Am a rather infrequent visitor to this thread but have read the postings since my last visit.

WtnMel - thanks for the Beefeater anniversary tip. As we are veggies we don't tend to go there. We went for an M&S  'dine in for two'. Who says romance is dead!

DeltaDawn - welcome. You have an impressive running CV.

Redhead - you seem to able to run a marathon at the drop of a hat (or stitch?). I can't quite cope with this proposition.

The mild weather of the last week has been very welcome, notwithstanding global warming. I had a bit of a bug so was not 100% (gone now). I managed a parkrun yesterday - 21:35. First time below 22.00 for a couple of months so pleased with this. Had a bit of a head-to-head with another 60+ guy but surged (sic) past him in the last 200 metres and hung on to the lead; this felt good!

Managed a 7 miler this morning including along the prom. Very nice.

I guess it will soon be time to reflect on 2016 and look forward to 2017. As it's my birthday between Xmas and the New Year at least this means I can enter 2017 with a more favourable AG!

I'm planning to take advantage of the extra parkruns being organised over Xmas/New Year period, but I'm not sure of the courses as yet - and there are still some yet to confirm that they'll be staging events.

    Evening all,

Red, thanks. I should take it easy for the rest of the year. You have more than exceeded your targets this year.

The race went very well, much better than expected. There were only 3 of us from the Club this year and I ran all the way with Karen. We were racing each other from start to finish and crossed the line together with identical chip times of 1.23.30. I was really chuffed with that, as it was 3 minutes quicker than last year. I was first MV70+ and nearly 4.5 minutes quicker than the first MV60. Karen was 2nd in the FV 35+ and Alexsandra 3rd in the FV55+. Karen and I were 57th and 58th out of 161 finishers. I think the three of us did the club proud, and it is a shame that we didn't have more entrants. The course was about 95% off road and very hilly, WtnMel will be glad to knowimage Elevation gain was 672 ft. It was very cold in the early stages due to thickish, lingering fog, which only cleared about half way through.

I will try to upload a photo of the 3 of us, taken after the finish. It may be too big as it was taken on a mobile phone. Sorry it was too big, but I will try to upload it to the clubs website and the webmaster might be able to reduce it

Columba, sorry I didn't look back, but thank you for your birthday wishes.

JB, our posts crossed. Well done for your splendid 21.35 parkrun. The 5k distance really does seem to be your speciality.

HS : just read your race report. That's a very fine performance indeed. I couldn't find the details of the actual event though? (My failing probably.) However to beat younger competitors is itself a measure of excellence regardless of your AG. One of the oddities about the WAVA (AG) formula is that of course it takes no account of the course or conditions. Indeed, I assume that all the world records on which the WAVA formula is based are track based and probably achieved in near-optimal conditions?

You are right on your comment that I am a bit of a 5K specialist. I guess we all have our 'favourite' event which plays to our strengths. At a bit of a tangent here, I recall that at the very top level John Regis was a world class 200m runner and almost as good a 400m (relay) runner - but had there been a 300m medal event might well have been even better!

So for me, a flat 5k on a tarmac surface with no wind is just about perfect: I'm relatively OK going uphill but hopeless going downhill; I avoid mud like the plague as I can't plough through it; and I'm blown about a bit in the wind! (All these are also applicable when I'm on a bike - I've done a few duathlons.)

Hence I tend to avoid x-country events. I think the word 'wimp' might be useful here!

Rest day for me today which, as it involves having our 15 month old granddaughter for the day, is a funny sort of rest.

    Morning all,

JB, thanks for your comments. You'll find all the details of the race and results if you google Heartbreaker Tailwind 10 mile. The WAWA calculations are indeed based of world records set on running tracks, and only on specified tracks. I've no idea where these tracks are though. My WAVA for this extremely hilly, multi terrain race was 73.37%, so impossible to relate to a flat track time.

HS - ah, found it. Looks like a tough course judging by finishing times. Isn't it nice to see the little '1' by your name? (Call me Mr Shallow!)

I had a holiday once near Fordingbridge - lovely area.

    Morning all,

TE, you star, what  a brilliant result. Very well done. You put the youngsters to shame and must be an inspiration to many in your club image x

JB6, you too with your speedy 5k time. With you on the downhills as I always pick my way down flinty hills very carefully as I have faceplanted several times! Granddaughter sitting counts as cross-training.

I'm off to yoga soon to find my inner tranquility.........

    Morning all,

We're innundated with men and machinery today as they are cutting back our trees and hedges near the power-lines which cross our land. Looking forward to some peace and tranquility soon!

Not running today as I feel the need for a bit of a break today, mentla rather than physical, but will be out for a plod tomorrow.

    Morning all,

Thanks Red, I do try to lead by example in the club. I hope they think that "if that old man can do it, then so can I." The downhills in the race were quite dodgy, as the ground was wet and slippery, and there were lots of stones and rocks, but few roots. I have worked hard on my downhill running, and this has paid off, as I have more confidence to "let myself go."  The photo of the 3 of us after the finish is on the Hardley web now, so if anyone is interested, click on the results tab of the Hardley Runners web. There are several photos of Karen and I dead heating on the official photographers web, so if I decide to buy one, will post on here.

