Wardi - it sounds like you are a great friend and support to your friend's husband. Look after yourself though too.

    morning everyone.

Very sorry about your friend Wardi. Companionship in those difficult times will hopefully help a little.

Happy to see both BR and Hilly back posting on the Daily Thread. The place hasn't been the same without you both.

I'm still struggling to shake off the sniffles despite industrial quantities of vicks vapor rub stuffed up my oversized nose!
Yesterdays run was aborted but I intend to make up for it today.

Won't be posting tomorrow, I'll be taking part in a Computer Games industry fair in Dundee in which I'll be part of a question & answer panel session. Should be fun! :)

    Good running to all!

Mel - you do , you must! It's like rai-ai-ai-n.....

    Morning All

What: 9.1miles run; 60 mins turbo
    Why: general
    Last hard: yesterday
    Last rest: march 5

AJH - the outlook for your calf sounds quite good.

nrg - about 200. You can, indeed, only do your best. Rotterdamn is by no means the end of your campaign. I always did wonder how BR got you to join BAC :)

SVT - best of luck in the house selling and buying.

AF - TO BE that is the answer!

Pammie - you're on your way.

Micksta - when do you plan to do another marathon? 2007?

Melissa - I really hope this is the end of your calf/shin trouble.

NZC - my nephews were born a year apart and share the same birthday. I really liked your training sesion.

Wardi - you're right, there is no experience like death to give one perspective. It makes me realise that I really don't care if MrM leaves piles of clothes all over the house - I expect your clubmate's husband would dearly love to be annoyed by his wife now. No need to apologise - tis the stuff of life.

Hilly - great to hear from you! I'm really looking forward to meeting you.

WP - things are looking up! these are for you:,,,,,..... - I had to take such a long breath to read your post :)

SVT - finally remebered to dig out this

BR - really sorry to hear about FLM.

Imski - I think a lot of men would feel intimidated by that - though perhaps quite a few wouldn't be able to admit it.

Podro - wouldn;t work on me, I quite like that kind of thing. Skipping the club run in favour of sofa and beer seems like a good plan.

    Morning all,
And welcome back HILLY & BR! I guess you have both become full-time training partners now! ;p

Hope everything works out well for you both and things do not get to difficult, also HILLY make sure BR does not convert you to running in NB150s! :)

6.25mile club run last night at a steady comfy pace went well, increased pace as the run went on and finished nice and strongly.

    What:
pm: Track session with IEK Group.
    5x400m with a 4min recovery.

Helping out female Elite runner tonight training for london, so will pace her around at 77-78sec laps for five, then another group member will take my place for the remaining part of her session.

    Why:
Spinning the legs over, Race taper week, 10k training plan and helping a fellow group member whilst I can!

    HOLLYWOOD:
PANTS is certainly a very focused individual but I reckon his mileage is a bit extreme!

    NZC:
Quality breeds success in my view!

    Morning runners.

I know the lyrics. Well, I know the artist and album. Not sure of the track.

Not been doing much lately. I've been feeling generally a "bit rough". Forced a long run on Sunday, even though the last 9 miles were stop/start with stomach cramps.

I went out last night, and my feet are very painful. Feels a bit like a stress-fracture, but I can't believe I would have developed them simultaneously on both feet. Hurts just to put my shoes on, never mind lace them up.

Bleargh. Not had an enjoyable run for a week.

Haven't been reading the thread either. Sorry :-(

    Morning All.

First chance to post since Rome marathon on the 26th.

Immpossible to fully catch up with what has been happening while i have been away, but from reading todays reports so far I gather you have had some saddness in your life recently wardi and very sorry to hear that. I hope you find comfort and solace in those around you.

Wasnt sure what to expect from this race as i really didnt think I was doing sufficient mileage to run a marathon, though my training has been consistent.

Race day was fine and sunny. There were over 12,000 entries. A record for the event.

The bare result was that I finished 2,892nd out of the 10,034 who finished in 3hrs 41mins and 56 secs according to the organisers or 3hrs 41 mins 50secs according to my watch as it took a few secs for me to realise the race had actually started!

my plan was to start very slowly to give me a chance to finish and I certainly managed that!

The following splits are based on my own timings through the checkpoints which in fairness are very close to the official time given by the organisers.

The start was outside the colosseum and skirted around the monument to victor emmanuel in the piazza venezia. This early stage was very crowded and at times it was difficult to keep moving. We then ran past the circus maximus and headed suoth before a large loop took us heading back noth along the side of the river and 5k (26:15).

The next 5k saw us cross the river and to the vatican, with a brief stretch in St Peters square. 10k 51:09 (24:53). Much of the race route saw us following the river and the stretch from 10 to 15k saw us head back from the vatican to skirt the river running north. 15k 1.16:36. (25:27).

It was here my conservative early pace began to pay off as I began moving through the field, very slowly at firt, but more and more as the race went on.

