Hi all ... I'm doing Bolton too. Aged 50, a few sprints under my belt and wimbleball 70.3 last year... Aiming for a medal at least and 15 hours at best ... Any advice appreciated. Does anyone have a link to the new bike route?
I rode part of the course today approximately 23miles of the loop, I climbed both Hunters Hill and Sheep House Lane, my strava had me as 2163 ft of climbing (there wasn't many flat parts). But to great down hill sections

I have just looked at my garmin for last years ironman bike route and I did 6778 ft of climbing
so does that mean the new route will be less of a total climb
sooooo.latest is that the bike course is submitted and will be approved or rejected in mid march....if its regected they go back to the old route which is already established........so dont do the new route too much guys!!!!
i rode some of the new part of the route last week...of course it longer than the old back half because there are only 2 laps but i think its tougher....there are 2 two new tough climbs and its pretty technical.....plus the section from croston to eccleston is pretty much all uphill....and then we all know its all uphill from eccleston back to babylon lane anyway.
of course its difficult to compare to the old route cause you only have the lonely mountain to do twice instead of 3 times so it might balance itself out...depends how you climb but i think its a bit tougher overall for the 112 miles now....its a cracking route though and if approved will open up more places.
it seems this old body needs more time to recover and get over the DOMS. After Silverstone half last Sunday which is my longest run distance & time on my feet since Henley half ironman last Sept, my legs took a real battering and let me know it.
just one 3 hour bike ride, but in the sun & dry on my race bike was my only real training this week.
faffed around at Crufts and a ladies shoot day with my shotgun but they don't really cut it as alternative training
Back to the serious stuff next week .... Or else I'll die on course at Bolton.

dont worry just make sure you get plenty of training on hills
here is the proposed new route

Is that right dave
i have not had a proper look yet but only twice up sheep house will do me
First 2 were fine mate but that 3rd time nearly killed me
Not sure about the 2 laps route being easier Dave. The comment on the new route is "2 guys from the club rode it Sunday. A lot of climbing with not much downhill was the main theme of the day." This is from the tritalk.co.uk thread here http://www.tritalk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=92889&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=195
Thanks

Feel free to disagree....
If it was easy it would be called football...
IMHO I thought 2 laps looked easier than 3, I haven't ridden the 2 lap route, but I have ridden the 3 lap on a TT bike.
Get out there and do the training and you will have no problem either way

Pudge! Sorry didn't see it in my inbox (check yours!)
crooky- I think it might be similar (as I only only joined it in mawdesey- the new bit and left it just after Belmont!)
CAR I hope your not planning that in july stormie
I am going to go out on the route during the week at some point.
Is the route marked at all or am I going to have to rely on my very poor sense of direction/memory?
No route marks I'm sorry to say
Would be great if someone riding the new route made a gpx file of it. I would like to drive over and ride the route to get a feel for it before IM

The thing with it only being two laps will it affect the support
that really helped me get up sheep house the third time
Wobbly week regarding training
