Mark 1 I meant to reply to your sensible post and got sidetracked with dodgy postings
I think everyone is different with regard to hydration, i did the Kingston 16 miler yesterday and had one small drink (well it would have been a big one but i threw it down my T shirt, it was very cold so never tried again, i just cant run and drink, and hate stopping!
I just used one of those energy gels at about 1 miles or so and flew after that, so in my mind it is the energy based drinks or gels that are ,more important and not just water (except on hot days of course!)

Maybe someone else can help with a sensible reply when we have got off of the chocolate body painting- I agree with Tara regarding milk or white, actually chocolate Nutella does the jiob very well indeed and is not as sickly as more expensive brands that are sold in more 'specialist' shops, the jar just needs to be warmed up in a bowl of hot water and you are ready to party!
  • Options
Mark that should read 11 miles not 1 mile!
  • Options
So you'r bringing the Nutella then Twisted? Make sure its a big jar so there's plenty to go round...
  • Options
    Twisted,

Thanks for the info, what do you reckon on the energy enchancing properties of this spreadable chocolate then? is there a training video available....
  • Options
    Now you're talking Mark 1.

How about it Twisted - do you have a training video?
  • Options
Not with my bod - people wouldn't watch it!!!
  • Options
Off home in 5 so nite nite all - sweet dreams (don't really need to say that with the discussions we've had today do I??)

    Good evenings to all.
  • Options
I leave the thread for a little while and you deteriorate totally!!!! I'm shocked (honest) and eat any kind of chocolate.

RHG - big, big congrats. Well done you, and well deserved.

Mark1 - I don't think there's any doubt that being dehydrated will adversely affect your performance. The fact that you'd finished your water by 7 miles shows that you can't have been too hydrated when you went out. Was it an early morning run? Had you mostly been drinking tea or coffee rather than water? Have you got a bit of a cold? I drink right up until the start of a race (but not half an hour before) and managed a whole bottle of water on the way round the GSR. If you're using the energy gels you need to remember to drink as they don't rehydrate too. Hope that helps.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • Options
Twisted - try a small camelbak if you can't drink while running - they're really good and the small ones (like Flash Flo) don't weight much more than the water (they're only about thirty odd quid I think too)

Mark - here's a pic of my bike. Do you ever m/bike to races? Do you get cramp afterwards?

poca - pic back to windswept tomorrow

I have to do my long run tonight but my kidneys are really sore - wonder if I'm risking injury running 13 miles in such a state?

    Off home now - G'night

oh dear, that's crap - it's meant to be an Aprilia RSV1000R Factory - bought it in May

    EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!

Thigh muscles protesting, sore, gone on holiday.
    Ouch!

Just came back from a 17K (10.;5 mile) run. Can't believe that I did it, the furthest I've ever run is 13 K and that was Thurs and Sat last week.
Badly bitten by running bug. Worst thing is... I quite enjoyed it, though my thighs didn't. Wasn't even out of breath.
Had a Lucozade gel about 8K into it. Slightly upset stomach but obviously did it's job. Never had one before so funny tummy not strange.
Any hints on training them not to ache so much?
Gonna have a bath but will need help too get out of it again, I think. Good that Mr Bunny is home.
And I thought 10K was absolutely impossible, just 1 1/2 months back.
BTW, plain chocolate is the best. (Someone has to stand up for it). Lots of iron so I count it as medicine!
    Ouch - I hurt...

Oooh I like that bike! Have recently had a ducati dealership set up on my road, walk past those beasts every day - yummmm!

Well done on your mammoth run Bunny! Am so jealous, yucky cold, can't wait to get back into running again, it's been 4 days since I hit the road, not good!

I did 10 miles a couple of Sundays back, only planned to do about 8 but got carried away running past all the bridges on the Thames and ended up at Blackfriars (home of the (in)famous London Social!). Lungs felt a bit battered at 8 miles but had a lucozade gel and powered home okay. Hoping to do the same distance this Sunday!

It's quite worrying when running becomes enjoyable isn't it!

Just got back from running wiv my club. Took the bull by the horns and joined the more challenging group tonight. Did combinations of 1 minute fast followed by short jog recovery. Managed to keep up (just) but still bringing up the rear. Did a sprint through the middle of the local town and was encouraged along by the usual obscenities proferred by the bus shelter dwellers...Mind you they do make me run faster.
    Nice bike G
    Good run RB
Must admit to quite liking it too TTT but don't tell anyone.

still prefer the grizzled polar look, gungho.

Well done on the long run, runnybunny, tere's no stopping you now!
  • Options
    Gungho,
nice bike, no I drive (or get driven) to races (when i do them). LMH thanks for the input, I think too much coffee was to blame although I kind of feel that some kind of energy intake would have helped. Anyone suggest a good taper down to a half on Sunday? (other that do nothing!)

