hi all!! didnt get a place in flm ballot,so if i dont get a club entry ill be joining you guys in rotterdam!! anyone found prices for flights hotels etc?
I'm also thinking of entering this as it looks like I've not got into FLM, unless I pull a club place out of the bag!!
In fact I was tempted to put my name down as soon as Brian mentioned you get a pint of lager at the finish. How civilised is that? Fantastic idea!!!
If you are doing it I'd suggest doing it yourself. My boss and I go to the Netherlands often and it works out cheaper travel than a return train to London. If you are a Londoner I think there is a company call VLM who fly from London City Airport to Rotterdam.
If I do this I think I'll stay in Amsterdam (about 1hr on train) or Scheveningen (Netherlands answer to Blackpool, only a bit classier!).
Can't think how to do hyperlinks, so you'll have to cut n paste.
Thought I'd add, it might be difficult to get flight prices at the moment because April is usually summer schedule, and as the winter schedule has only just started.......
hammerite: Thank you. I recently flew from London City Airport to Liverpool on VLM - super service. I too had also noticed that VLM fly direct from LCA to both Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
Was thinking of staying in Rotterdam a few days before and after the race ie 4 or 5 days in total. Then move on to somewhere else for a bit of a family holiday (with wife and two kids aged 11 & 12).
I've heard that Amsterdam though nice during the day can be rowdy at night (stag party tourists). Was told that Hague would be a great choice.
Would appreciate any other suggestions for dutch holiday destinations.
Yep the Hague is very nice, Scheveningen that I mentioned earlier is the seaside part of The Hague really.
Amsterdam is good day and night. It can be rowdy at night if you got to a certain area (bright coloured lights....;-). But Amsterdam is a reasonable sized city so there is still plenty to do.
The only other "touristie" place I know in the Netherlands is around the Ijsselmeer and Markermeer. You've got some nice small towns like Volendam, Edam and Marken. When you think of clogs and the Dutch national dress this is the area it originates from. In fact the Dutch "national dress" is only ever worn in this area.
ooh, I'm tempted by this too, that or rome, decisions, decisions. having run amsterdam but not in italy i would fancy rome, but this seems a more vibrant thread at the moment, choices eh? any other options peeps can think of?
Good place to start is Tripadvisor, gives you hotels, approx price and traveller reviews. Then if you click on a hotel it will point you toward an online agency (eg. travelocity, orbitz, expedia) for bookings.
Samtheman - the other option that is on the radar for me is Lyon, which is also very flat so I'm told. Lyon is where my company head office is so I might be able to get that on the company (although I doubt it!).
To be honset that would swing it. If it's not on the company then I'd do Rotterdam cos I think the Netherlands is such a cool place!! (in a non hilly, must be a boring fell race kind of way!).
A decent dutch hotel company is van der valk, stayed in their hotels lots of times. Also might be worth looking at www.hotels.nl I saw that being advertised by Raymond van Barneveld the other week when I was watching the darts!!!
Hotel: Bilderberg Parkhotel situated in the City Centre. Will stay for a few nights before and after the marathon (5 nights in all). From there the plan is to go on to Hague (as suggested) and spend a few days there before coming back to Rotterdam and flying home.
still tempted but still havnt had a run since i smacked my knee b4 the cardiff mara on antibiotics now cos of foot infection diffivcult to think about doing a 1k never mind a mara
Flights: KLM from Heathrow to Rotterdam (flying out early Sat morning returning Mon night) Hotel: Maritime Hotel - 2 nights (Sat & Sun) Nautically-themed hotel set alongside the River Meuse in the Scheepvaartkwartier district, 20 metres from the Erasmus Bridge.
Hi - will look at booking this at the weekend. Had to drop out of Berlin this year due to a fall resulting in damaged ligament. Need a goal to get me back out there running as I have only done 3 runs in 9 weeks! Not sure whether to go to Heathrow and fly to Rotterdam or Schipol from Birmingham and train to Rots. Will confirm once booked!

Bart

I'll decide in the new year whether I'm entering and what my target will be, although this one is looking favourable!!
