I'm 'crocked' at the moment with shin splints - so trying not to panic and am hitting my turbo trainer for a week - tough after the freedom of the hills.

Here's a current joke to cheer me up.

They've had to order an extra large hearse for Pavarotti's funeral.
    It's a "Nissan Dormer".

You'll be singing it all afternoon.

luna man - this is the roman run details. think its a bit hilly, but what the hell!! i've also been told its closer to 16 than 18 miles, but 18 is what's going in my log!!

Is their a course profile available of this race?

I guess this has already been disscussed on here already in the 1,300+ posts. Why was has it moved to Saturday this year and will revert back to on the Sunday?

  • Options
Oh poor you SZ but still 7 weeks to go plenty of time for those shin splints to get better !!This is the time i tend to get little niggles as the miles are increasing but hopefully nothing to stop me running YET!!!l
  • Options
it's moved probably to allow us to get hammered afterwards without worrying it's a school day next day

aye, chin up stevie you'll be 'reet

ta very much Mr Phil - wish I'd bothered to look for races round that neck of the woods earlier image

I think cos my personal route is 100% off-road, I'll stick with that this time to save my blister. Sounds like a great day though - best of luck ..  and same to everyone running long this weekend - it's looking like a image one.

Just found out that my cheque has been cashed, so looks like I'm "in"!!

Starting to panic as I need to get in some longer runs (and having had such a bad experience at this year's FLM - my first marathon - due to dehydration, stressing, lack of self belief etc) am wondering quite what I have let myself in for!!   Still, I hate crowds and prefer to run when it's cool - so maybe I'll be ok??

There's only one way to find out!!!

  • Options
stilldreaming - you seem to know why you didn't achieve what you wanted at flm so at least you can address those things. i did this as my first ever marathon and i'm back for my 3rd helping. make sure you put your training in and you'll be fine. the mountains of snowdonia will guide you along.btw your avatar is soooo cute.

Heat shouldn't be a problem at Snowdonia although it has been quite warm in the past.  I've done it 7 times I think and usually we've been very lucky with the weather, I've nearly always been ok in shorts and a vest.  Admittedly I take a pair of gloves with me!

Did a nice 22 mile run today.  All on the flat of course.

    Wot, no shoes?

Umm, the Llanberis Pass is about a 4-mile uphill ...  But nothing too strenuous.

  • Options
feelrunner - I'm curious to know how you did it the year it was cancelled (assume that was due to foot and mouth?)??
  • Options

stilldreaming - it was cancelled because of the weather.. which makes fellrunner's effort even more amazing/crazy depending on your point of view!  Was it just you on your own fellrunner, or where there a few of you who said, stuff if, we're doing it anyway?

16 miles today for me... I'm rather confused... I came in 20 minutes early, no walking (except having gel's can't manage running and eating at the same time) and only ached on the last mile.

    Sweet.

Hi all. I think I might be bowing out of this years race. Achilles tendinitis forced me to quit my long run at 5 miles today. Apparently over pronators (which I am) are particularly susceptible to this injury and running on hills is the worse thing that you can do! It may be that i just need new shoes, but I think the damage is done already.

Anyone had this problem? Any advice would be very welcome.

Toomuch: really pleased that your run went so well. You can have my custard at Pete's!

Hey folks, Im back from my 'wild' weekend in... Great Yarmouth!

My god, that place is unreal. (shant comment any further in case theres is anyone here who happens to live there!)

I imagine that you have all done far more miles than me this weekend, the most exercise I got was being shot smack in the middle of the forehead at point black range during painballing. My fault for playing with 6 police firearms officers. I now have a golf ball size red mark that doesnt seem to be going down very quickly!

I was another of the mad fools that ran in the wind/rain in 02!. My first snowdon marathon that was, and I must have enjoyed it cos if done em all since!

oy no you don't yet missus!  How bad is it.. stay off it, ice it regularly, get a lot of ibuprofen down you if you can - don't run for a week and see how it is next weekend.. you've done so much background work on this, you've still got some time yet to get through it.

And definitely get your shoes checked out.. sounds like they might be going...

Fingers crossed for you hun. image

oh alright then. You have dragged me out of my pit of gloom and despondency!

Swimming tomorrow morning then new shoes in the afternoon. Doing the ice and brufen thing. it's pants not running.

