WELSH RUNNERS!!!

Sadly, there is good NHS and bad NHS when to comes to sports injuries...

Bad NHS as Daymion points out.  Seems like many of us have had similar advice from GPs and non-specialists - often insulting in my case ("Don't you think you are too old to run", "Take painkillers", "Then don't run" etc etc) - or just wrong ("Nothing can be done", which I then get done by going Private...).

But also good NHS once, and if  (and this is the key prerequisite here...) you can get referred to see the right person (a specialist) or indeed are lucky enough to find a GP who is more appreciative of the benefits of exercise (such people do exist!). Have you been referred to a specialist Hannike ?  You'll recall my runner partner suffered what sounded like a similar injury at the OMM - he's now well and truly recovered and is running better than ever before.

Have you had it scanned ?  If it is left I guess scar tissure etc could build up and make the problem worse with time. Time and rest is not always a good thing. Having partially torn my achiles many years ago I took the advice of my GP and left it alone, resting, for at least 6 months but to no effect. I blagged a referral and then saw an orthopod at UHW who was so helpful and encouraging - one scan and three agonising (ie good !) physio sessions later I was as right as rain.  Still run like rubbish, but injury one less excuse !  Hope it gets sorted..

Hope we're all enjoying the slush !!

Thanks guys! I do have a supportive GP who actually kept track of my fell racing achievements last season and sent me for an x-ray when I asked for it for both shoulder and ankle. I have been doing my own treatment so far, as I am a yoga therapist, and have take advice from a physio friend as well and bought a wobble board which I have also used for my re-hab. I can run on it all right, but I can't descend without some serious shooting pains up the outside of my fibula... When I looked at the x-rays with the radiologist, I could not spot any fractures at the bottom of the fibula, which showed, but am starting to think that I may have had a fracture of it higher up, from the twisting movement of my leg...

Mind you, it does not seem to be getting worse, it aches badly for about 2-3 kms, then settles with just a stiffish ankle. I can run 4 kms or 20 on it without it making a difference. I just cannot descend for toffee image and it has made me slow off road image

Maybe I should just be patient, torn ligaments can take up to 18 months to heal...

Have been emailed by bupa Wales run people and it looks like this years race has been cancelled image

Can't believe the Welsh contingent are so quiet with the Rugby going on! The celebration booze is playing havoc with my training. Hangovers and LSR's don't really go.

hic, it's a tough balancing act  image.

I did enjoy doing the cardiff love run the morning of the Wales Eng match, seeing the prematch buzz and then heading home and getting well n truely plastered.

Attention ;The other Clarbeston Rd plodder,

    Safety Safety request!!!

If you happen to come across this thread & my post please please get yourself some lights & fluorescent clothing my friend or I fear you will not be long of this earth.

I have nearly flattened you twice with my 4 x 4 in the last couple of weeks while out around or lovely lanes during the hours of darkness.

While having a pint last night,I over heard someone else commenting much the same.

A very dark red jacket & black tights are not the most sensible attire after dark.

    Yours Sincerely,

    A concerned fellow plodder

P.S I will blast my horn next time assuming I see you  image

They might not be a member on here, don't bother with the horn just run them over that would be the best way of getting their attention

I very nearly didn't have to bother with the horn on several occasions.

No common sense or he just has a death wish?

I'd stop and talk to him BRT - don't want to give 4x4 drivers a bad reputation by crushing him !

Some fine things happening this weekend..

     - Tomorrow's anniversary running of the free (weekly) 5k Cardiff Park Run race

    - The fast/flat Ponty Rodents Reverse 10m Sunday am

    any forumites doing ??

Hi OFT. Off to treforest on Sunday for the reverse. Looking at it as a tempo run for the marathon training, as too lazy to do hard work on my own.

    Anybody else out to play?

Just training this weekend - easy 6m tomorrow and LSR of 12m on Sunday. Cardiff 10k next Sunday (Dydd Dewi Sant). Good luck Daymion, OFT (are you running Cardiff 5 or Ponty?), and anyone else competing this weekend. Hwyl!

    Ponty 10m

Like daymion, it was suppose to be a marathon (FLM) temp run - such is the state of my training though, I suspect it will have more of a long run feel !

