swimsmooth.com is a brilliant site. I've not read back but would highly recommend getting some lessons if you are new to swimming as you need the feedback.
I've had a rubbish swim today <sulks> My gym membership has run out so had to go to the public pool which was packed and noisy. I'm beginning to sympathise with RC on lane hogging. I've been swimming either in a wettie or a very short pool for the last 3 or 4 weeks and found doing longer lengths without the wetsuit as an aid was difficult and like I've gone back 10 paces. My breathing was eratic and I'm back to swallowing water and getting out of puff.
But..........there is an absolutely gawjuss open air pool which I should have gone in rather than the crowded indoor one and its 67m long. I didn't go in cos it costs more than a lake swim at £5.60 but when I came out and saw only 3 people in doing lengths it would have been worth the extra £2 dosh. But the water is only 19 degrees (brrrrrrrr).
OW swimming last night in the surfer club's lake, by invitation so no fees and no public! swam up and down the lake a couple of times, Kathrin then had us do some in-water sprint starts, then all out of the water for a barbecue - great time had by all.
This swimming business is expensive Soupy! The open-air pool looks nice tho' ... and poor you having to go to the public pool. I am sick of it and glad to have the lake but that's only until September then back to the public pool
Sounds like a nice evening Wolfy - what's the weather like where you are at the moment? I lived in Osnabruk as a child and remember lovely warm summers and great OW swimming.
Splish splash... good tri club session tonight. The other residents of lane 6 are doing Antwerp Half IM in a few weeks so when we're supposed to be swimming at race pace it's all fairly steady
cool makes sense.. might be tempting just to hire one for the day of the race then i'll see how i go i guess.. do you definately need a wetsuit for a 400 metre distance swim in a lake
You can't hire tri suits.... are you sure you're not confusing tri suits and wet suits?
If you're asking about training in a wet suit... yes, do it at much as you can but I'd stick to open water as chlorine does nasty things to rubber and most swimming pools are too warm.
The rules on using a wetsuit are that if the temperature is below a certain point you have to wear one. If the temperature is above a certain point then you're not allowed to wear one. In between those points you can choose to wear one or not. I'll go and find the temperatures for you....
If you have a wetsuit then wear it whenever you train in OW. If you don't, and you're happy to race without one, then just swim in whatever you'll wear on race day. If you're going to hire or borrow one you should try and swim in it a couple of times before the race. Swimming wetsuits are very tight and can feel restrictive so you really want to get used to it before the race.
No, not at all. I've done it. It depends on how cold the water is.
TBH over 400m the advantage you get from a wetsuit can easily be lost in the time it takes to get it off, particularly if you're not used to swimming in it.
we use ours at OW swimming nearly always, apart from being used to wearing/swimming in it, it's also handy to practice getting it on and off. I'm pretty quick at shucking it off nowadays, my OH often has a problem getting his feet out, they're rather large.
cool good to know.. going to go check out the tooting bec lido tomorrow and see what thats like for a trial run.. might go and look at a second hand wetsuit in streatham too.. hard decision to make really with so much conflicting advice!
I did some timed stuff today and was rather chuffed with seeing an improvement in my speed. I don't really like those sprints cos they are hard work and I am a lazy mare but did some today. 25m I did in 24secs, 50m in 48secs and 100m in 1min 58secs.......so rather pleased that there has been an improvement in my speed since I got back to this swimming. I have knocked on 10secs for my 25m!

The temperatures depend on the distance. For distances up to 1500m they are.....
Below 14 degrees you have to wear a wet suit.
22 degress and above you're not allowed to wear one.
