Sorry!, you're not at all having a blonde day Karen!! - I should've said! I work in minutes not miles - my poor old lady brain (and old lady legs) can't do the run 5 miles walk 1
I have tried lots of variations on the walk run theme and settled with this one - mostly because it's one that I've seen lots of other runners use and so can often find other runners to run alongside - the marathon distance is a long one and it's amazing how many different people you might end up spending time with along the way!
The key is to try it out and find what's good for you and then to try it out on a few longer runs - same with everything to do with this marathon malarky
Ah ha!! I have been doing run 10 mins, walk 1 min to date on my long runs - 13 miles is the longest I have run so far which has worked well. I just hope I can keep it up for 26.2!!
I originally tried run 25, walk 5, but as time went on the 25 felt so long and I cooled down too much on the 5 minute walk so I tried the 5:1 that an experienced pacer was doing (can't remember which race though! - old lady brain again!) and it seems to work so far... though, my fitness is really poor this time around thanks to rubbish knees!!
LOL, you get some awful looks when you start walking at 5 minutes in though!! This year I'm considering putting a sarcastic comment on the back of my shirt (any ideas anyone?)
I remember when I did run-walk in 2002. I started my first walk session and I heard one runner say to another "why is he walking already"...grrrrrr....
Hope it's ok to join this thread....... God I wish I had found this weeks ago!!
Am also attempting London this year for the first time (after numerous rejections!) and for one reason or another, my training has not gone to plan - I am only at the 8/9 mile stage in 1.5 hours as my long weekly run, with about three 5/6 milers on other days.
Am interested in this run a few, walk 1 malarky that you are all talking about as it's obviously the way forward, and seems right up my street as a 'just want to get round' runner.
I haven't gone back through all the pages to see if anyone has actually run a full marathon in this way - but is it possible???? what kind of finishing time are you looking at??
It's nice to know I'm not the only one having a stress about it all!!
I managed to get up to 5 miles yesterday in just about an hour with a 3 min walk and a cpl of one min walks. Run walk def going to be the way to get around but not sure if i should be doing this formally now or just getting miles in my legs as much as i can.
ps - just found out I'm going to Lisbonon Thursday for 4 day Get a couple of "Warm weather" runs in while I'm there
does anyone know what rate thw walk/run pacer goes at at Silverstone. !2 min miles is prob a bit fast overall for me but maybe the run/walk is the way to go.
last run/walk I came in at 5 hours 11, (thats not the year Paul and I crossed the line as giant Pink Lady apples), I'd love sub 5 this year - but sub 5.30 would be fab
I'm also hoping to beat 5 hours this year, though realistically will also be happy with 5 30! Just trying to get my enthusiasm up for an evening run. Struggling a bit recently to get going....
Hope you've all had a good week. I managed to get out for 10 miles this morning in the sunshine, before the rain returned, and it's now hammering it down. Feels good to be inside
I've been reading your comments about the run/walk and then walk/walk idea. I'll probably do run/walk, but in a slightly different way - run the first half of the race and walk the second!!!
I know I def won't run the whole thing, but it's beating the distance that matters - not how quickly.

I'm OK thanks, yes doing it again in the nurse....must be bloody mad....
How are you...
Hi Ellen - welcome to the forum of course you can join
I am hoping for sub 5 hours!! What about you?
Hi Karen,
Anything under 6 hours will do me!! 5 would be great, but I am not going to pin my hopes on anything as I just want to finish it!
I will see how my longer runs go with the run/walk and then I guess I will be able to judge the time better.
Can't wait to be honest!!
I think I did run 5 walk 5 (minutes) previously. Hope to run 20 walk 6 ish this year (miles)

Hi Andy.
Lucky you! Got out at 7am this morning for a 13 miler - the rain lashed down from about 5 miles out so I got back like a drowned rat.
Felt great getting back and stepping into a hot shower, hot breakfast and then I dropped off for an hour!
Did 18 mile last week and have a scheduled 20 this coming Sunday. As you say, matters not what time we do its all about getting around!
