I am not a huge fan of Farah, I find the mobot annoying like a poor mans lightning Bolt. However I think it's the BBC's propaganda about him being the greatest, especially Brendan Foster, that irks the most.

Actually thinking about it, the BBC's countdown clock to Bolt's and Mo#s races was the most annoying thing.

I don't think Mo can be considered the greatest on the track either, given his PBs are so far away from world records. As Spoon says, probably the best ever championship racer. It will be interesting to see if he can get near the top Africans. Agree with Westy that he's probably good for the UK record but not good enough to challenge the top times.

Those countdown clocks were annoying but when I think about those world champs the thing that sticks in my memory is the BBC commentators trying to argue medical issues with a doctor.

8.5 miles today with a bit of tempo running and a few hill sprints.

I'll have to disagree on Mo. Bearing in mind that 5,000m is distance: he is the greatest distance runner in terms of championship/olympic medals won. He has won at numerous Diamond Leagues too & has been more consistent than anyone else around. His ambition was always to win rather than to set WRs. For sure we could go back to Zapotek who won 5,000m, 10,000m & Marathon Golds. Haile Gebrselassie would be a better candidate for greatest ever due to his extensive road running career and numerous WRs. We'll have to see what Mo does on the road before passing judgement.
I would have liked to see him take the race on more often a la Muir but his less exciting tactical racing paid greater dividends.
Just over 2M at lunchtime with the youngsters. Felt good to be running again although I think that was enough before making things worse again.

Yes, that interview with the Doctor was painful to watch.

Haile G was my favourite runner to watch but Bekele takes some beating and having run faster than anyone else, he'd get my vote. Probably my best experience of being at a sporting event was watching Mo win the 5,000 gold at the London Olympics, the noise was like nothing I've ever heard before.

we not including women in this?!?

I have always enjoyed watching Mo win his medals at championships, although any GB win was/is exciting. I agree though that to be called the greatest ever should include breaking records.

Happy birthday reg.... will go for a birthday run for you and a pint..

Depends whether you see 'greatness' in the physical power and mechanics of running the fastest times, or whether you want the thrill of competition... man against man, woman against woman.

For me, a man who is not capable of running world records, but who time and again bamboozles the opposition and wins basketfuls of gold medals...  I consider that to be greater than someone who can train metronomicly and knock out a few world records when away from the pressure of the world championship / Olympics.

    Who would you nominate Westy?
Paula for the marathon. Ayana seems to be pretty special on the track but it's early days.
  • Options
The problem with saying 'the greatest' from someone's medal haul is that it depends on the calibre of the opposition at the time. Would Mo have won so many if he had been racing Bekele or Haile at their peak?

    I agree with jooligan...
Haile Gebrselassie Is the greatest ever due to his numerous WRs. he was smashing his own WRs in multiple distances when no one could come close and is still setting masters records now (has broken 27 world records)
haile has much faster 5k, 10k half and marathon times than mo.

Paula for me. She even got married on the same day as me. Hopefully hers was more successful ?

Moving swiftly on, 8 miles with strides for me. Whose idea was it to start marathon training in December? Running in the dark... grrr

    Morning all.

Dont really see how anyone can knock Farah and what he has achieved on the track. Only time will tell whether he can reach the very top in the marathon but he certainly has all the tools! Mobot aside (very annoying) he is absoloute quality and records or no records he certainly knows how to win!

I love watching Wilson Kipsang run-very elegant upright style.

As for the women.....Paula all day long.

9 miles with a few strides this morning in the pissing rain and howling wind.....lovely!!

Certainly agreed that Brendan Foster’s constant MF eulogies are painful. That said, I always enjoy watching the exciting finishes to his races. I’m afraid, however, his involvement in the Oregon Project for such a long time is too suspicious for me. To be fair, Mo does hold a WR – that enormously well competed two mile indoor record.

Nice tempo and hills, HA. Take it easy, Jooligan – recover!

Whilst the ice has gone at home (Cheltenham), it has lingered in Worcester where I do the majority of my week day running. Managed to get out for a MLR yesterday afternoon that involved a few excursions onto verges to avoid the slippiest areas. 14M at 7:29s. Recovery planned for the next couple of days before a ‘long’ 16/17M on Sunday. Yet to decide whether I will do another faster finish, although won’t be able to coincide with parkrun which was a fantastic way of achieving that.

Last day of term today. Ho ho ho everyone.

