Hi GD- Sadly, I haven't taken any pics for ages, just never got around to it! I've been teaching someone to use their camera, though. I hope to take some good ones at Luton 2008, and in Germany over the Xmas hols. Nice portraits you've got there!
The hill was used in the old Hovis Ads years ago to using Dvorak's New World Symphony as the backing music. The voice over was with a strong Yorkshire accent." Eee by gum lad 'twas a struggle getting up 't hill"
But the hill is in Shaftesbury, Dorset. Wonders of TV advertising. Should have been "Arr buoy dat izz a reeel ard 'ill is thatn"
I thought I'd boing this thread to pick some photographer's brains here, there used to be a few of us. GD? Mrs Funkin? Moomoo?
My photography has taken a huge backseat over the last two years and it's something I'd like to pick up again next year. I sold my 35mm SLR a few years ago when times were tough financially. After a few frustrating years of just snapping around with a cheap point & shoot camera, I'd now like to invest in a decent digital SLR. In the "olden days" of 35mm, when digi SLRs first came out, they were virtually unaffordable, but prices have come down quite a bit. Of course digi cameras are a bit like race bikes i.e. you could happily spend £2.5k on one... but I'm not quite that rich, LOL.
I could spend about £500 on one - so I was wondering what everyone is using these days? I was eyeing up an EOS D1000, which is a bit above budget but can be aquired for around my budget if you shop around online.
Nam the EOS1000d is £319 (body only) at the moment at Warehouse Express I was taking to a dealer today about it because my nephew wants one for Christmas he says for the price it's very good much better than the old 350D which is what I was using on the photos above.(now upgraded to the 5D Mk II)
I would say don't buy the standard lens kit as it's crap and I possibly have an old one kicking around you could have for the postage if i can find it.
Depending on what you are planing on photographing buy the best lens you can. Saying that the 50mm 1.8 for £90 is a fantastic lens for the money and well worth having in your bag, just be careful with it it's made of plastic and easily breakable!! (two down saving up for the 1.4)
Second the 50mm 1.8, I adore mine, best value lens EVER! I use a 400D, haven't windowshopped in a while though so I'm not really sure what's what with the newest models. Or if you felt like going Nikon, the D200's a lovely wee camera....
Hi folks! I still haven't switched to digital SLR, I'm still using my old Canon IXUS 750. I'm saving more for trips these days. I haven't been taking the camera out an awful lot, it's like I already photographed everything around here and need to travel to somewhere new to get cracking with it again!
GD- something you mentioned above- did you ever find a course to go on? It's something I looked into a long time ago, I was tempted by one of the American online courses, but it was a bit expensive.
Nam- sounds good to me! I have seen some of your past work, so go for it!
I was chatting to Mrs Funkin (EOS 50D/20D) and Lee the Pea (Nikon D90) last night on FB. I second how lovely a good 50mm lense is!!!! I used to have one with my old 35mm SLR and it's such a joy to use.
GD if you shop around I've seen the EOS 1000D for £309 with lense (which you can then always keep as a spare). The Nikon D3000 looks like a lovely camera as well for relatively little money. I'm thinking I might stick with EOS though simply because I'm familiar with it? GD wow... I bet the 5D MkII must have set you back a few quid.
Moomoo, I did a bog standard evening course locally which was a City & Guilds done over 2 evenings a week. You'd get set assignments ("texture", "depth of field", "weather", "faces"... all sorts) and we also did a bit of B&W developing. It was really interesting.
Do you other photographers ever get into a run & then wish you'd been able to lug along your tripod/humungous camera/lenses cos you're running someplace so awesome you just need to photo it? Or is that just me? I take my cam biking sometimes, but can't imagine combining running with my chunky EOS and gear!
GD - nice pics, I think Nam got a Nikon D 3000, but not sure, she did post something on FB about playing with her new toy and needing to recharge the batteries
Blimey... 18 months... has it really been that long?
GD, yes I got a D3000 a while ago. In process of clearing out spare bedroom with a view of having a small studio set up. Toying with camera upgrade ideas subject to VS pay out...
Just thought I boing-ing this thread, wondering if there are any more old and new amateur, semi-pro or pro photographers around in these parts these days?
One of my shots recently ranked 'highly commended' (i.e. one of the runners up) in a national competition for a national older persons charity (theme was positive images of ageing & older people), and BBC have one of my butterflies on their website.
It's nice to have little successes like that.
I've done some portraits for a friend of mine which she was really pleased with, I shot Sprocket's kids (not literally I hasten to add) and she was really happy with those results and am about to play second fiddle at my first wedding soon.
Portfolio is slowly building... and entering little competitions here & there...
Must be hard and nerve wrecking when you're very involved in the actual wedding yourself, I would imagine?
I wouldn't have the confidence to be primary photographer at a wedding at this stage, but 'second fiddle' kind of gets the luxury of not having the main burden of responsibility and pressured to get the formal shots organised, but can lurk in the background to do all the unobserved interactive stuff.
I went full time as a photographer 5 years ago and 2 years ago my husband gave up his job to join me in the business.
I specialise in weddings and portraits yes, it is a lot of pressure.... You get one chance to get it right !
I did quite well in the Master Photographers Association awards last year for my region winning Fashion and Glamour photographer of the year, Portrait photographer of the year, pictorial photographer of the year and overall Master Photographer of the Year.
I was also ranked 16th worldwide for my portrait work by the international aperture awards
At the moment we are in peak wedding season, should start to ease up mid October and our last wedding this year is the week before Christmas !
