This is a work on progress but I reckon a run like 1mi easy/[8-10]mi goal pace/1mi easy cooldown makes for a nice test of your goal pace. You want to do the above and see your HR stable at say [80%] of your max. If the HR trace is a flat tabletop over the bulk of the run, thats confirmed your goal pace for the marathon. If however your HR drifts up from say 79% to 86% you may still be accumulating lactate faster than you can clear it at that pace - you need to slow down and revise your target. Or to put it another way, you need to do more running at just below that pace to get your body used to it.
I like this because you can do it quite often in training and with much less risk/expense/recovery time than a proper HM race or time trial.
Going ok, thanks. aiming for 3:20ish. This week is a cutback week., and the weekend's LSR was my first 20miler of the buildup. I did the above goal pace session yesterday and it all seems in line So far.
@ Tim - I just googled Stevenage Cylepaths. I was running in the fields last night - the cyclepaths are saved for dark nights!
@Stop..Gaza - I put a link on the other Stevenage thread as there is a display in the library with the route. When there is a decent map published I'll try and ride the route one night to clock the elevation.
@Stop - The Luton half is the worst organised race that I have ever run. In places so bad that it was actually dangerous. It is the only race I have ever done where I can see no positives

Anyway to get back to the plot -

you have an autumn race in mind?
Well that's the plan from now. Will reassess closer to race day
I think the latest was that our hero was to do a 10mile time trial and then play a game of squash
We both know that it's really scenery like this that is really making yopu want to do it!

The spectators always make an effort for the marathon.
In fairness teh council has spent money sprucing up the place and went with a new slogan:
Stevenage - If you think its a shithole, you should see Dunstable - Serious!
I do hope he is alright
