The piratey way is usually to get them drunk and take charge of the credit card and enter the IM for them... but we can evolve !

Question - any benefit to be gained in cycling by going to the gym and doing weights to strengthen my legs?

yep but only if you do proper free weights... not that silly resistance machine stuff, you'd be better off just staying on the bike
Squats (every variation) including Pistol Squats if you're hard enough and deadlifts, will also build core strength like no one's business. Add in shoulder press, bench and pull ups and you're a machine....
when I get my ass back into some sort of order this is what i will be doing in prep for IM with the discipline training
Nursey I would say yes but then mine were not that strong anyway ... I found that upper body weights helped with swimming as well, that said if you are going to the gym then use it for good core work as well

M...eldy - I seem to missed out the getting drunk part!!!! The rest - credit card and IM enter, yes that's been well and truely done, but getting drunk...no!!!

so much easier with smartphones and wireless technology nowadays, we should see if we can sign anyone up at the Outlaw on Saturday, wear pirate shirts, carry a clipboard, look official stop and ask people at HMM... maybe get some flyers printed... watch us race tomorrow, be a part of the world's largest tri club etc etc
