    Hi Chilibean
I don't tend to practice it on anything less than 22ish. For the very simple reason that I get a bit bored on my long runs and just want to get them done! I'll do one full "dress rehearsal" of 25 or 26 in the gear I plan to wear & a full pack etc. I have never trained beyond 4 hours and genuinely don't feel i would have anything to gain from it. I'm no expert I can only tell you what has worked for me before.
My philosophy is if I'm moving forwards, I'm getting there and that's good enough!
    Hope that helps
    V

mooks, thats good advice...i have often thought of wehter its benficial to do over 26 for ultras or just adopt the theory that if you can get that far its just a matter of fuel and water to provide energy to keep you chugging to the end...image

    Hi all

having upped my mileage in the last few weeks( i am doing the druids challenge fri/sat and sunday) i just go out and run as far as i can and if i dont do much i dont beat myself up about it .Did 33.5 miles 3 saturdays ago ,and tried to do the same again the week after but only did 28 miles but wasnt worried. today i really struggled to do 12 when i wanted to do 18 but what the hell you can only do what you can.

So, does anyone do the kind of mileage in the training plans?

Mooks what does your top mileage week look like (honestly as opposed to what the plans says you should do? image) And what is the longest Ultra you've done?

I'm wondering where to find enough hours in the day to do this training. And although I run my local streets in the dark, I obviously can't take off through the local country park on my own at night. If I do 4/ 5 hours followed by a couple of hours the next day for several weeks will that get me round this TT50 on a run/walk basis?

  • Options
Chilibean - I reckon you'll be fine with that. I've done a couple of Ultras (Country 2 Capital and TT) and my longest training run beforehand was 26 miles.

Running in the dark is great if you get yourself a head torch, but I guess it depends on how safe the area you're running through is.

I should mention that Go Beyond cut off times are pretty porous.

This year they were handing out finishing medals an hour after the final cut off.

    Hey busy thread recently!

On the "ultra" v "mara" training technique - personally I have been making myself walk up the hills on the two back-to-back runs, as I figure on day 1 the plan is to be able to finish day 2, and on day 2 I figure less fatigue after. Seems ok so far. Having said that bit of light weekend for me, as just managed a 2 hour yesterday and nowt today for various domestic reasons!

I was suprised last week though, as expected to feel really knackered after the 1.20/3hr back-to-back, but managed the 1 hour run after one rest day feeling fine - I guess the strength does start to build pretty quick.

On finding the time - I was thinking of running to work and back now and again (11 ish miles). Presumably 11+11 (2hr +2hr) would do as a 4 hour???

Chili - have you tried your local running club to find another crazy ultra person to run with???

On training levels and mileage I think its alot about whether you are hoping to complete the race, or do a good time. For Comrades two years ago, time became everything so the training reflected that - I did a 40 miler and several in the 30s as training - all went wrong on the day though, so there is no correct solution !!

I'm coming back from quite a long layoff so its a much easier traing regime and hoping for 9 - 10 hours. On the run /walk issue I think you need to start training that early - you need to get used to ryunning again after walking - I find that v v hard, and also need to avoid walking too fast - its supposed to be a rest !

NID...i have found a few ladies living near me who i hoped to train with but none of them do the same distance , also i find they dont really stick to any kind of consistent training. its hard when you have children etc..but ive been let down so many times by people who have said thy will run on  x,y,z time/day and then dont. i have decided that training alone is easier for most part, the company would be nice but its dificult to find a run partner whom you are matched well with. by myself i can just get on with it... or maybe its just that there arnt many crazy people like us lotimage.....

Man, that is so unfair, I got a right telling off for using the L-word, but nothing when DS says it. Slams door and sulks.

Rutland Marathon done yesterday... died on my @res towards the end. Ah well, always knew 4 weeks crash course training and a week taper is a bit naff.

As for TT training now, think i'll be trying a few 30+ training runs, plus a few back to back 20s to train on tired legs. Hopefully getting a weekly mileage up to 80+ again.

I think my longest training run for the 100k was no more than 33-34.

Does anyone know about checkpoints on the TT?

SB the website has some stuff on now as TH said, some detailed some not. I found this as well when trying to hunt down the route http://ultramagicforest.blogspot.com/2010/12/thames-trot-route.html

I'll do some more digging, let me know if you turn anything up, I plan on doing the later part (maybe from Pangbourne) inbetween xmas and NY to have a look.

The training dilemmas' sound familiar, I got back on track this wend with some easy miles after Snowdon, the plan is two back to back 12s next wend after a regular week, let's see!

hmmm two B2Bs of 12s doesnt sound too bad...image

That's what I'm hoping LB! image

Back to back 12s can form a useful part of your training plan, but I would suggest that you get some unbroken 20s in as well.

The key component of training for an event like this, is very long slow runs where you spend a lot of time on your feet continuously.  Then get up the next day and do another long run.

In this game it is the pit pony, not the thoroughbred, who is king!

....even i can manage 2 B2B 12s.....i thinkimage......and yes Ben i will be doing some of the lllooooooooooooooooonnggggggg ones too

Oh I'm up for those Ben, just easing in from the last marathon, B2B 15s the week after and 20s after that is the plan! Slowing down and throwing some walking in is going to be my big problem...
  • Options

The long runs can honestly be the fun part of training!

The biggest problem that most running coaches have, is getting people to run slowly enough on their long runs. I look forward to my slow 20 mile long runs through beautiful places, but dread my 6 mile tempo runs.

My boss, who is an elite 800 metre specialist, teases me about this mercilessly!

cheers for the info guys. 5CPs, 1 every 8 or 9 miles sounds ok to me, that will break it up into hopefully manageable chunks image

I'm hoping to get round in between 9-10hrs (i'm usually 3:30ish for a flat mara), so my thoughts were 2x 4:30hrs. I think slowing my pace accordingly is the tricky bit too def...

Ditto for me, SB, in regards to marathon times and predictions for the TT, maybe we should formulate a plan.

Hi Chilibean, Sorry my notifications have stopped so I assumed no-one had replied!

My longest mileage week will be 46 or possibly 52 depending on how I am feeling that will consist of:
    Mon - gym
    Tues - 4
    Wed - 6
    Thurs - 6
    Fri - gym
    Sat - 26
    Sun - 10
If I'm battered by then I'll usually ditch my Wed run and have a whole day off!
My longest (and only) Ultra was 50 miles with a bit of getting lost resulting in 51.4miles!
I reckon the important bit is the sat and sun long runs. I prefer a long one 18+ with a B2B 10.
    Hope that helps
    Like I said - I"M NO EXPERT!

Thanks Mooks image That's really helpful. Cos I reckon I can manage a week like that. I've only just upped to 5 runs per week but my three week days run are 5 miles each (1 woodland trail, 2 hills) and I'm looking to increase my two weekend runs up to 26/10 by 2nd week of Jan. If I do that for a couple of weeks before 2 weeks of taper I shall be happy.

Mmmm, looks like I might be meeting some of you at the start line after all image. Anyone planning to squeeze in just under the time limit? If so, I'll hopefully see you at the finish too.
