Muttley - I agree that can happen. Steve - there are some bosses that ARE racist, and if records of ethnicity weren't kept, then they could get away with it, so that's why that data is recorded.
At the end of the day, there are racist people, and there are people who would play a 'race' card. Small minorities in both though - but that's humans for you.
Yes, I suppose it does happen, but my point was that that is no reason to disregard genuine racism as coming under the same bracket. I suppose the problem is that this kind of anti-racist legislation is designed to combat racist attitudes, but this takes a long time, and it often doesn't help the individual on a short-term basis. Basically, it can sometimes go a bit wrong and give people an excuse to scrap the lot.
Sex and ethnic background *are* important for your career. Part of my identity is my identity as a woman. I'm never gonna get away from that and nor do I want to. I don't want to be discriminated against for it, but it is part of who I am. If I can't bring my character and identity in to a job then I don't want that job. It is important to recognise and value differences, not to pretend they're not an issue when they very much are.
The figures collected are for monitoring purposes, I imagine, so they can check whether they do employ equal amounts of peeps from each group, who's responding to the adverts and so on.
I'm in no doubt that there's still racism out there (hugely reduced since 20 years ago), but I do think that the people who I think Steve's referring to don't do anyone any favours. It makes racism into a bit of a joke, which obviously it isn't.
Anon Feel free to express your views. Not sure what you mean by nice and pleasing but if your views are ill informed, racist, ignorant and bigoted then we'll tell you. You may even be " cazzed " which is not something I particulalrly agree with since it gives no one the chance to debate and maybe presuade someone that other opinions may be valid.
I think that someone who posts an inflamitory opinion has no interest in having that opinion changed and to allow such opinions to remain on here would be some sort of weird endorsement and so they are rightly cazzed.
If you can post your ignorant views without them being inflamitory then I think you have every right to do so. Of course that doesn't mean people have to agree with them.
You get threads set up in your honour accusing you of disrupting natural cameraderie, if people don't agree with what you say(still running, at over 11,000 posts now!).
You get threads saying "We will not tolerate...".
You get kicked off and have to change your name.
You get people like Dodge accusing you of inciting racial hatred.
All for speaking your mind.
People shouldn't start threads on racial subjects on this forum, because the full range of racial views aren't accepted on this forum.

I'm retiring from this thread, I need a break, its giving me a headache!
I know your sex and ethnic background are important, but they're not important for your career!

"Racial superiority is a mere pigment of the imagination"
As this is a 'politically correct' forum, where only a limited range of views are acceptable, there's no point in having threads like this one.
My own past experience has shown that people aren't allowed to express their minds on topics like this unless their views are nice and pleasing.
Except that many people actually HAVE expressed their views.
Lucky them.

I think you can probably express any opinion that is legal to express, but you might find a lot of people disagree. That's what happens in a debate.
Especially if your view is wrong.
(Just kidding)

Well, no, SoveryTired.

It is a running forum after all. I know there's a multitude of other things discussed, but ... !