  • Options
    Good luck with it OFT!image

How did it go OFT? That wind coming back on the home stretch from Taffs Wells was interesting! Hit my target so quite pleased. First time I've done it (I'm still new to racing), and I thought it was a good local race.

Glad you enjoyed daymion - it's a great little race the Ponty 10, organised by runners and a fine club for runners etc. The marshalls did good work to keep the course clear and motorists at bay (not easy..)

I like the white basball hat (useful for FLM if the sun shines) but had a shocker of a race and was trashed by the wind. Very tempted to pop on the train at Taffs Wells. Not helped by a niggle, unfitness, lack of ability etc etc. Two minutes down on my 7 min/mile target time and 8 mins off the PB set on the same course set not so very long ago.  Groan.  Gloucester 20 next week - it going to very, very grim....  I'm a great fan of "positive negative mental thinking" !

There were some very fast runners out yesterday - eg Martin Rees who just failed to break his world vet age category record (unlucky with the weather).  What a guy...

They did amazingly with the traffic, but I almost got knocked down at the finish line by a very confused lady who looked like she was turning up for her sunday lunch at the pub. I did it in 1hr 12min 58 so must have been just behind you.

That Martin Rees is amazing. I was watching him coming the other way and he was flying. He works with my next door neighbour and he was saying that as he came to running late he's just getting better and better. Did he catch the 'youngster' who was in the lead at about mile 8?

  • Options

The youngster you mentioned is I think Richard Gardiner.  The results are up on the les croups site. And no doubt on the Ponty Rodents site.  Funny how results always appear quicky on the web when you've run a stinker..

I also almost got knocked over by a car at the finish - this may have been personal though (it was a work colleague !)

PS I want  be Martin Rees when I grow up.  By the looks of it he ran much of the race alone - the WR would have surely gone had there been others to share the work. Respect...

Hello fellwo welshies. I'm Welsh and recently a runner, but I currently live in Newcastle.

I'm sure the runs in Wales are a lot more scenic than what I'm used to though, buildings, cars, dogs and kids in tracksuits hanging about the park.

I think we've got our fair share of Chavs done here as well Rodduz.! But certainly blessed with lots of nice countryside as well. I did an 18 mile run yesterday in Margam forest and down to the beach and it did cross my mind that I would hate to have to do that length run in an urban environment.

I'm sure there's nice bits of coast and hills if you get out of town up there as well?

  • Options

There are some stunning scenary up around the north east, take a drive out to the coast & do some plods there.

Running my the sea is great for lungs & the soul image

yeah, I'm sure there are some nice spots. But unfortunately I don't drive and am currently living fairly close to town. I suppose I could get myself down to Jesmond Dene for a run though.

Next half decent weather day I shall do that. Dor now, it's my usual laps of the local park!

I bet margam was a great run. I'm from the Rhondda, and walking the dog up the mountain is awesome in itself, add in a bit of running whilst doing it... very enjoyable.

One of my personal faves at the moment is along the cycle path that runs from Llanelli to Tumble. As it used to be the old Cynheidre colliery train line, it's a fairly gradual gradient all the way. Often run the part from above Swiss Valley reservoir to Tumble and back as my long run, about 15.5miles round trip. Rural, scenic and traffic- free (except for bikes)!!image

Another holiday favourite is from Capel Curig to Llanberis via Llanberis pass, between Snowdon range on one side and the Glyders on the other - very special, but best avoided during peak holiday period due to huge volume of cars driving far too quickly- obviously seen The Italian Job a few too many times!!image

That's part of the snowdonia marathon route JD. Fancy giving it a go?

My favourite run/walk is in the brecon beacons. Starting at the nedd reservoir, up the Roman road, over the peaks and then down by the horseshoe.
Closely followed by Newton beach to omore river, up through the methyr mawr sand dunes and back around through tythegaton woods. Wonderful variety of scenery.

Hi folks- I'm in Mid-Wales (by Rhayader in Powys). Just joined my local club & enjoyed views previously only seen on postcards of Elan Valley.

Love comparing  reports on 'my last run' thread as I often see no other joggers, cars or sunshine but do see plenty of red kites, tractors & rain......