By 20k we were back over the the other side of the river now heading back south.
    20k 1.42:44 (26:08), following closely the river still to 25k 2.08:20 (25:35).

The stretch between 25k and 30k tookk us through piazza navona, one of the min piazzas in Rome with one of the few bands on the course and huge crowds as we ran past all the outside restraunts crowded with people enjoying there sunday lunches.

30k 2.34:17 (25:57). Passing masses of people now and very pleased at how consistent my splits were, thinking I had a chance of getting reasonably close to 3.30.

30k to 35k took us past the circus maximus again, this time continuing to head south and a small loop around pizza san paulo. 35k 3.00:06 (25:49).
It was here that the wheels came off unfortunately, just not quite enough miles in the legs to sustain my over those last few K's. 40k 3.28:27 (28:20!) and 13:13 to run the 2k+.

Still pleased with this, times and training can always be worked on. It has left me enthusiastic for my next challenge.

After the race I began to develop a horrendous toothache and began to feel ill, cols and shivery. The tooth ache developed into an abscess, so I am wondering how much this may have affected my performance also. Im now on antibiotics and thinga are settling down a lot although my face is still slightly swollen.

Had my first run today sinc the race, just a gentle 3 miles. Legs feel quite heavy though.

    Good Runnings everyone.

    Morning,

Well wishes to the long term sick and injured: Mava you must be getting really fed up, have you been working too hard?

Sportaloo, what is your job and is there no way you can get more holidays? It's just not healthy to go so long without a break, and whoever is in your HR function should be insisting you take time off. Apologies if you're your own boss! Good luck with 57 k run.

Imski, agree groups of teenagers can be intimidating, I ran through a group the other week who thought it would be highly amusing to chuck snowballs in my face. Naturally I responded in a mature and dignified fashion, ie I turned around and yelled **** off back. :) And am fresh from turfing group of drunken louts out from illadvised party. No more Ms Nice Person!

NZChristine, love the idea of training barefoot like a 12 yr old.

Tiggers Mate; early days but will report on acupuncture effectiveness eventually.

    What: Climbing, definitely, no running.
Why: haven't climbed all week, and off for long fell run tomorrow so want to be in good form given current rather pathetic state.
    Last hard: last night.
    rest: Tues.

    Have a good day all.

melli - that's really good stuff. Thanks for the link. I can see myself trying those stretches at home tongiht (and probably falling over...).

Mellisa - you don't know the lyric, yet almsot everyone else does. Isn't it ironic, don't you think?

Oh, missed your post Peter, nice report and congrats on your marathon especially your pacing strategy. Hope you're better soon, tooth abscess may well have affected your performance.

Hilly, meant to say now you're based in the North you have absolutely no excuses for not turning up at a few fell races in the Lakes:)

Pete - sounds like an excellent experience! First Spencers next Weds if you fancy it:-)

Micksta - thanks. Subtle as ever:-)

Melli - I'm not sorry. I've had 2 wonderful races at Snake Lane and Doncaster and I know one day I'll be back for another go.

Erm, I don't know the lyrics. Must be from the last 20 years then:-)

    I know I know!

What:um running about at work really.

Thanks for pilates replies, just need to find a good class I think. Physio was showing me some exercises yesterday but I was rubbish at them.

Well done Peter on your marathon, sorry to hear about the abcess.

    Hello again BR and Hilly.

Sorry to hear about friend Wardi.

Had my first anxiety dream about London last night, it was all uphill, I felt rotten with a headache and a sore throat and Mr AJH wouldnt let me stop. (I also got lost but that happens to me all the time). Then when I woke I really did feel rotten, I guess that was why I dreamt like that.

Peter G - great report. I love Rome. Probably the most architecturally and historically interesting city in the world.

BR - No FLM? Bad luck. Hope you are going to turn up to cheer though.

Melissa P - Ozzy Osbourne took the p155 out of a video by this artist (might even have been the video for this song). Funniest thing I have ever seen.

Podro - I'll certainly be there and am looking forward to watching and cheering all my friends. It'll be nice to have a couple of beers the night before for a change:-)

Peter - Sounds like a fantastic experience. Good time off 'didnt think I was doing sufficient mileage to run a marathon' Hope the mouth is feeling better.

SR - I am the manager of the Johannesburg branch of a company importing specialised steel piping for the petrochemical industry. Very much my own boss, which means I only have myself to blame. I have always lacked the ability to do anything in moderation :o)

    Afternoon All,

Clink: Sexy accent? Mine's more "tek oop t'arms 'ginst see o'troubles"

NZC: That's the way to do intervals!

    Melli: That is the question.

BR: You've shattered my dream of out-sprinting you down The Mall then?

PG: Solid run at Rome. I think the infection would have slowed you down over the last 5k.

Ds Racers have bestowed a blister on the ball of my foot today. God knows what state my feet will be in after 26m in the b*ggers!

