mark!  Donkey 388 - have you tried Nipple Guards - my other half swears by them after a very nasty 'nipple hanging off incident' a couple of months ago.  I've not used calf guards - I do sometimes wear compression socks as do get tight calves but maybe I'll give them a go.  My running style has changed as my pace has improved and I run much more on my toes but my calves do get tight this way - anyone else suffer like this?

Anyway - good to be on the thread - see you all in Berlin!image

  • Options

Wow, this is nearly an injury forum!  I also must sympathise as my training has been massively hampered by injury and loss of mojo! First a stress fracture of my foot when I was absolutely flying and after 8 weeks back training i am still 7minutes off my pre-injury 1/2mara time. Really struggling for form and motivation especially on my LSR and suffer dehydration and cramp far more often than i should.  That and in the last month i have had numerous horrific blisters (bleeding feet and lost toe nails)

Well done Monk on completing your LSR, i bonked on mine too but couldn't keep going like you managed.

@Jules -yep running on toes is much harder on calves but you do adapt to it.

So is there a big meet up planned?  I have never been to Berlin and I'm heading over alone so it would be good to have other crazy people to talk to

    Hi all

    Room for one more?

My training is going OK for Berlin. Up to 40 miles a week but had a bad week last week as I felt so tired and only managed two runs rather than a planned four. I usually do five runs but I did the London 100 ride yesterday - had no problem at all - felt fantastic actually and had a brilliant day.

I'm going to get back to focusing on my running this week. My training plan says do a 20 miler this sunday but as I missed most of last week should I complete last weeks training plan i.e. do a 15 miler, which I know I can do rather than push myself to do 20?

Monk - Sorry to hear about your LSR and strange muscle ache. Have you tried breathing exercises?

Ciaran/Claire/Jules - Welcome to the thread! What are your plans for Berlin? Time? or just to finish and enjoy it?

I agree that we need to start sorting out a meet up/dinner. What would people prefer? a dinner the night before? or just meet up at the start for a photo and maybe someone to run with (based upon averaged end time)?

I've got my first set of warm up 'mara's' on Sunday. The aim for this one is to sort out my fuelling and drinking.

    Hello all.

Remember me?  Probably not – remember I was here for a bit complaining about archilles tendinopathy before Edinburgh and you all gave me some kind advice. Well I’m back – as promised – truth be told I have been sulking for about 8 weeks.  Training has been tough, ankle has been a proper pain (literally) and I’ve stayed away from anything that is talking about running as the last thing I wanted to read was how great people were doing and how many big distances people were completing!  Why?  The bitter truth was that I was maybe not going to be able to do Berlin.  But alas – with copious amounts of physio and acupuncture and some sensible (ish) training, I think the ankle is showing signs of improving.  The big test was this weekend – I’ve only managed a single 13 miler since Edinburgh and a tough 10 miler with hills (believe it or not, I didn’t realise there were hills until I ran it) – where at the beginning of the week I was thinking 15, then by Saturday night I’d decided on 20 (don’t ask!) – but all in all I go out in the rain and smashed out a 18.5 mile run – and touch wood – the ankle seems ok. I know a big increase in training is not supposed to help my injury, but the longer I waited, the less likely Berlin was anyhow. But I’ve noo pain lingering around – so we’re not out of the woods yet but it was encouraging.

Notice Em is mentioning meeting up etc – I’d still like to get involved with this.  Definitely up for meeting up before the event and is anyone wandering out for food and drink after the marathon?  (I tend to spend the night before getting pumped up and to bed early – get the old plasters on the nipples so they’re nice and stuck J)

On a separate note – and a general question – what do you guys do in terms of recovery after a long run?  And by this I mean, when do you train again?  I’m thinking after yesterdays 18 miler – should probably rest today?  I’m supposed to be doing a 6am run tomorrow as have something planned in the evening, but the adrenalin is telling me to go off and do some spin or cross training tonight.  Urge v Common Sense?  What would you guys do?

Julesowen - I will certainly look into them! This marathon malarky is turning into an expensive venture! aha

Claire4 - Congratulations on doing the London 100! That's something I really want to do, however, I have not cycled for such a long time and I know it will take years just to get myself into a position where I am not crashing into every other cyclist!

    E mmyE mmy ✭✭✭

Donkey - I said the same thing and managed a 100km cycle yesterday!

Jase - Welcome back! I think it depends on your training and injury - I will always do a recovery run/gym the day after a LSR to loosen me up.

The initial plan would be: Dinner the night before and meeting up in a pub after the marathon but I'll need to put out the call for Berlin restaurants and bars that are good.

  • Options

Well I'm kind of not thinking of the injury too much - I'm either going to do it or I'm not. I am thinking a 40 minute cycle or something at the gym to loosen up, then a run tomorrow morning.  We will see!! I'll decide at 5pm!

I'm definately up for meeting up after, maybe before too. I can't help with places....never been the Berlin!

  • Options

Yeah I'd be interested in meeting up before and after.  If there is anyone looking for someone to sight see with too I would be interested.

My aims for berlin have declined dramatically - before my stress fracture sub 3hr, now sub 3:30 and if i dont get my weekly mileage (only 26miles last week) and long run up dramatically it could change to just get around. But i just want to enjoy the weekend so i am not going to stress unduly.

Anyone got any magical ways of avoiding blisters? I have many shoe manufacurers in different sizes, different socks, I've tried letting my feet go hard, keeping them soft, vaseline, plasters, strapping, talc (not all at once) and they still bled so bad yesterday i just threw away my socks image...

Eem but dont let thay influence if you would like me as a sight seeing buddy!

  • Options

Ciaran - what socks are you using? I was in the same boat as you, however, it all stopped when I bought some xSocks. They are, however quite expensive when you consider the fact that its £15 for one pair of socks!
