I'm not a natural speed demon and I don't really enjoy it once it gets mid 40s upwards but had 52mph a couple of times when I was in the Alps according to the garmin anyway, once coming down Croix de Fer and once off the Galibier/Lauteret when I admit I could probably have got a bit more as a mate reckons he was nudging 60 on the same descent same day. I prefer technical descents to the straight down let go of the brakes ones.
Stede Hill near Maidstone is a fave of mine - about a kilometre with the steepest part near the bottom - after descending it a few weeks ago I whooped. 55mph when I checked after getting home
I realise this thread has morphed into something different now, but anyway:
So my highest speed recorded downhill is about 45 mph. This is usually achieved on the same downhill bit and there's a very sharp camber but the surface is ok. At the fastest point of descent I can feel the rear tyres oscillating/swerving/squirreling a bit - not quite sure how to describe it. My bike is a ridgeback cerium, so not an out and out road bike.
Is this a common thing, or do I need to look at the componentry of my bike, or do I just Man The F*ck Up? I run Alex Rims disced wheels with 25 mm tyres.
Snap I've had a similar thing in the past be interested to hear what the brighter folks say about it but at a guess would say was to much of your weight forward or not enough grip on the tyre/road. What sort of air pressure do you normal have on wheel's when it happens?
Last time out I'd pumped to 120 by the gauge. Got a bit over enthusiastic with my new track pump. But this has happened on lower pressures too. Don't think I ever ride with less than 90 psi.
Not really sure what you mean by oscillating/swerving - a speed wobble would be more dramatic than that usually and affect the bike not just the rear wheel and normally at speed cross winds etc affect the front end of the bike not the rear. Soft tyres might cause that feeling but so long as you have 70psi plus in I can't see it.
Cross post - if you are routinely sticking in 100plus psi that's high end of normal for 25mm - especially if they are a make that run big - eg Michelin pro4s at 25mm measure 27Mm.
as pops says, a speed wobble aka "tank slapper" usually affects the whole bike and rider and not just the rear wheel.
is your rear QR done up tight enough?? if it's slightly undertight then speed may pick this up creating a slight wobble. could also be that wheel is slightly out of true which would again probably be only noticeable under high revs.
I've only ever had a speed wobble on the bike once - descending off Saddleworth Moor on a new compact bike and with a fierce side wind - I couldn't keep the bike in the right lane even - very scary.
No, this isn't speed wobble. I know what that is. I can just feel the tyre snaking around on the road. It's unnerving. Do you hear of any catastrophic equipment failures?
Well occasionally - but its quite rare. I do think 120 PSI in a 28mm tyre is massively overdoing it. I have 25mm on and with about 80-90 PSI in the rear.
Could it be that you're overinflating it and its slightly out of round ?

Possibly. I'm going to check all of the above and let some air out of my tyres. I'll let you know if it makes a difference.