Paul F: Blimey you need your passport, jabs and a good police escort for those parts. i think you got of lightly with a facial protuberance.

Aunty moggy.....   have had the same prob for awhile now it's def the way you pronate that causes the problem so get your shoes checked would agree with Toomuch  ice and Ibuprofen and try small amount of massage on the lump/lumps.stretching mine alot has also allowed me to keep running still hurts after a very long run but not about to rest up yet.

stubborn and foolish  atleast that's what all the non runners in the family say.But what do they know!!!

Hope you will get it sorted in time I shall be plodding at the very back if you want company.image

hope everyone else had a good weekend.

Tortoise: Thanks for the advice. i have had the same make of shoes for a couple of years , Brookes Adrenaline, these are my 4th pair I think. i am a very severe over pronator and always have my gait analysed and try on loads of pairs. The Borookes have been the best but even they do not correct the problem. My current pair i have has since March and they are just worn out.

I will be doing a run/walk schedule ( a la john 'the Penquin' Bingham) at the back so i shall see you there. We will not be alone.

Aunt Mog - I had a problem in that area a couple of years ago and was resolved by new shoes, never appeared since.

14 miles yesterday, had intended 16-18 but went off road up hill and down dale (some pretty steep ones) and it was v warm so decided that was a good enough work out.

I find my hands get too hot in gloves.  Does this mean I'll be too cold in shorts and vest ?

I was there the year it got cancelled.  I didn't run but I know some folk did.  It was decided it was too deangerous for the marshalls to be standing around, there were trees down and some of the course was flooded.  The folk that ran said it wasn't bad because there was no traffic on the roads!!

Aunty Moggy: Achilles Tendinitis - how long! If you've got the energy, read this great forum thread. I had AT for about 6 months, but ran throughout. I fixed it with off-road running, regular shoe changes, better calf stretching, and in particular the 'eccentric' exercises described in the thread, which is really just dipping your heel below a step regularly. But there's loads of advice and different experiences on that thread. I've now been AT free since 2006!

Fantastic 18 miler on the Black Mountains this Saturday. Extremely slow, got lost in the mist on Twmpa, walked up Hay Bluff and trashed my quads and toenails racing down to Llanthony Priory, but all worth it for the stunning ridge runs. Feeling sore but optimistic now image

Moggy, its amazing jut how many injuries are solved by investing in new shoes!

Do you keep a log of how many miles your current ones have done>?

  • Options

Can't decide whether to laugh or cry.. rechecked my route from yesterday.. only to find that I was running to the WRONG road on my loop and only did 14.8 miles yesterday, not the 16 I had worked out... image

    *bangs head on wall*

AM - glad your not giving up .. yes its a nightmare not running, but best to run on a healed foot than slow your progress/make it worse.  I know how itchy those feet get!   There's always room at the back with us plodders.

Nice mark Paul  image you really were asking for trouble playing with people who can actually handle a gun!

Luna Man: Thanks for that. Your run sounds amazing!

PaulF: That is a good idea in theory. in practice I will keep a record for about a week and then it will all go horribly wrong! I usually change my shoes every 6 months, and i did know that these ones needed changing a month ago, Just didn't have the time to get to my local running shop. Have you got a good bruise? Can you sue for police brutality?

sounds like a case for internal affairs paul

    keep going am!

    well done luna

Aunt Moggy - as posted earlier I've stopped running since a 20 miler 7 days ago. medial shin splints on right leg and AT on left. The theory is rest both injuries for as long as I dare, including ICE, NSAId's and calf stretches. - Also I found compression bandages helpful especially at the early 'sore' stages. Over pronating causes all my running problems. have got good orthotics which fixed an ITBS problem which stopped me running for five weeks earlier in the year, but as the mileage and hills have increased to 17 - 20 miles the over-pronation is still causing problems in the lower legs.  I've disciplined myself on my static racing bike putting 2hr sessions to try and keep aerobic capacity up at least. Reading up about it - apparently pool running is the thing to do  if the impact of running is aggravating the problem - I bet you look really daft doing it though!

I'm off at lunchtime to Running Bear to try some motion control trainers - whatever it takes!

steve - running bear's shut on mondays. i'm going tomorrow if you fancy it
