Been playing with my canon 350 for a couple of months now.
I'm interested in hawks and the like and go to the Hawk Conservancy at Andover a lot. They fly all kinds of birds and I've had trouble with the autofocus suddenly deciding to focus on the backgrond and not the fast moving bird. So for some of the action shots I have used manual focus, gets a little complicated trying to focus and zoom at the same time.
But generally I'm pleaed with the camera. I bought a sigma 70-300 zoom as well, for under £100, and I think it was well worth the money.
how the autofocus works depends on the camera. with the 400d (and many others) you can set it up to try and select by itself what it thinks you are trying to focus on. or you can tell it to focus on a specific point (can be centre but doesn't have to be) and then make sure that point is on the item you want it to focus on. i normally use the first one but for something like the birds i'd use the second as its more likely to get the result you are after. actually for the birds i might even use manual focus to be sure. as maks friend says it is fiddly though if you are after action shots.
the aperture is set at f5.6 which i'd assume is probably as wide as it goes? it does shorten the depth of field but i think that would be fine if the focus was spot on - in fact i think it would look great as the plants in front would then be slightly out of focus.
where the outer edges of the shot are naturally out of focus and the soft focus kind of frames the central subject without you having to mess around with the photo afterwards or use those funny filters
i used to use those coloured and special effects filters alot when i was a teenager
wondering if my old canon lens will be usable on a 350D ?
been waiting for prices to come down for about a year or more now that the 400 is out , i can pick up a cheap(ish) 350 :-)
also planning to use it for some stop motion animation pics
just read it is compatible with one of the progs and so you can control the camera from the pc
Thanks for all of this help. I managed to identify the focusing problem as being related to the image stabilisation. I'd forgotten to turn it off and I was using a tripod. The pictures are much clearer now although the birds now know I am there so I am leaving it for a while as I scare them. The aperture is teh widest it goes - it's a kit sony 70-300mm lense.
The aperture question was related to the software on a mac and if anyone has used it?
hi, not been in for a while, caught up in house moving and all of life long possessions in storage.
canon 300/350/400 and also 10/20/30 all have smaller sensors which are in a different position to the film, hence you get a 1.6 crop effect. ie a 10-20 lens would actually be equivalent to 16-32, so 28mm becomes 45mm, etc. This is great for boosting zoom end (300=480), but naff if you like wide angle. I have the canon 10-22 EFS (digi only) and it's great, gives you bakc the wide end.
So for old canon lenses you can use them on any digital camera, but if it's one of the above you get the crop effect.
The EFS lenses are specifically designed for the digital SLRs, so you then can't use them on old canon bodies.
Also be aware the canon 5D is full frame, ie no crop factor, and I think the canon 1 mark III is a 1.3 crop, although I'm not rich enough to really know much about the high end of the market!

It's pretty fast and should be good for capturing runners on overcast days. I think it's in the region of £350
ooohhhh, I never realised there was a photography thread. At work and no time to read back, but what's the nature of the thread and is it ok to join in?? Did a City & Guilds in photography and developing B&W a loooong time ago... it's a much loved hobby... love macro photography especially insects... got a couple of nice shots on this holiday... would love a digital SLR but can't afford another expensive hobby besides tri?
Just got a Canon 75-300 Image Stabilsed lens, and I'm very happy with it. Now all I need is someone to produce a stabilised version of my Sigma 170-500 lens that doesn't cost the same as a car and I'll be a very happy boy.
Some shots from my recent holiday taken with a Canon 300D & various lenses
EF28mm f2.8 won't be especially flattering for most portraits, even of a 1.6 sensor. In general portait photography you want a longer lens to 'flatten' the face, as it were. A 50mm lens makes a nice portrait lens on a 1.6 crop sensor. The Canon 50mm f1.4USM lens would be good.
The 35mm would be better than the 28, as this is about the same effect as a 50mm 'standard' lens. It comes in at £180ish.
I understand what you are saying about fitting stuff in. I'd ask the question what advantage are you expecting to acheive over a cheap zoom. If it's faster shutter speed, then in a studio its not an issue - use more light. If its less depth of field, then that's plausible, but at f2 won't get the feet in focus if the eyes are if you are doing full body length shots from near by. If it's a higher image quality, then yes you will get this. However, it won't necessarily be a more flattering image. A second flash gun would be a good investement - a second hand 580ex would be useful unless you have studio lighting....
I have two studio flash head so need no more light
Cheap lens because I can't afford the ones I'd like and as for zooms I already have a 18-200 sigma
my studio is 3 mtrs wide and 5 mtrs long so using a 50mm means I need to take the photos through the french doors which is OK in the summer but not so good in the winter
my studio photos not great but OK for friends and family mostly taken with Canon 50mm f1.8 II before i dropped it and it broke in two
hi, don't know if you're still reading posts on this one but i'd defo say a canon EOS. can't beat 'em!
also, when you've got your sparkly new camera you must check out blipfoto.com it's a great little 'one-a-day' community. very addictive but v interesting and they're always a good group of people to ask about geeky stuff! (my blip is blipfoto.com/bananablip you might see a few running related ones there!

i have to say i barely noticed the focus issue till M mentioned it..
you're very observant M!

LOK you can use all the old EF 35mm lenses on a 350D but the digital changes a 50mm is more of a 70mm I think, anyway some think like that.
something weird about focal length happens doesn't it
must be because the "film" is in a different place in the new one
thanks GD

I'm looking for suggestions on a new lens 28-200/300
Has anyone got one and or used one they can recommend
Many thanks
GD
Change of plan I may buy a Canon EF28-135mm f3.5-5.6 (72mm) Image Stab.
Has anyone used one?
got the canon 400d (just ordered)
and going to try out my telephoto zoom lens from old film camera on it
when it arrives
reading back,
i see my july prediction about jessops was not far off
wonder how much longer they will survive
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/business/s/1028345_jessops_to_close_81_stores

Here's aflikr thread I just googled on the lens.

Right it's my birthday coming up and was thinking about a new Portrait lens Canon EF28mm f2.8
anyone got any other ideas?

DB the only problem with that is at 50mm to take a full length adult shot I have to take the pic from outside the studio
and the 50mm f1.4 is £80 more than i have got for my birthday

Fair 'nuff.
I'd buy the new Canon 18-55 IS lens. Have a look at the review on http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_1855_3556is/index.htm
Very useful lens, and they can't beleive the IQ. Not quite as good as a fixed lens, but more use out and about...
Either that or the longest wide angle I could get away with with the studio you have. If it has to be 28mm so be it...
