Reading was my first half two years ago and I got a PB last year so will probably have to do it again next year to check out the new course.
Of to NZ in the morning for three weeks - to include the Auckland marathon on 2/11. May or may not be able to log on while I'm away and will decide about Reading when I get back.
That's it, i've entered! Now to start training and practicing eating while on the run. There are so many good food stops on the route, starting with the Chippy on the Shinfield Road :-).
JJ It is gentle to start with. After the 1st mile is a sharp hill but not too long. it will be great going DOWN Kendrick Road this time! Shambler - you know it makes sense!
Shambler, Generally yes, but not as scenic although there is very good crowd support. On the new course there will be a sharp hill up after one mile, then gradually down to town (Kendrick will be a good long down hill. I can remember one more up hill from the Oxford Road, about 6 miles, then pretty flat to the finish. Andyp
yippee there are going to be loads of people there-I will be there even if not running as work organise the race-but here's my attempt at sub2hours. Ill try not to get injured the week before it this time?
by the way, for those who are having difficulties with the reading website, please go to http://www.readinghalfmarathon.co.uk as it is now up and running (pun intended)
Ran this one this year, enjoyed it despite the long delay at the start. I thought I'd give it another go next year.
Then I took a look at the new route. With the start a mile from the main baggage area, another lengthy delay is all but guaranteed while they wait for everyone to get there. Sure it'd be nice if all 7000 runners left plenty of time to drop off baggage and get to the start, but that isn't going to happen on a cold March morning on a new course.
It wasn't the runners, the organisors had not taken precautions against people in one of the well known rough areas where yobs were driving on the course. I have ran it the last 2 years and it has been a c**k up on both occasions. Hugh Brasher from Sweat shop even appologised after last year. As long as you dont mind standing in the freezing cold for up to 40 minutes with no idea of why the start is delayed and if you are not in the first 1/3 you will find all the sport drinks have gone some water stops have run out and that the space blankets at the end have run out. If you are a slow runner you will find that they will, without warning, open the course to traffic and crossing some of the roads will be extremely dangerous. I for one will be expressing myself by not doing this one again.
Think that criticism is a little over the top. And given how disgusting that sports drink was, it's a positive advantage if they run out before you get there!
There's always the Fleet Pre-London 1/2 Marathon as an extremely good alternative!!
OK, I'm a little bias as I'm a member of the club that organises this... but it really is a very good, well organised race.
It hasn't officially been launched yet, so no entry forms yet - but pretty sure that these will be available before Xmas (on-line entry provided too) - I think that next years date will be 21st March.
