My GPS watch measured the course at 10.14M, and several other girls in the changing rooms afterwards seemed to concur (it seemed all the mile markers were about 0.14M out from what our watches were telling us).
Anyone else notice this? I started my watch at the first chip timer band, and the GPS distance measured by my watch is normally spot on under good coverage conditions.
I agree with your comments concerning the conditions CT, I thought the wind was pretty negligible for the majority of the race and considering it's January in England.....
<what were you expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? >
Actually I would reckon the extra 0.14 miles is pretty normal allowing for not being able to take the racing line eg. because of having to weave round other runners. There was a mention in this months magazine that GPS's can overestimate distance.
Agree with Brian J, it is only spot on 10 miles if you start at the front and take the best lines (shortest).
I was way back and it measured around 10.1 which seems about right.
All runners should have been aware it was a relatively big event (e.g over 1,000 starters). If you want to get nearer the exact distance select a small race with less runners?
I set off very near the front and ran a pretty aggressive line round the corners and Garmin just was a bit out on most miles, about 0.05 or so,so not far. I don't think I could have run any shorter distance though,
Last mile was longer because of getting lost. I'd guess that they measured the course around the shortest possible route, which is better than leaving the possibility for people to cut corners and run under distance.
Garmins and other GPS's are not 100% accurate I agree. And teh odd bit here and there is no matter - just found it slightly odd that so many had 10.14/15 as distance - guess its one of those flukes of statistics.
Had a great day yesterday anyway and well done once again to the organisers.
Just dowloaded yesterday's run, using Hollybar, onto Fetch and it recorded, 10:08. I can't complain at that. Also the start wasn't brilliant for a good signal.
I had a great race, really chuffed with my 1:47 ish time, it wasn't even a PW. Comfortably sub 11-min. miling and apart from feeling a bit rough between 6 and 7 miles most of the race felt OK. I thought conditions were pretty good compared to what they looked like on Thursday. Warm, a bit of light drizzle and only a few windy bits. I was v. impressed with the chip system. No queues in the hall when I collected mine and someone to take it off you at the finish when you're too tired to bend down. Marshals were lovely as normal and the traffic was managed v. well. And great cakes too!
Only gripe was the cold water in the showers - brrr!
I now feel fully recovered from chest infection last year and back on track in training terms. Feel a lot more confident about getting round Rotterdam now.
Next race for me - Watford Half. I'm almost looking forward to the hills!
Pretty poor run for me just under 86 mins when I was sort of hoping for under 80Mins.
Mind you at least I finished unlike Mitts Sorry to hear about that Mitten, I reckon it was the early start that did for you !
In my case I did get a tight left calf on Wednesday in training and although I rested it until erace day it wasn't great. Plus my heel went into a pot-hole just before 6 miles which stretched the calf out suddenly even more and after that it really complained !!! Got round but not the best St Albans 10 for me by a long way.
Weather was OK. Very mild although just grey and horrible, plus pretty big puddles in places but not much anyone can do about that.
The start is still prety congested but not sure Striders can do much about that without moving a long way from HQ.
Thanks for the link, eggyrocks. Just realised that I wasn't the last home for my club. I just pipped a runner on the line with my impressive finishing sprint (well, slightly faster than normal shuffle!) and it turns she was from the same club but not wearing one of our vests. So it was definitely worth the extra effort, although part of me thinks it probably isn't good to be this competitive.
Not a big deal but are the times on that website gun times or chip times? Appear to be gun times to be but I might have lost 15 seconds somewhere? (it often happens!)

I agree that the conditions were good for running. I only felt the wind once and that was only a brief gust.
I also had the course at about 10.15.
Mmm - that's not great, is it? The extra 0.14M makes a fair difference to people's times! I thought the course was properly certified.

0.14m too long, 2 secs off a personal best, cheer up its just a run, which I thought we all did for fun.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, Aviator
Although when I'm actually running them I'll probably be hating them again!

Results can be found here http://www.triathlonnemesis.com/rts.aspx?timerid=2
I did 73 mins which I was pretty dissapointed with but had a massive stitch at 7.5 miles which stayed till 9.5 which lost me at least 2 odd mins.
Will be aiming for sub 95 for Watford half still.
