Who only does 2 Marathons a year? By the end of this year I will have run 11 Marathons or Ultras. The 100 Marathon club members would run one every week if they could so we do not want the entry fee to be too much £15 to £20 maximum I would say. Some races charge less than a tenner, give a medal and food after.
I was at Edinburgh this year too - the training wasnt a problem but on the day it was just too hot - can you imagine doing 3-4 months training leading up to an August marathon? The last 2 months when you should be doing your longs runs would, more than likely, be done in stiffling heat.
The more I think about this the more it appears to be for the organisors benefit and no thought is being put into the health and safety of the people who are going to be used as one big advert to promote Liverpool.
Mandie - do you want to step in and organise the marathon yourself ?
The FF Games is a big thing. Thats the only reason theyd be able to get the marathon off the ground. Jeez - if we've lost the Half, then why even bother trying to get a full one ?
I know the weather in this country is not predictable - all I am trying to say is if a marathon was organised at another time of the year then it would attract a lot more people.
Most runners can get round a half marathon but a full marathon is a completely different kettle of fish.
If Liverpool want this to be the big event that they obviously are aiming at then they need to attrach as many people as possible - and I would love to run a full marathon that is a mass event 35 mins up the road from me but if it is to be in August then you can count me out.
Another reason to keep it out of summer if they want it to be a big event is because with it being holiday season there may be quite a few runners away on holiday.
I would rather run a hot marathon at the end of a hot summer than a hot mara after a cool spring. Blackpool Mara was ROASTING in 2005 but a mere 25' this year with very little wind. ( I only did the 1/2 and barely survived both)
Look its very simple - If its going to happen its going to happen in August. The event needs as many supporters as possible.
There's plenty of people who don't run being negative about this potential event. PLEASE PLEASE be positive and lend your support. If you don't want to run it for whatever reason then please offer your support by volunteering to help out/marshal etc.
I would love to run a Liverpool Marathon. I don't care if its 40' on the day and I don't mind if its only a one off to celebrate the capital of culture. And I will have a big party afterwards!
I had an email from Alan Rothwell re the Liverpool Half Marathon 2007 to quote "I don't think the event is in doubt even if London Marathon Company don't stage it" So I gather stuff is still being negotiated!
2008 may seem like a long way away but the proposed marathon needs the support now to get things moving.
Who's side are you on ? Are you going to mention how many race you are doing this year! I am wondering why some of these peeps are bothering with this thread! They are so negative. Except Mr Happy who is one of my best mates (met in Dublin last year). Perhaps some people need to know about the triple eh?

it is fruit loopy to do 11 a year;)
So it would have to be entries on the day for me to do it.
I'd certainly come and support though.

even a soetember marathon can be roasting
last year, Wolverhampton mara was held on th ehottest day of the year

There must be lots of other cultural events lined up in Liverpool's year as City of Culture.
theres also the issue of clashing with established marathons
Lets face it -it is britain.
There are plenty of Ironman events in July/August on the continent - loads hotter usually than the UK. Seems to work ok.
nutters
is a massive pity about the half you know
Wonder what went wrong ?
