Yo Paddy, thanks man for offer over Phoenix Park 1/2 - appreciate. Not going to be in Dub this wkend after all, so that's that sorted. Yeah, in terms of long ones, have done 3 x 20 (1st one: 3hrs, 2nd one:2.45 & 3rd one: 2.27, & 3 x 18.3 - these 18.3 ones focused on the inclines of Howth) so had thought that'd be that for LSRs, but yeah, on reflection, you're right: I'll throw in another 20 at least to the mix). WIth a sub one-hour 10-mile time, you must be on for something real quick this weekend in the half? what you thinking?

Kattiecom, good one in the trail marathon - want to do one of those myself some time.
And K.P, good one in Robin Hood marathon.

Jeez, marathons as rehearsals, good stuff...

Wind & rain forecast for the week & then the first of Autumn's frost is expected at the weekend...sure what the hell? running in the cold is a buzz...

Sarah-really admire you for your determination and grit. You'll surprise yourself with your time, I bet.
GFB: how dare they treat you like that! You had your plan and it worked fine on the day so that's a fantastic race-I hope you are proud of yourself!

KP, I do my long runs att 11minute miles, I did a 10 mile at 9.00 Minute miles the other week and I hope to run Dublin at 10 minute miles, I run 5.8 miles 4 to 5 times a week at lunchtime and vary between 51minutes and 62 depending how tired my legs are from previous runs. I did 2:11 at the half way split at Newry and felt good up to 16 mile but then I just seemed to run out of energy. It was the first time I had used Gels and I normally don't need to take on much liquid ( 1 Lucozade sport at halfway and another after finishing with my 20m LSR this week) but at Newry I could not get enough water down me for some reason, I was taking two bottles at a time in the second half of the run at every 3 mile station and drank 3 or 4 at the finish whih is not like me. The Athlone 3/4 should give an indication of where I am I suppose, I am aiming for below 3:20

Adog, hoping for a good run saturday. Ran 80 minutes in National half last week on a bitch of a course so hopefully a good run on Saturday. Alas, i've pulled a muscle in the arse area and am hoping that it'll be ok for Saturday. A bit better today though - will try a gentle jog later. TBH i think i've made it worse by overstretching!. Optimistically though the rest might do me good. I've had a good run of training up till now so am looking at this week as a really easy week and forgetting about the mara until next week!.

Hi sarah watson 18. Yep, definitley no problem walking the event. I was injured 2 years ago and so saw the race from a spectators perspective for the first time. There were lots of people walking, at least 60 or 70 I'd guess. Just line up with the walkers at the start and you'll be fine. Enjoy!

Paddy and Linda..thank you so much.

Still not 100% decided as depends on how training goes. As I say, am pretty fit but the old leg and foot need to get used to the idea! Did 10 miles quickly and comfortably last weekend and so far all is well. I certainly won't have all the miles under my belt as when training to run but figure I may just get away with it. if I can do one 20 before then I will go for it..Trouble is, walking just takes so much more time than running!

Thanks again, I appreciate your encouragement.

Sarah,

I'm on the injury couch meself at the moment - i wont bore you with the details but i'm hoping it'll be better in a few days - HM planned for Saturday.

Paddy - get well SOON!

Getting ready for the first stint of my Coaster run tomorrow - really looking forward to it - the amount of organisation, emails, messages, and texts it's involved is mind-boggling.

Irony of ironies, went on a works visit to Amazon warehouse yesterday - told to wear comfy shoes as it's the largest in Europe ...and consequently got the largest blisters on my heels - I've never had a single blister running and am now trying to manage with blister plasters, but how uncomfortable??? Not quite what I'd call an injury but cutting down my "performance" all the same.

Up to massive mileage for me this week - will do 65 by Saturday - nothing for you ultra bods but I'm 53 next week - so ok for a geriatric.

Paddy. Slainte - hope it mends asap...I'm not half the runner you are, but read some stuff on the net yonks back 'bout how Aussie army don't do stetches any longer as they figured they're more injury-inducing than injury-preventing when all is said & done...but when one's running your pace, they gotta be done I suppose...

got a slow 20-miler pencilled in for the weekend...just messed around today with a bit of speedplay in the wind...

I was wrong with my self diagnosis. Went to see the man who rubs yesterday and he attacked my rear area with 50mm needles and released several knots from my arse muscles. Much sorer after but seems to be a bit better now. I will try a light run later to see how things are. I'd say 60:40 for Saturday.
• Options
Paddy...let's hope the needles do the trick. If we both do make Dublin , at your speed you will probably have done that, recovered and done your next one by the time I finish !

ITB, nice to hear you will back this year. Taking the Vitamin G again this year?

Got my first black toe nail in Dingle a few weeks ago, makes me a real runner by all acounts. Waiting for it to fall off. Anybody know if it will be sore? Does it grow back as before?

Wally!

I have been doing a bit more of the exercise this year but I think it is about time I started taking Vitamin G again.

OK guys, just like last year, let's put our hopes where are miles are & check out after D-Day if we fulfilled our aims :

DREAM TIME BACK-UP TIME WHEELS-COME-OFF TIME

ADOG WOOF 3.15 3.20 3.27

Hey everyone, well judging by last weekends 3:57 and last years 3:53 at Dublin I'm going to say:

Dream Time - 3:50

Back-up time - sub:4

wheels come off: 4:20

Although having been in a downhill 30mph RTA this week on my bicycle (my robust helmet meant I luckily walked away with bruising, bleeding and whiplash) my training is slightly side lined for the meantime image

Also made the decision to step my 39 mile Causeway Ultra down to the marathon distance. 3 weeks between 3 marathons is dodgy enough without making one of them an Ultra!

