Am I reading this right? HILLS? There aren't any proper hardcore-Yorkshire hills in the Barnsley 10k! I got a PB by 50 seconds on the course last year.
You're better in a race having short sharp uphills and long downhill drags than vice versa. You can't gain as much on a steep hill as you can on a long downhill.
Hi, I'm back again. I'm now being advised not to do this race as its too hilly for a first and it might put me off. Can anyone tell me if they've done the Netherthong 10k, and if so how does it compare?
Hare -Bolton was my first and that has a couple of decent climbs. Don't be put off by the odd hill here and there just enter it and enjoy the experience -you can always slow down a bit on the uphill bits and then enjoy the downhill bits
Hare. I did Netherthong last year - don't consider it if you don't want hills. It's hard work in places although a lovely course. If you're local to West Yorks try for the Abbey Dash, Dewsbury, Sandal Castle (slight uphill) but a cracking event, Wakefield Hospice. It's difficult to find a truly flat course in this area. Further afield is the Birchwood and Trafford 10K's.
Lincoln - April Silverstone - May Humber Bridge - June Woodhall - September Millennium Runs On - December Cleethorpes - January Brocklesby - June Moonraker - August
Thanks, the races that Markie has mentioned are all my local ones, I'm on hols for Abbey Dash unfortunately. I've got a place in the Brass Monkey in Jan, and found that the Barnsley was eactly half way through the training time I've got, and obviously half the distance. I've made up my mind anyway and will be sending in the entry form tonight. Thanks for your input everyone.
Helen -I normally run from home in Bromley Cross down to the jumbles reservoir, bradshaw, or up Cox green Road to Dimple and back along a trail (Cox green is a mean hill!) or sometimes run down Tonge moor to a58 Crompton Way over to A666 and back to Dunscar. Also am a member at Bolton Harriers which is good for training with others although not been for a while as I've been getting back after an achilles injury -returning there shortly to join a longer runs group. E mail me if you're interested -you might be a member already !
Hi all, i entered this online ages ago and i have not received a number yet, is this normal ? has anyone else got numbers ? just thinking its getting close and i already received my Percy Pud 10k number whish is in December !! anybody shed any light on this cheers john
Yes, the first lot of numbers are going out over the weekend. The reason why we don't do it earlier is that more people tend to lose numbers before the day.
Another tip - parking is going to be tight this year so leave yourselves plenty of time for finding a space. There's loads of side streets in Royston but no major car park available.
As a Royston resident I would point out that the Co-op and Kwik Save have sizeable car parks, but as part of the organising committee I wouldn't dream of suggesting anyone park there:-)
Hi, me and other half have got our numbers today, 146 and 147. Barnsleyrunner, will bear in mind about the parking - are co-op and kwik save near the race start (incase anyone was thinking of parking there of course?)
