Darren - Good to hear you're on the mend and should make it to the start line. Just be careful not to over do it so close to the race.

Every one seems to be doing well.  Now it's just 2 weeks of staying injury and germ free.

Legs are really tired tonight, was over the worst of the cold by Monday so done 20.5 miles in the wind and rain.  Have managed to do another 3 runs since then, all including hill, hills, hills.  Starting to wonder if I have done enough now, then the next problem will be trying to stick to the taper... will probably want to do a bt more but know I shouldn't.

Would love to finish in 4.20 but would be happy with 4.30.image

Thanks for the advice blisters and beer/.gramsland. Will refrain from pushing it on the 10k. Maybe it was a bad move running 22 miles the week before the Chippenham half too? Could that be the reason for my slow muscle recovery at the moment? Either way, I don't want to risk missing out on my first marathon due to self inflicted injury or fatigue. Gentle 18 miles in the morning then a well earned rest on Sunday. Then it will def be taper, taper, taper!

Decided on 15 miles yesterday and appear to be recovering well from my runs again!!! Heading up to Inverness on the 30th September so we can see the sights and have some well earned 'down time' before Sunday. If anyone else is getting to Inverness early that week and like the idea of a social get-together then please let me know. Would be nice to catch up with some of you, especially fellow first timers!

ANGIE good luck with your race, thats nice of you to run with your sisterimagehope you both have a good time

B LISTERS &BEER it was in london 2006 when i got 3hrs02.45,it all worked for me that day, back then i never chased the clock just ran marathons for enjoyment (how the hell can we call it fun )looking back if i chased a sub3 that day i may of acheived itimageever since i've tried for a sub 3 but all my times are getting slower cause i try so hard i keep blowing up after 20 miles were as b4 i just ran sensibley & got a much better time
i'm not sure what to make of loch ness could be a gamble with the weather,@ what mileage is this hill they keep mentioning & how steep & how far does it go onimage

no running today as i wanted to watch great north run ,i did that last year in 1hr25 so happy with that

    yesterday i did 10 miles 1hr09.21 ,9 miles @ marathon pace 6.45 if only i could 26 x that

15 miles for me today just inside target 10 min mile pace. Felt good apart from a few minor niggles - drizzle and wind probably made good prep for Loch Ness weather in October! That made 30 miles for this week after 40 the week before, planning on about 20 next week before winding right down.

Nice to see Haile win the Great North (and man u beating liverpool!). All in all a good day so far!

Good luck for the week ahead guys nearly there now!

Some great final preparations going on folks, well done. You're all a lot faster than me!!!

A bit of advice please -- the first part of Loch Ness has quite a bit of downhill....to what extent do you let gravity take over? When I train on some hills 1:12 is as steep as I've managed so far, I tend to let go a bit and my pace quickens (obviously!)....but I don't want to go off too fast at Loch Ness. Should I try to slow down at the beginning of the marathon (like all the advice says) or take advantage of a bit of gravity-assisted running?

ADO i'm thinking the same as you do i make use of the easy bit,but then will it ruin my raceimagei've worked out the time i'm hoping to achieve & worked out the ave pace so will try to stick to that, but also worried about the hill @ 18 miles will it eat into my ave pace to much, some one will let us know soon
  • Options
Ado - I work to HR (or perceived effort) so will take whatever advantage is offered by the downhill. I find that braking on the downhill puts a lot of strain on my knees/quads so it's better for me to just relax and let go. On a flat course I'd aim for even pacing but on a hilly one even effort will have to do.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Mate, its not really downhill to be fair. Theres several large up and down 'bumps' for want of a better term for the first few miles. After that it levels out. The downhill bits are only for a matter of yards if memory serves me right (done it twice). Wouldnt worry too much

Afternoon All. Looking like most are hitting their targets and all looking good for the race. I was up in Suffolk seeing family at the weekend and did a half. Now considering I'm looking to get under 4hr (My only previous mara was Stratford in April when I did 4hr 40m) I was very pleased with my run and haven't a clue where it came from as I did 1hr 44m 14s. Did the wife put something in my porridge or is it just that for the first time I've actually been following a plan?

