No tri presents for me so far but I will be getting a new wetsuit in the new year. Oh actually I got a Dryrobe as an early present. Got some cash that might go towards race entries or something, other than that it was booze (Sailor Jerry, so fits the pirate theme) some Lego (a pirate ship...) and some Warhammer stuff, because yes I am still a child.

Ran at parkrun for the first time in ages yesterday, but as tailrunner so it was a slow one. Went out for a 3 mile run this morning as well.

Lollipop, I got 920xt as well also got a new helmet with the lights built in with indicators and flashing stop light and a Go-pro camera.

I am now officially entered in the western Australia 70.3 Ironman next December with my son in law Horse.

    19 days now Mallow!

Razor that helmet sounds great - and the race!

I went to the lake dip this morning.  It was lots of fun.  Not a swim, just loads of people in shorts and bikinis (and one in a mankini!) running into a freezing cold lake in the hail, lots of shrieking and bobbing around and running back out again!  I did go back in a second time and did a tiny swim from the end of the jetty back to the edge just to test my garmin, but my feet were blue when I got out so left it at that.  Great fun, but sooooooo cold!

Lovely rest of the day visiting family and back home again now.  Just writing out a training plan.

    Happy New Year!

What are your aims for this year?

Me - Outlaw Half, outlaw run, get eldest through his GCSEs and try not to be grumpy with the kids (at home or school)

It is the last bit that I am worried about...

    Happy new year everyone.

Got out for a little jog earlier to kick the year off...

Plans are to not die at Country to Capital, somewhere around 7 hours for Grafman half, sub 15 for Lakesman, again not die at Brutal, try to run at Equinox the following week, and get sub 25 at my local parkrun.

Failing all that lot, get drunk and fatter.

    Happy New Year!

Plans for this year are to haul myself around the Wirral Way Half marathon on Sunday, stay upright on my bike long enough to finish the Wiggle Along the Border 62 mile bike ride in March, and to try not to die at Outlaw Half.  Haven't made any plans past that just in case...

Good luck with the GCSE stress Maths!  My eldest is going to high school this year so I've still got a few years of denial before we get there.

Feeling very pleased with myself today - I fixed my bike all by myself for the first time ever!

When anything has gone wrong with it in the past I've got someone else to fix it, or just ignored the problem and hoped it would resolve itself. image  But my brakes have been getting stuck on for ages and it's making riding really hard (duh!) so I decided to get a grip and learn how to do it myself.  Watched a couple of youtube videos, ignored lots of complicated words I didn't understand (it's like cyclists have a whole other language!) and 10 minutes later it's fixed!

It was actually really simple and I'm kicking myself that I haven't done it before now.  I'll definitely have a go next time anything goes wrong with it. image

    yay, well done lollipop!

Awesome stuff lollipop, well worth learning how to do as much as you can!

Went out for a short ride yesterday down to Evans Cycles to grab a bell for my cyclocross bike as I'll be riding a lot along the canal. Rode down there along the bit of canal I don't use for my runs and rides, and decided never to bother using that bit again. One short section that has been done up and looks lovely, followed by 4 miles of misery, litter, broken glass and so on. Got a puncture after riding over a thorn, so sorted that out. Picked up my new bell and decided to head back on the main road, which was a lovely intro back into riding in a city like Manchester, with at least 7 people trying to kill. And it pissed it down.

And Country to Capital is next Saturday. In fact, with a bit of luck, by this time next week, I'll have finished. Or be dead and my suffering will be over. Either's fine.

Good luck for tomorrow Puffy! Hope it all goes well and you live to see the end of it!

I did the Wirral Way half marathon on Sunday with my sister and her friend.  It's all off road along an old railway route.  I run there quite a lot so wasn't sure how exciting it would be but it was actually really nice.  Lovely and flat, great medal and t-shirt and a free hog roast at the end - what more could you want?!  Unfortunately I had quite a lot of pain in my pelvis (an old injury from when I had my kids) and walk/ran a lot towards the end and been hobbling since!  Need to sort that out.

