Caledonian . . . I have found just the thing for you to wear under your kilt to prevent any chaffing, it's much better than Vasalene. It's called Chaffe Ease. I found it on the internet and was amazed how fast it arrived in the post with a free sample. I used it with great success in FLM this year and will be using it in New York in November.
Thanks Moonraker...I have already been using Chaffe ease for long training runs and the Santiago Marathon last month....I think I bought it when I was across in the US of A.
Hi all, glad to hear we are getting what looks like a good social gathering for before, during and after the race. Completed my first marathon in Copenhagen on Sunday and am now looking forward even more to the atmosphere of NY. Planning to keep my hand in with another 'thon in Sept.
Congratulations on your first marathon Paul a! I'm running "Man verses Horse" in a few weeks (22 mile multi terrain in Wales). The countdown to New York definately feels as if it has begun!
still feels a long way away, think i'm not thinking about it too much cos then I'll get too excited and start counting days. Already done Rotterdam and Prague this year in 2.56 and 3.12, thinking about Blackpool and Nottingham as well prior to NY. Has everyone got accom and stuff sorted already.
I would be delighted with 3.25 in NY Paul a. My target is 3.30, we will see...
Yes you are right the horse was beaten for the first time last year during "Man verses Horse". After the race I got chatting to Huw Lobb who beat the horse and he informed me that that year he had also come 19th in the London Marathon. It is no wonder it took 25 years for two legs to beat four if that was the required standard!
Always Aching - In NYC you have the 5 bridges, plus you have the first bridge at the start, with a drop as well. Take it easy the first mile. Then bridge 2/3 are close together and break your rhythm, don't push it here and wait. After mile 16 it's not too difficult anymore, but before mile 16 I would not go too fast. Compared to FLM and level I would say NYC is 3-4 minutes slower course.
URR, thanks for that. How steep are these bridges??
14.5 miles done today, quite hot. I'm aiming for a long one every 2 weeks at present to keep up endurance then build it through the summer. All I thought this morning was, I must be mad!!
Not very steep, more long incline. That's the beast. Before you cross the Pulaski bridge. You can see in the background the Queensboro bridge. Both are quite close together. After you cross the Queensboro Bridge, you have managed 16m.
Train hard, chance doesn't come very often to run NYC.
End of Bridge is 2 miles URR - I love the bridges, particularly Brooklyn Bridge (you don't run it in the race tho) which you can walk across and get fab views of Manhattan Skyline - take a taxi across at night and walk back - fantastic.
Nicer looking bridge - bit like the Severn Bridge - but less welsh.
Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to it (despite just having shelled out a few hundred squid on travel and accommodation). Just don't think the Pulaski bridge is what I'm going to remember, although maybe it will be now.
URR - Big Sur marathon ? I've got a mate who keeps asking me if I want to do the half with him - it sounds tough but it is scenic out there.
Will do - should just about have enough wits about me at 16-miles to look around. By the time I get to Wills avenue bridge though I'll be in tunnel vision mode and will mostly be concentrating on my feet. The only sight I remember seeing from the last half at this years FLM was Big Ben, and that was only because it started ringing as I went past.
I agree.....nothing could compare to Big Sur.....only one bridge but a hell of a lot of climbing......I found the camber worst....constantly running at an angle. An absolute nightmare
new too this running lark, whats the big sur?anyone out there want to share accomomodation expenses with a lowly paid factory worker from the east midlands please get in touch-tadbypist@tiscali.co.uk staying 2/9 november to see all the sights.can you get marstons pedigree out there?
Does anyone know anything about the "yellow shower" you get on one of these bridges. I'm presuming something - and apparently you don't want the bottom road!!!
I'm hoping I'll be able to enjoy and take it in the whole way round - but I doubt it. In London, always lose concentration @18 miles for a few miles. I can just never remember that part of a marathon. Think my body goes into denial to forget it!!
Yellow shower? I'm assuming that means someone has spilt their gatorade ;-) other than that I'd be happy to take the low road if it means less up. I'm hoping that I won't be too fussed about the time so I can enjoy the sights.

Thanks for the congrats, got round in 3:25 and was pleased as my goal was sub 3:30.

Here we go!
Must go and have a guinness to.... errm... re-hydrate/replenish iron.
Can I join this thread?
First time doing New York. 6th marathon. Did London in 3h40, but was really hoping for 3h30.
Can I have some advise - is it a much harder course than London?

BTW You start here Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. End of bridge is mile 1.

Big Sur Marathon (check the photos and virtual gallery).
Two Oceans Marathon has a similar profile.