I like Paula, I like the Dibaba sisters too, and Keitany.
    Shame about the drugs.
Not sure why so many don't like Mo Farah, seems a nice guy, has won GB a hec of a lot of medals, and is one of the few global sports stars this country has. He probably doesn't like the Mo-bot either, but it helps bring in the $$$ for him and his family. BBC is bound to be biased as it is about all GB athletes, Hamilton, Murray, England/GB rugby/football/cricket teams etc etc.

Slippery out there this morning here also, if like that tomorrow will have to bin/postpone my LT run.
Just 5mi easy this morning. Another day off work today.

    I like Mo!
Paula's marathon records are still impressive to this day.

Raining so skipped my run. Might go later. Not a hardened tortoise like the rest of you hares!

The BBC countdowns were a bit annoying… like all the other athletes/events were just filler until Bolt or Farah showed up. I quite like Mo and have always enjoyed watching his racing, although I find his associations with Salazar and Jama Aden troubling. I love Zátopek and his life was fascinating (I highly recommend his biography by Richard Askwith, “Today We Die a Little”), but his Olympic treble at 5/10/M, while very impressive, simply couldn’t be done these days as the events are more specialised now. Gebrselassie probably gets my vote too, best overall record in terms of medals, WRs, and variety of distances. Radcliffe stands out as the best woman.

As SQ says, the ice is being a bit stubborn here in Worcester, but this morning my usual five mile loop was mostly ice free, and I could use normal shoes for my recovery run. I’d love to get back to the canal, but suspect that’ll still be dodgy and I don’t fancy an impromptu cross training session in the water. Might be back to summer clothes next week though, high of 13º forecast on Wednesday!

Why are we limiting our discussions to marathons as the peak of distance running?
For the men Joss Naylor or Scott Jurek have both achieved incredible feats whilst Helene Diamantides has an impressive range of achievements to her name too.

Well Jools, in my case it's because I have never heard of them.

Christmas do last night and I got very drunk and didn't get in until 4:30. So probably as Tom was starting his run. Got up at 6:30 to do the nursery run and then ran 8.5 miles to work. I was hanging by lunchtime so I went into the upstairs shower/toilet and had a kip on the bench!

Westy I thought you were just doing easy runs until the start of the plan?

Impressive running on 2 hours sleep Reg. I have been known to have a power nap in my car at lunch time. I have always found it quite effective.

Come on FBT - get out there!

Enjoyable 6 mile jog in to work this morning in daylight. Tomorrow I have the first marathon pace run which I will be doing it to HR, if the ice lets me. Will be interesting to see what pace comes out.

Agree with Spoons, what Zatopek did couldn't be done these days. I've always been a big Mo fan - British athletics won't have someone like him for a long, long time.

Reg - surprised you didn't do your standard run home in shoes and a coat? Poor effort. Very impressive on the 2 hours sleep though.

I've got a 5km track race tomorrow (The 5km's of Christmas put on by my club). I'm in the 16:30-17:00 minute target race, which is the second fastest heat. Someone in the A race is going for sub 14:30 - ridiculous. Haven't done any intensity for 4 weeks, so really not sure what to expect - if I don't PB I won't be surprised but we'll see.

More importantly, after an hour or so's recovery, its the beer mile. Did it last year, and vowed never again. So, if I can get under last years time of 7:30 that'll be a result.

Then it's our club christmas party in the evening - not making many plans for Sunday.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Almost beer o'clock.

Well done for getting any run done today Reg-impressive!

Good luck with the 5k tomorrow Joe. Nice sandbagging as usual. A PB is looming I reckon followed by a very big night by the sounds of it.

Calling Beer O'Clock-a black IPA for me today (interesting and day 21 of the callender!)
    Cheers everyone  :)

Ramjet, I am...but I have moved the plan forward a few days, so have the LT on Saturday, MLR on Sunday, LR on Thursday....fits better into my life at moment.

I don't know much about Zapotek, and I know nothing about ultra athletes. I think Paula's records are dodgy..probably down to all that stuff taken for asthma that all these athlete apparently have.

Feel a bit crap today, wonder if I'm coming down with something. Hoping a beer or two helps.

Reg - very impressive. Enjoy it whilst you can because when you get to my age that sort of thing is impossible.

    Good luck tomorrow Joe.

Looking at forecast I think will be too icy on my preferred route for a LT run (canal path) tomorrow...so reckon I'll be moving it to Tuesday and will be just 9 or 10mi tomorrow. I know not very interesting for you, but I just had to tell someone.