Today I'm swimming and looking at turbo trainers as it's far too windy around here just lately.  Any recommendations?

  • Options

well done lollipop! Might be worth seeing a physio about your pelvis if you can afford it

My first turbo was an elite elastogel thing, served me well for four years till I recently upgraded to a smart turbo (kickr snap) - whole world of difference but different price tag too. It is worth looking here https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/10/annual-winter-2016-2017-bike-smart-trainer-recommendations.html  for recommendations

Thanks for that Maths, will have a good look in a minute.

Went out on a group bike ride this morning.  Was not very enthusiastic about going when I was getting ready and it was dark and hailing, but I really enjoyed it.  Did 18 miles in the end and it was interesting to ride in a group. And we all went for (second) breakfast at the end which makes it all worth it!  Was a bit windy along the prom though!

  • Options

wow, well done, I haven't really plucked up the courage to go on group rides or approach a cycling club at all!

  • Options

I wouldn't either!  This one is really good though, its the Breeze/Let's ride thing and they usually just pootle along the prom to a cafe and back having a bit of a chat along the way.  But they've just made another group for people who want to do the Wirral bikeathon in June which is 28 miles.  They've started at 10 miles (I cycled there and back too which added the extra) and they just go about 10mph, helping people to get used to using gears properly and get confidence in riding on the road and in a group, then they'll up the miles a bit each week.

I'd love to be able to keep up with a 'proper' cycling club, but I'm not there yet and this is a great transition.

  • Options

    oh that sounds really good!

  • Options

Well that didn't go well. Pulled out at 17 miles with issues with my quads. Just my right leg. Pissed off, but it's one of those things. Manchester Marathon in 11 weeks to focus on now, so onwards and upwards. Going to go back to CTC next year a wiser, lighter and fitter man.

  • Options

Oh no, how disappointing for you. image  Hopefully it'll be better for the Manchester Marathon.  Great idea to go and attack it again next year, it'll feel even better when you finally get over that finish line.

17 miles is still a great achievement though, so well done!

  • Options

Exciting times for me today, I swam in the laned off bit at the pool for the first time!  I've never really felt like a 'proper' enough swimmer before (and I often swim in a different pool that doesn't do it) but the pool was really busy today and there was only a couple of people in the 'fast' lane and only one of them was swimming faster than me so I went for it.  It was actually not as scary as I thought it would be (not sure what I was expecting to happen!) and by the end there was just me and one other woman who I managed to keep at the same speed as.

Very exciting! I'm still slow, but I knocked 10 minutes off my mile time today which perhaps shows I just need a bit of competition.  image

    How's the leg Puffy?

    yay, well done lollipop!

Good stuff Lollipop, always good to make that step forward and face something scary.

My leg is now, annoyingly, fine. Going to give it a gentle test on the treadmill tomorrow, and if it's alright get back into training next week. It was a bit stiff and sore on Sunday, but no trouble since which then left me thinking it wasn't as bad as I thought, could have carried on etc. Which is bollocks, but there we go.
  • Options

Oh how annoying!  I'm sure you know you did the right thing though by stopping.  If you'd carried on you could have done some serious damage, hopefully you've avoided that by being sensible.

  • Options

Well I went to the gym today just to do half an hour or so on the treadmill to see how the leg would hold up. Decided on treadmill as didn't want to go out and end up a mile or more from home with a knackered leg. 3 miles done in 33 minutes, alternating between a nice steady 12 minute mile and slightly quicker 10 minute mile pace every 5 minutes. Pushed it a bit further towards the end too, doing a couple of minutes at 8 minute mile pace just to see if any issues were going to come about. But everything held, the legs felt fine.

So next week back into training properly. Next goal is the Manchester Marathon at the start of April, then I've got a sprint and half iron in May to look forward to!