What does vitamin G do????

Oh and Wally when my first toenail fell off it just felt a bit sensitive for a few days - a plaster around the senstiive bit of your toe should sort it. My toenail grew back much thicker (and much ulgier!). Sandles are not a good look for long distance runners!

hello, hope all the injuries clear up... thought I'd knackered my left leg but it's working again now, had long physio session and pelvis put back in place. (makes me sound like I'm a robot)

Back-up time sub 4

Hi all,

I've had a manic week at work so not much training this week, managed some swimming and cycling but no running since Sunday. Still, I'm sure it won't do me too much harm and I'm hoping to get out this weekend. I was going to do the Tatton Park triathlon but you have to rack your bike on Saturday, which is a big problem for me this weekend and there's a lot of waiting around due to transition closures on the day so I've just decided to cut my losses and go running instead!

Paddy, hope your muscle problems ease. Good luck and have fun on Saturday.

Jim, maybe it was just a bad day for you. I've never been able to take gels either, could never take enough water to use them properly and they caused me some stomach problems. Although, a cycling friend told me you can get gels that don't need water these days, so maybee I'll give those a go, but can't help thinking I'm comfortable with bars and lucozade so why change. Good luck at Athlone.

Katiie, sorry to hear about your crash, glad you've escaped relatively unharmed.

ffRAN - just been reading back and I don't think you can say 53 is geriatric! Well done on your high mileage week too, I've only topped 60 miles a week a few times, I found I get too many niggles when I tried to do that much regularly. Think cycling and swimming help though.

I might make a slight adjustment to my dream time following on from Robin Hood - maybe sub 3:59. Back up time 4:10. Wheels come off time 4:30.

I'm not 100% certain but I think Vitamin G will get you drunk, probably quite quickly if you drink it at the end of a marathon!

I've found gels tricky to take - can only take 1/2 a one at a time otherwise there's a whole different type of running going on! Jelly babies work pretty well for me though!!

21 miles today at 8:30 pace - pretty steady too not my usual too fast at the start too slow at the end s I'm pretty happy. Seems like everyone is nearly ready too - hopefully any injuries/niggles anyone has will clear up!

Dream time 03:43:45 Back up time sub 4 Wheels fall off 4:15

Thanks ffRAN and good luck with avoiding colds, I must start wiping down the desks at work (we hotdesk), ideally I'd have a big oxygen bubble type contraption rather like a space helmet but I might get odd looks. I did threaten to break the fingers of one my co-workers who 'affectionately' kicked my leg, must remember to write that all office memo 'keep your germs and selves in general, well away from me until after Oct 25th'
JeremyG looks like we are aiming for similar times I'll look out for you!

So it's not just me who wipes desks at work at this stage! Very reassuring. ( I also do the telephone receivers )

I am a teacher so a marathon at the end of a 7 week term is a little nerve-wracking in terms of the bugs I may be suffering from by then! Maybe I should start disinfecting the kids...?!

Did 22 miles at about 9:30 pace this morning and feel ok - fairly flat route but more than half of it along grassy canal tow-path, which always feels like hard work. I'm hoping that a taper combined with carbs and a good crowd will mean I can maintain that pace for 26.2! So... with that in mind, my times are:

Dream: sub 4.10
Back-up: 4.15
Wheels fall off: 4.30

First marathon so all guess work really!!

Hope injuries are on the mend for everyone.

Tangle....I visit ots of different schools so have the full range of bugs to avoid ! It's when I arrive at a school to find a line of kids sitting in the rreception area, each with their own bucket ! Grim grim grim...

Your 22 miles sound great , sounds as if you are well prepared. I'm aiming to walk this one having been recovering from a foot injury. Will join in the commitment to times once I see how my longest walk so far goes tomorrow. Taking part at all is my current dream time!

I seem to have picked up a bit of a bad back but it did not seem to be affecting my running - Just a 1/2 marathon today at MP of 10 minute Miles finished in 2:10:35 on my own in the pouring rain and did not feel like I had to stop. Added to that I was out last night and had 6 pints of Guiness in the pub. I have a LSR of 22 miles next weekend then the Athlone 3/4 the week after at MP.

Dream: 4.15
Back-up: 4.29
Wheels fall off: 4.53 (Newry Time after 2:11 split)

Quiet here!?
Due to the infamous & beloved Vitamin G, I never did get my pencilled-in 32k done. But I did do 22kms this morning & gave them welly (especially the last km or so): 1hr37.30. I hit the half-marathon mark at 1hr34 almost bang on. McMillan reckons a 3.18.15 is possible from that. We'll see. Five weeks to go. Any Phoenix Park results to report? You get it done OK Paddy?

Folks,

Running Berlin next week and then Dublin with my Dad in October. I ran last year too and loved running the "home marathon". Should be brilliant again this year!

Adog - Yeah - had a great run in the end. 1.18.20, which was 30odd secs off a 10 year old Pb and passed the ten mile mark in a shiny new pb time. Very happy with the run considering the build up. Its time now to target a time for the marathon. I will give a time soon - i have a dream target in my head but am afraid to go "public" at the moment. Nice run yesterday yourself BTW.

I'm sure no one is very interested in this snail story but I am quite proud of my 3 hour 55 minutes 15 miles walk this morning.

Recovering- from - injury foot and leg stood up well. Will I have the mental stamina for another two and a half hours? I am admiring marathon walkers and 6-7 hour runners more and more.

I'm happy though, feels good to be achieving something.