I've received an e mail from RW advising that a new super web will soon be on line, making it easier to navigate, use on mobile phones etc. That is probably why they have rather neglected the current web, concentrating on the new one. Lets hope it doesn't have lots of annoying bugs!

I did a recovery road run with Sarah yesterday in the rain. We ran 5.84 miles, and Sarah is getting faster, so recoveries aren't so easy now.

We have a hill rep session at club this evening. Did I mention hills?image These hill sessions certainly produce results, as all our club runners run strongly uphill in races.

HS - how many days do you train a week? (I'm guessing 8!)

  • Options

JB, I run 5 days a week now, or 4 when I have a race. I like to rest Friday and Saturday before a race, but I used to rest on Friday and do a slow run on the Saturday.

  • Options

HS - thanks. I'm on a 5 days a week schedule too. Assuming I'm doing  parkrun then I'll have a rest on a Friday and on a Monday.

Many congratulations TE! What a marvellous result. Surely a 73% WAVA on a tough course like that must equate to something in the 80s or 90s done on a flat track.

Red - I doubt very much if your muse has lost her mojo. She just needs a rest. Wake her up in the new year.

Did 4 miles on Sunday, and 3 and a half tonight with the running club, and The Knee seems to have barely complained.

  • Options

    Morning all,

Thanks Columba, you are probably right, although I wouldn't fancy racing 10 miles on a running track. I'm glad to hear that your knee is still improving, and hopefully will soon be 100%

Rather regretting doing last nights hill session with the club, as I'm suffering for it now. We did 4 sets of 45,30, 45 seconds, with jogs back down, and 90 second walk recoveries between sets. There was also a long run out and return, so total mileage was 8.33. Karen also found the session tough, but are both taking today as a rest day.

Karen and Alice are going to watch Jason Donovan performing on Thursday. I didn't know he was still singing.

  • Options

Ray - re Jason Donovan - I'm not sure he ever did! (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

    ooh that was cutting, JB!

Great result TE, you are really keeping the flag flying.

Yesterday's Aqua-biking was not as intense as normal, we had a different instructor and he didn't really push us much, however my sore shoulder is still reminding me it's there! I think it's actually not the shoulder, it's radiating from my neck.

John has entered the Thames river 14km marathon swim (6 August 2017) so I have been busy creating a training plan for him, not so easy as he will also be training for a half-ironman triathlon which he will race on 11th June. I am going to enter the Cologne 6km open water swim again (4 June) and try to better my previous time. Got two sprint triathlons coming up too in May - have to do something to keep busy! Though I did run 12k with Charlie on Sunday.

JB - I do run but not as much as I used to, after having both hips replaced. Swimming is better for me.

Sorry HS - my fault. I was working across two forum threads. But as you asked Ray is actually a very good runner in his late 60s.....I think you'd be well matched!

  • Options

Thanks for the explanation John. Is he a club runner?

  • Options

HS - yes, one of the North London ones I believe - but I can't recall which I'm afraid.

  • Options

Thanks JB,our paths are unlikely to cross.

    Morning all,

Quite a dull morning and rain forecast later. The club session this evening is 400 metre reps. This is normally one of my favourite sessions, but I have done more than enough hard races/ sessions over the last few weeks/months, that I will just go for an easy forest run.

I'm off shortly for a pre Christmas haircut. image

  • Options

    Afternoon all,

Busy, busy, busy day but nearly caught up with everything except writing the remaining Christmas cards. Getting excited about Saturday which will be my last event of the year as I've rescheduled the NYE marathon and swapped to one on 2nd January image

TE, having your hair cut will take a few seconds off your timesimage

The new re-vamped RW site that they keep on about has been causing a lot of problems already. Obviously none of you will know that on the Triathlon forum we have a thread running where we keep track of swim, bike and run training, and log points for workouts completed -  1 point for every mile run,1 for every 3 miles  cycled or every 15 minutes on a turbo, 1 point for every 400m swum plus an extra point for every open water swim. At the end of the year we tot up all the points scored in the year. This fun log has been going for 8 years now. For the past couple of weeks every time I've tried to log points in I've found that both John and I have been zapped back to November so have lost track of points scored this month. Hope this isn't an indication of what's going to occur with the launch of the new site.

  • Options

Have given up trying to  correct the errors on that site, it seems determined to keep us both listed in November's thread and once again John and I have had our December points wiped out and we are shown as back in November. Fed up with it.

You smelly old bastards. I bet you all fart with every step when you run. You grey haired old fuckers

No offence or anything though, lol. ????

Morning all, but not to the pathetic troll.

Red, the haircut will certainly make me more aerodynamic. I have no more races this year, but already have entered quite a few for next year, and about to enter a couple more. Each year I say that I will only enter three or four, but seem to enter more, year on year.

I ran a tempo pace 8 miles in the forest yesterday, and today is a rest day.

  • Options

    Morning all,

    Oh, how delightful, a troll!

TE, lol at you not entering as many races; that's what I've been saying about marathons next year...........

  • Options

ow my head really hurts this morning.  Sorry for being a pathetic troll last night.  I think it's ace that old people run, sorry for being an idiot.
