Anyone at Nene Valley 10 today? Had a good race (62min) except that I got pipped to the finish by a clubmate after a killer sprint finish....

Injured for 1st half of 2004. Getting back in shape. 1/2M coming up on Thursday - would be nice to see sub 1:27. After that I start the 18 week Pfitzinger/Douglas 70 mile/week program. Looking for another sub-3 in London.

Some familiar names from last year's sub 3 thread - hello again to Monique, Wardi etc. Not doing FLM 05 but still deciding on whether to do Paris. Finding the motivation hard to train again though, have got a 10K in 2 weeks' time so will see how that goes.
Good luck to everyone with their training.

Once again, I'm looking for a sub 3 at the FLM. I missed out on a sub 3 this year as I got really bad cramp at about 20 miles and had to limp it to the finish.

    Hi Monique,

Good to see you around again - I've changed my name as I've decided I dont like seeing it in print (I neer liked it much anyway!). I remember seeing you come past me during FLM 2004 at mile 18!

    Morning all..

Managed about 45 miles last week which was O.K. but mostly at a very slow pace. But I suppose it's just about building up the mileage at the mo.

Andre - What 10K is that? I'm doing the turkey trot this weekend and the way I've been running I'd just be glad to finish.

Monique - I'm doing my first tri a couple of weeks after london so I'm trying to fit in some swimming and biking around the running, but mostly I want to focus on the FLM. Do you have any top tips on training ?

Appears I'm the slowest one amoungst us for the Half, and I'm feeling more and more like an imposter each day.

Toucan - 15 miles more than me! I am doing the Bolsover 10K as it is a pretty quick course even though a little undulating and windy. Need to get some decent speed sessions under my belt and will hope that some of the fitness from Dublin still remains.

I thought I'd aim for a sub 3 hour, are there any other over 40's out there who have done no exercise for years think this is a good idea? I don't anymore but will try

Cheers Andre - just checked and unfortunatley it's full. Will do a long one instead.

Hi Patrick. You ask if it is a good idea to aim for a sub 3 hour Marathon if you are over 40?

If you are over 40, do not have a solid background in running and only have a few months or training before the Marathon then you are very unlikely to do a sub 3 hour unless you are extremely talented.

Unfortunately you don't really give enough information about yourself for anyone to give a meaningful answer. It is not really the right question either.

If you tell us what sort of running background you have and what training you are aiming to do, then someone will probably be able to give you an idea of what sort of timea you are realistically likely to achieve.

The time you are likely to do in a Marathon depends of far more than just what training plan you follow.

"A good idea" or not is not really the question you should be asking except that if you are not carefull, the amount of training you would have to do, and the stress it will put on your body also means that you could end up injured.

I am well over 40 myself, I have years of running behind me, although not so much in the past few years, have done a sub 3 hour marathon before, yet I am still not sure it is "wise" for me to try to train for sub 3 hours.

I was building up my milage fairly carefully, or so I thought, but have injured myself doing a track session that I judged was essential for me to get the pace I need to do sub 3 hours.
However, all my plans are on hold until my pulled hamstring clears up.

Was it a good idea for me to do the training I did?

thanks Don for your advice on aged new runners like me. Everyone on here looks like serious runners so perhaps I should find another site. I have never been a serious runner, but did run 2:57 in my first marathon 15 years ago and didnt really do much training, it all just went well on the day and I felt like I was flying, a great feeling. I haven't done any running for years, but have kept to a good fitness routine for 5 weeks, loosing the first of two stone that needs to go, and run on my own. Am trying to get some speed, distance is not a problem, but running sub 7 for over 5 miles seems impossible! I may move to 3:15 site or 3:30 site, but not just yet, I'll try for it at least

Hi Patrick. There is no problem with what you say. You obviously have some ability. The thing to do is get some good running going and see how it goes. I don't think that the training you need to do for 3, 3:15 or 3:30 is necessarily that different other than the speed you need to do to reach your final goal.

Just start the training and see how it goes. If you are not reaching the targets you think you need then you either need to relax your expectations a bit, or up the training if you can. Bearing in mind that too much, too fast, too soon can lead to injury! (Don't I know it).

I too was very sceptical that the speed I had could return. However as I put more miles in, the speed was coming back. The day I pulled my hamstring, I was pleasently surprised to find that I was doing 1:24s for 400m intervals. Unfortunately my hamstring seemed just as surprised!

I can't really say that I am a "serious" runner either, nor that I "expect" to do a sub 3 marathon again. However, I am fairly certain that with good training sub 3:15 would not be a problem. So my aim is sub 3. I run and always have done simply because I enjoy running. Giving myself goals, and hopefully reaching them can make it more enjoyable. I have a heavy work load so I have to fit the running in with other commitments. In fact I have only very recently joined a running club. Not to motivate myself to get running, I have not really had any problem there. It was so that I could do the track sessions with others. It is difficult to do good repetitions on your own.

Good luck, and let us know how its going.

Patrick/ Don - I'm 43 and ran sub-3 earlier this year. I started running at 37 and gradually built up over the years. First marathon in 2001 was 3:25, then 3:14 the following year and sub-3 after that.

In my case at least, and I think it's true for most runners, it takes time to reach your optimum level. The good thing about starting relatively late (age-wise) is that you can still improve your times as you hit the mid-40's...

    Anthony.