Not sure though what state I'll be in at the start though as for various reasons we will now be driving up through the day on Saturday rather than Friday.......

If reality matched intention I'd know I was dreaming
  • Options

That's bad luck Chimney. We're driving up too. Have you thought about maybe ducking off the motorway a couple of times to stop in nice places for lunch etc? It may take longer overall but you'd likely be less stressed than sitting on motorways for hours on end and can stretch your legs properly.

Edit: Sorry, good work on your HM. Don't worry about where it came from, just take it!

    Cheers B&B.

We'll be stopping every couple of hours to let my training partners have a sniff and stretch their legs. My lovely wife has agreed to do all the driving as well which will help. Fair play to her. Where would we be without willing and supportive partners? image

    Hi guys.

went out tonight for usual 6 miler (1 m warm up, 4 @ threshold, 1 m warm down). haven't been out since 15 on Sunday which is a day's extra rest than usual (away last night and thought ok as tapering anyway), but the thing is it felt very weird! like running with someone elses legs!! comfortable enough just odd! wonder if this is just a sympton of tapering as i've forgotten what it feels like to let my legs fully recover!  anyone else having similar experiences or just me? image

    Afternoon.

Matt H. I was out last night for an easy 6 miler that felt very tough and all I could do to put one foot in front of the other getting so many twinge's from so many places. Out for an off road 5 miler this morning and felt I could have gone on for ever, go figure......

Started sneezing at work this morning, one nostril blocked, the other running way too freely. Great. image

If reality matched intention I'd know I was dreaming

Bit late in adding to the Forum, but nice to read your training stories. Wife & I have done all long runs now, just this weekend (8 Saturday plus 6 Sunday) a couple of 5 and 4 's around the local area in the wee, then Sleeper from London evening of Thursday 30th and a 3 mile toddle around Inverness on the Friday to get our bearings. Thanks for the nice stories and good luck everyone.

     Ian & Caroline.

Oops- weather forecast looked OK when I copied and pasted it- cool and bright, no rain, light breeze, 25% cloud cover.........................would be perfect!

Chimney- you'll be over your cold well in time- best to get it out the way at this stage.

Did a little tready race- pace session this am- trying to avoid getting drenched.

Will probably do about 10k at weekend, race pace again, then just a little jog next week to stop the legs seizing up.

Don't feel ready- seems AGES since I did a long run. AArrgghhhhhhh the taper demons are here!

Hope your forecast is right Tricia, sound good conditions.

Been a week now since i last ran, but it feels like forever. Physio again yesterday and he says knee is lot better than last week. Still not allowed to run on it and have to save myself for race day (lots of cycling going on instead). Thinks my ITB syndrome will flare up at some point but hopes it will be fairly far in before it does.

Running can be a lonely old game when training on your own like i have been, but thanks to everyone on here sharing their experiences and tips/advice i have felt more like part of a team.

So thanks everyone for all the shared experiences and i hope everyone has a great race.

     Best of luck folks,

     Colhun

No taper terrors for me as, having started training late and there being a couple of missed weeks, I'm not really resting until next week. Having said that, I've done my last long run. 16 miles on Tuesday with 10 at MP.

Colhun - I'm interested to know how has the physio worked out your ITB is better? Is it that bad that the band swells up significantly? I wish you the best of luck in getting through the marathon.

Chimney - As tricialitt says, better now than next week. Get well soon. Loads of vitamin C!

Good luck IC2. Enjoy your stay.

Blisters - He has been massaging it and says that the inflamation has reduced significantly from last week, probably due to not running he said. Definately doesn't feel as tight as last week, other than that i just have to take his word for it.