What: AM: 15m MP+10% PM 4m maybee 5m recovery as I'm tantilisingly close to that 3 figure week.
    Why: Final push for FLM
    Last Hard: Yeasterday
    Last Rest: 61 days

    Have a good one.

FAB -that doesn't sound much fun. May try being very aggressive with icing and anti-inflammatories for a few days. Good luck.

Peter G -Well done in Rome - wonderfully paced until the final few kms too. The absence sounds nasty - hope you are better soon. BTW there is a Yorkshire Social on 9th April in Leeds - thread on Clubhouse - would be great if you could make it.

SVT one of the exercises (Toe Walking with Opposite-Ankle Dorsiflexion) is really funny to watch - MrM looked like a baby ostrich. But they really did seem to work.

BR - good for you! Snake Lane was a real corker. Do you have other plans? 10ks?

    Morning peeps.

BR, sorry to hear you won't be running FLM but pleased that you'll be there cheering on us lesser mortals anyway! Glad that Hilly will still be running - even if is in "clogs"!

Wardi, you sound like the kind of guy your friend's husband will be glad to have around at this difficult time. Thoughts are with you.

Sportaloo, didn't you know that all work and no play makes Jack (=Sportaloo) a very dull boy??

Peter G, great report and well done on a very respectable time. I know it's not quite what you wanted but don't underestimate the effect a lurking abscess may have had on your performance.

    What: 8 miles easy.
Why: Despite injury and trying to be strict with myself I'm having trouble keeping 'easy'. Last night's run averaged out at 8:20 pace. I really don't want to end up re-injured so I MUST be more circumspect.
    Last hard: Probably last night!
    Last rest: Monday.

    Enjoy your day.

AF-DS Racers blistered balls of my feet after 20 miles. Have been using other trainers since but will go back to them for FLM. The blisters didn't hurt until after the race. Should just about get away with 26miles, but the 0.2 might hurt:)

Hello again all. Good to see the arrival of some new names, and the return of some more longstanding ones. (Nearly said 'old' there!)

    What? Easy 6 miles
Why? Racing at the weekend ('Hello Scobos')
Last Hard - Tuesday's 7 mile club run in 43.30
    Last Rest - Saturday

URR - that looks like a great pace - our race times seem to be quite similar at the moment, but my tempo run (of 4 miles) is usually done around 24 mins. What was the distance of yours?

And another thing: 'H-Streets'? What are they when they're at home?

    Okay, here's my story:-

30 year old man, married with 2 kids (6 and 2). Live in Fife, Scotland.

Started running December 2004 to lose weight and get fit for Canoe slalom (was in Division 1) but haven't competed in that since. Enjoyed running too much. Joined Fife AC in April 05 after training with them since January. First 10k race in April 05 in 46m07s. PB's so far are 10k 40m27s, 5k 19m53s (on track), 10m 1h16m24s, 1/2 mara 1h32m32s.

Currently returning from injury sustained in January just when I was going to start FLM training, so had to defer to 2007. Probably my own fault through doing 3 10 mile runs in a week after no running for a month with an achilles strain, altering my running style whilst still wearing big clumpy shoes. No races planned at the moment as want to take time building up mileage again and learning to run in flat, non-cushioned shoes (Puma H Streets and others). I'm sure I'll do something in the next couple of months or so.

Biggest current influence in my running is probably your very own nrg-b. The man speaks a lot of sense (as do a lot of others).

I have always exercised a bit (apart from my late teens which are a bit hazy due to many different substances, alcohol, etc) through canoeing, football, etc but nothing comes close to the feeling I get when I'm out running. Being able to train when I want on my own or with friends. The effort to beat my previous PB with every race. The cameraderie between runners at races and training.

And that's about it. Now you know about me.

    Gary

Peter G - Great report, thanks for sharing it.

BR - Quite envious of you going to watch FLM, should be interesting seeing it from the other side and experiencing that atmosphere as a spectator. What is your next target race?

    What: Rest
Why: Still tapering, 3 days to go!
    Last hard: 10 days
  • Options
Cheers Beeble. Join the club! Like you, find a nice run singularly exhilarating, and like you, I find it terribly easy to overdo it!

My PB's are mostly in your ball park
    5k 18.45 (3 years ago)
    10k 39.55 (10 years ago!)
    1/2M 1.28.05 (10 years ago!)
    M 3.36.40 (10 years ago!)

Despite the groin strain about which I moan daily on this forum, I have been training very nicely this year so far, and am desperately keen to break that 40min barrier over 10k, and possibly in the summer attack my 5k pb as well.

Am 38 years old now, but having come to terms with running about 6 times a week, up to 40M I should still be able to some damage on 10k, and possibly beyond.

Hope you'll enjoy the forum as much as I do!

You speak Dutch? No? Ok..... Where's Imski!