It was a quiet evening on here then, no Poca, have i scared her off?
Jeckmac I think a standard jar will be sufficient, it spreads very easily, and no mark 1 I do not yet have a training Video, though i like Jeckmac's idea of making one, after all we have a resident film professional in Gungho- so he can direct!
LMH what chocolate do you actually prefer, I must have a consensus on what flavour to bring!

Gungho- I am very wary of bikes, i have lost two mates to the male menopause of buying fast bikes and promptly killing themselves, less than 6 months apart!

Well done on the long run RB, all I can say is that the more often you do it the less they ache!, oh and massage really does help straight after a run if you have a suitable volunteer at hand.

I had another look at the Tough Guy site last night as i am sorely tempted, but it is madness, it just looks so tough who is actually doing it apart from the madwoman Poca?

Another early start, It is very dark at 5 15 now (and cold and damp) off to gym shortly

Mark1, I've found that the week before a half I do my last longish run on the Sunday then a short (4 miles or so) run on Tuesday and Thursday tops. Definitely have two whole days off before your race. Enjoy!
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Morning all. Wow Twisted you 'r an early riser...

Yet another post that I have to restrain my reply to!
Yes it is a long day! Mind you it is possible to get so much more done when you are in your office by 6.30.

I will try and refrain from corrupting the thread today, I don't want people getting the wrong idea about me :-)
But you lot do just make postings that beg a response.....
  • Options
Twisted - it's a common theme sadly. The phrase is grey-tops or born again bikers. The big problem (apart from the fact that they haven't ridden for years plus age slows the responses a little) is that blokes who return to or start biking later in life are able to afford the kind of bike they'd never get anywhere near as a young lad.
Imagine you last rode a 125 at 18 and then go and buy my bike 25 years later 'cos it looks pretty and you can afford it now!
Trouble is that your old 125 in the 70's would top out at a wobbly 50mph but this 1000cc in 2004 will manage 180 if you're daft enough.

Still haven't done my long run (due last sunday) as my kidneys are still aching. The good news tho is that I haven't smoked since 5:30 on sunday morning (felt too rough to even think about it). Maybe this is how I can give up the evil fags - drink to the brink of kidney failure every time I start to feel ok again.

I'm reading a fantastic book on endurance training at the moment - it really makes you think about separating out the different trainng zones properly rather than just trying to run fast all the time.
SERIOUS training for endurance athletes (SERIOUS is an acronym rather than simply a crap over-dramatic title).
A mate of mine who does triathlon recomended it - it's very interesting.

How come it's so quiet this morning?
  • Options
Gungho- are you referring to me as a grey top! (sadly getting true though I am in no way losing it which is much worse methinks)

Are you going to help us make this 'training' video with the chocolate spread??

Yes it is quiet, no Poca to stir things up!
  • Options
not you mate - the born again biker

I do have a camera at home tho I'm not sure this is the direction I want my career to go in - think I need to see a script before committing to your film
  • Options
Not me to blame for this one! I am trying to be a reformed character! (not very successfully), it is actually all Jeckmac and LO Hump's suggestion!
I don't think they envisaged much script actually!!
  • Options
morning. looking forward to the gungho's next installment on wednesday.

went for my first run in a week as i've been resting my knee. knee was no better for the rest unfortunately. patella tendinitus i reckon. still managed 2 miles in the rain. firt time i've run in the cold windy rain. very nice and refreshing although i was pleased to have my gillet on otherwise i'd have been frozen.

well, booked into the physio. maybe they can work wonders and i'll be back running in a few days. i think they can strap it up.

    how's everyone's training going?
  • Options
Did you say quiet? Am on ward at the moment appearing to read v important document...Fraid have got a fair few Grey Tops here. Gh who wrote ur book?
    Twisted, no script, none needed.
  • Options
'ere - you baint be taking our names in vain be u??

I asked about body painting in all innocence I did - t'was you guys that degraded it by mentioning chocolate spread! :-) (tht's not to say that I don't like the idea though!!)

Is no one else going to do the reading half? i think it's a well known one.
  • Options
Twisted - excellent slope shoulder action (it weren't me guv)

jeckmac - can't remember who but it's on amazon if you search for "serious training" and costs about a tenner

Have you all read the eRunners World frontpage today? It's a forum supported way of getting ready for an ironman next year (that means swim two and a half miles, cycle over a hundred then run a marathon).
    Who fancies it?
If I can get some of you in (or at least pledge support and pampering) I fancy giving it a go - it's only like a baby adventure race after all!

It says it's for complete novices who've only ever done a half marathon - that sounds like us, does it not?
We can train together through the magic of technology (this forum or a web page or camera phones etc and actually meeting occasionally - scary).
And those of us who fall by the wayside during training can become groupies (sorry, I mean "support crew").

Maybe I'm having some kind of rush as my kidneys come back on line - is this a ridiculous idea?
Perhaps it's the emotional instability of not smoking for 3 days but it looks like a good challenge.

    Any takers?
