Just had a read back. Good running going on - well done to Small and LMH on their races.

Macs - brilliant! Mrs Mac, 40 miles is fantastic, hope you're now back to health. Really well done to Mr Mac.

DG - hope your son's feeling better and none of the rest of you are any worse for it.

PSC - an Ironman! image Fantastic!!!

HY4 - sorry to hear about your walk, but good to get your NVQ done and dusted.  image

LMH - love the bike you're looking at.  Have been running!  image

Mr Bump - Alberto Contador - what a mountain climber!!!  Lance is still there in second place, but Bradley Wiggins in third place and what a nice bloke Bradley is - was listening to him on ITV4.  image

Clag - welcome back from a great holiday.  image

DG - well done Master DG.  Now listen to Mummy and get better soon.  image

Elspeth - enjoy the gardening.  image

VR and Sparkly - any news yet?  image

Went out running earlier and am chuffed to bits - 4.09 miles at 50 mins - 12:13 mm at 74% HRM.  Six seconds faster per mile than last week and 10 mins longer running and still in rehab - wonder for how much longer?  Bike ride tomorrow - fancy doing that 33 mile course to see what can be done on my own.  Did some weight training after the run and finished doing situps and was lying down watching end of Tour de France and fell asleep image, but must have needed it.  image

    Flossie,

It's not done & dusted yet.  The maths & english test are due in September however if I get the other bits finished it means I've got more time for the tests/revision especially the maths because I'm useless at maths and feel as though I need a bucket of peroxide to dip my hair into.  We have 2 teachers for the key skills a maths specialist & english specialist.  The maths one is brilliant and you can tell when the english one teaches us maths because she doesn't push us and steers us more towards english in the session.  So I tend to prefer the sessions with the maths teacher.  She spent about 30 min going thru long division/working out percentages by hand and this was in addition to the 10-15 min she spent taking the whole group thru it.

Clag- i just googled the place you went to in Holland and it looks really good. We might look at going there the last week in August. Was the accomodation any good? Being half dutch, i feel very at home in Holland.

HY4- i suppose anything moer than a mile or so is a long walk if your hubby is not used to exercising.

Elspeth- welcome back. We missed you. LOL at your children's comments. Just remember that they may have youth on their side but you are wiser and richer than themimageI acn't believe you managed a 14 miler after 2 weeks off!

DG- glad to hear your son is better. Sounds like he bounced back quickly.

LMH- did you do any decorating? We spent the whole of yesterday painting our living room in preparation for when our new sofa arrives next week.

Can't wait to hear all the race reports from todays runners

Bumpy- i am loving all yout TDF stories! Makes me look at it all in a different light when i watch it. I have been following it every day but have no idea how it all works. Seems very complicated.

I have decided not to do Berlin in Septimage I have been really busy at work recently and loads going on with chidren and schools etc, etc. I have been so stressed and busy that i haven't had time to eat enough and this has meant i haven't had the energy to do the training. I have still been running 3 times a week but not far enough. This week i have been suffering from  physical stress symptoms- headache, swollen glands and fatigue. So my body is telling me something.

It would also be a very expensive trip after paying for flights and accomodation and i only want to run it if i can do a decent time. So, i am 95 euros down for the entry fee but at least we hadn't gone as far as booking flights. I am feeling relieved now that i have taken the decision but also feel like a total failure for not doing itimage. I keep telling myself that i can't do everything and i am afraid that at the moment family and work have to come before running.

I have entered 2 half marathons instead- henfield in Sept and Barns Green in Nov. I also need to start training for Brighton marathon in 4 months time.

Flossie- are you feeling any better. I feel like that at the moment too. I must remember to take my HR when i wake up.

LB- If i were you i wouldn't worry too much about trying to run when you are on hols. I would take your trainers as you might really feel like going for a little run. But don't stress about it if you don't, the rest will probably do you goood. When we went to Turkey in May, i found it too hot to run- the heat just drained my energy.

    SiJ,

I've got to disagree there!  Chris is the kind of person who is built for endurance.  He did a 16 mile hike with very little training (about 2 sessions of an hour) and has been able to get within about 5-7 min of me when we've done a 4.5 mile race before (with absolutely no training).  I think was the case of he didn't want to do it and threw a mardy.

HY4 - sorry to hear you're not that keen on Maths.  It can be very exciting and fun with the right teacher - one of our teachers is like a mad Professor and the kids adore her.  I love Maths and am starting my Maths Degree in October - must be barking!  image

SiJ - feeling heaps better thanks and ran today.  Taking a step down to a half marathon is not failure and better to do that than enter a marathon under prepared like I did for FLM and trash yourself.  Will be doing the New Forest Half Marathon end of September and that was a step down from a marathon.  Family and work are very important to me too and the running is R&R and makes me happy. image

  • Options

    HY4 - sounds like a typical bloke!

SiJ - you are not a failure, turning up knowing that you were unprepared or trying to marathon train when your heart isn't in it would both be silly things to do, deciding to focus on something shorter whilst you have so much family and work stuff going on is a pragmatic, sensible decision. It's supposed to be fun!

