Lots of sprints at tri club tonight - I'm quite tired. Tomorrow night OW at the surfers lake, and a barbie after! Kathrin says we're doing OW swim starts. Should be fun.

Now that's something I need to have a go at UIW......although raced OW, it's been relay and never had to do the mass start.  It's usually pretty quiet when I get in the lake which is rather pleasant.image

Saffers - not experienced fogging either.  Soup has Zogg Predators (not the same as mine tho) so you could ask her opinion too

In that case you need to enter another OW race.  Which one do you fancy?

LMAO......ooooh very funny! I am gonna stop reading that thread cos I wanna play too.image

My goggles fogged a bit on Saturday but not as bad as the mask version that I had before.   LOL at mass start intro. image  I'm trying not to read that thread either cos I'm at serious risk of a domestic nightmare after 23 happy years if I succumb to temptation. So its me and you sulking in the corner Saffers. image image

      ..........................until next year. image

Soup, I did mention the thread to hubby and the fact that Magna Carter had put me on the list.........I am now off the list as thought a divorce would be pending.....to which hubby replied.....it would have been close! image  2012 then for me.  A half next year!image

OI, I may, MAY, be on the 2012 Ship as I have noo bike now
  • Options
What noo bike do you have Schmunkee and what was wrong with your other bike.....twas a lovely bike I thought!
  • Options

It t'was an okay bike.  Noo bike is lovely.  Had it properly fitted.  It's a compact but they are putting a mountain bike cassette on it so my lowest gear would be the same as a triple.  I can go back to ordinary cassette when I am stronger on hills.

This is my new baby altho when you click on the photo it shows it as a triple image.

Dunno what to do with old bike, whether to sell it (won't get much for it) or give it to Jr Schmunks

I am keeping Barley tho image

This was the second choice, but I preferred the Scott because it was more purty, so they adjusted stems and seat posts etc til it fitted me.

    Lovely bike Schmunksimage

Wow nice bike Schmunkee- and a great idea with the mountain bike cassette to begin with and the option to go back.  Wish I'd have thought of that.   Right, Team Schmunks sets sail in 2012. image

    And guess what?

The brand name is Jr Schmunks middle name image.  It was fate.

I can't take credit for moutain bike cassette - they suggested it.  They wanted me to have the Lapierre as they felt it was the better fit but I didn't like the look of it.  So they did everything to make the Scott fit.

I guessed that I need to love it to want to go out on it, so I got the purty one.

Sounds like you had some good service there.  When I had the choice of 2 (Trek or Specialised) the girl who served me advised that I pick the one I liked the look of best because as you say, you need to lurve it.  So purty is good! When are we doing a bike ride after a swim? image

Nice bike schmunks, is it the same as Pea's?

I'm soooo chuffed, been for a little swimble tonight, and have finally broken the 8minute mark for 400m image

I've also decided to HTFU and do the full days OW coaching saturday, before the 1mile swim sunday... I figure in the long run, it will be more beneficial for the vit, even if I'm tired sunday and therefore don't get the time I would like.

Roll on my intensive swimming weekend image

    Hi there

    Can I join in?

Went for my first swim in 12yrs today.  Really good but my eyes were buggered by the chlorine.  Guess I have to get some goggles.  Any suggestions?

Welcome. Can't believe you went swimming without goggles! It's a very individual thing, some peeps like the swim masks, I personally go for Zoggs goggles. Blue Seventy are good too.

Last night's tri club swimming was hard.

    600m warmup.

    400m (fist drills)

    400m (normal 50m/sprint 50m)

    400m (normal/leg kicks/normal/leg kicks)

    cross-pool all out sprints (20m): 1st set - across the pool x 10. 2nd set - across and back x 10. 3rd set across and back twice x 10!

1000m: 200m each - crawl with PB breathe every 2nd & 3rd, w/o PB normal, with PB breathe 3/4,  w/o PB normal, with PB breathe 4/5

I didn't make all of the sprints, I'm not fast enough to keep up with the youngsters, so I missed out one here and there!

    Hi Paula image

Yes, get some goggles.  I can't recommend any as they're a personal thing.  What fits me may not fit you so try some.

morning all.. time i joined here i think.. signed up for my first tri and its on the 24th september in hever castle....

I've swam since i was a kid.. but not too sure about this swimming in a lake business.  I am worried about spotting and going off course.. is it difficult to see where you are going? any advice? Also dont really have a proper training plan for swimming.. just going in and knocking out lengths (and not that many at that) i'm up to about 800 metres.. the swim is only 400 but i reckon its much tougher in the lake!

any advice? is it worth going to a tri swimming sesison

The only difficult thing about swimming in a lake is sighting (and the other swimmers).  It's something you can practice in a pool so you don't need loads of time in a lake before the race, although having a couple of sessions to get used to it is a good idea.

There are three ways of sighting and it's up to you which one you use.

1 - After you've taken a breath don't turn your head straight back into the water.  Instead, as your arm comes over follow it with your head so you're looking forward.  Then stick your head back in the water.  This should happen quickly and with only your eyes above the water so you get a glimpse of what's ahead.

2 - Before you turn to breathe lift your head forwards so your eyes are just clear of the water.  Get a glimpse of what's ahead then quickly turn your head to breathe.

3 - Bob your head up quickly, see what's ahead then stick it back in the water.  Then turn to breathe.

It's a good idea to find something large to sight on.  Some races have big inflatable buoys but you can use a building on the shore, a large tree... anything at all.

great advice.. i did start practicing this this morning in the pool focusing on the clock.. i found that looking forward before turning to take a breath worked well on one side but not so well on the other.. is bilateral breathing the best idea?

Doing my first OW Tri next week. I usually do BS which I am absolutely fine with. But today in the pool I managed 100m FC without taking a break. Breakthrough !

So once I'm settled into the swim in the Tri I may try some FC. I can do it a bit in OW but it always feels awkward and like I'm just not moving !!

Thanks guys.  I plan to go again next Monday.  Haven't got a plan yet, still getting used to the water and all the new jargon that doing a new sport brings.

Can you recommend a book, magazine for beginners?