No decorating done, it's not the doing the decorating that's the problem really it's all the preparation. However my bathroom and kitchen floors got a much needed mop and there's gooseberry crumble for pudding image

Flossie - it's great to see your progress. Really must persuade you to try triathlon with all this biking. Mixing the swimming in too can only help the rehab.

DG - I hope that the effort doesn't set him back too much, as you say, a valuable lesson and if he's learnt it at his age it will stand him in good stead if he does go on to compete.

Clag - I'd do a long run of 12 miles one week and 14 the next, a tempo run of up to 6 miles and an interval session - mile reps -  if I were trying to improve my half time off three runs a week.

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • Options
Er, hi everyone, this is probably a daft question but I was just wondering if it still possible to get a copy of the marathon training programme?

SiJ - Sounds like you're making the right choice about Berlin but must be disappointing too, it can all get a bit stressful trying to fit everything in - and that's with older kids! Certainly found Europe and Denmark very expensive with the exchange rate at the minute.Though 95 euro to enter seems a lot.

As for the 14 miles - it wasn't too pretty, pretty slow paces by the end.

LMH - I must apologise, I was meant to be finding out about Orkndy half IM for you. It seems that this year they are doing an OW standard distance instead - last weekend in August - so may not be far enough to consider the journey. Should have found out for you long agoimage

Have heard from VR, don't think she met SB, sounds like she had a good day but was with an injured friend for the second half.

LB - If you're injured holiday may be a good time for a rest, must say I have to admire you all for running in the heat after recent holiday, certainly makes it harder.

    Hoofin,

You need to find a post by Shades then click email member and ask nicely for a training plan.

    LMH,

About sums him up at times.

    Flossie,

The best thing is that I want to get better at maths which is one of the main reasons I decided to do the NVQ!  The main bulk of it seems a complete waste of time to me.  Perhaps if I didn't have my particular style of doing my job and was newer to call centres I would have a different perspective on it.  Still it's nearly done.

LMH - Gooseberry crumble - mmmimage. I was going to bake but forgot to get eggs at the shops, quite a few ripe raspberries and blackcurrants outside though.

Had to defrost freezer yesterday due to son leaving door open while we were away so trying to use up anything salvagable - fish pie for us tonight.

LMH - am quickly seeing how sensible this triathlete training is and how balanced it can make you and super fit.  Don't know about an event for a while, but know from years ago that it was endurance that seemed the best fit.  image

Little Miss - Yes, I did a long bike ride, but it was evtful - more on this below.  Hope you're not sickenning for something btw.  Now, that bike.  That is a lovely bike.  Approx. £1200 isn't it.  Full carbon and 105 throughout (or is there Ultegra as well?).  You'll certainly go faster on that.  I think themen's equivalent is the Tarmac Comp.  BTW, why did you need new wheels for your current bike?

LIverbird - It is interesting what you say about the achilles problem being not so much of a problem in a different pair of shoes.  May I suggest overpronation could be the problem?  Have you had your gait analysed......recently?

Flossie - Yes, shocking re: Oscar Freire, and the other rider whose name I forget being shot by an airgun.  So, it looks like France has chav problems as well!  Now, didn't it "kick off" today.  Contador was impressive.  It could be Game Over for everyone else.  did you see the look of imperial scorn he gave to the select group before he made his escape.  Interesting that Armstrong didn't go up the road after him, anf him and Andreas Kloden provided cover.  And for Bradley Wiggins to be sitting in there amongest all that "royalty" well, I'm very impressed.  I like the way Wiggins presents himself.  He is very good post-race too, whereas I don't particularly warm to Mark Cavendish.  I find him arrogant and petulant, and just a few days after him saying in the press that he doesn't like the French, well what does he expect when a decision goes against him when he was adjudged to have blocked Thor Hushovd.  Although saying that, I thought Cav did try and force the God of Thunder into the barriers.  You only had to see Hushovd's reaction.

Well done on your run by the way and enjoy the bike ride tomorrow - no doubt you will be emulating Alberto Contador on the hills around Bournemouth.

HY4 - LOL, re: your trip to the park!!  And good on you for doing the NVQ.

DG - Well done Master DG!

Si-J - Cycling can be complicated, and no only with what is happening on the road.  great stage today, nothing of note happening and then it all kicks off in the final 10km.  And you can see how quickly gaps can open up on a major mountain climb like that.

I think you've done the right thing about Berlin and I echo what others have said.  Brave decision by you.  Well done.

    Elspeth - Oops!

Evening!  Flossie you were right, I started at 9.45 but without VR.  They had staged starts at 15 minute intervals between 9.30 and 10.30 for over 5 hours people and 10 till 10.30 for sub 5.  You had to tell them at registration when you were starting and I got there just after 9 because I gave up trying to sleep at 6.30.  VR arrived closer to 9.30 by which time there was a big queue so I don't know what time she set off.  Anway ...... to the report:

Decided that as the forecast was for showers I would wear vest, shorts and hat but leave the jacket behind. The theory was that I would dry off in between the wet bits and it worked fine for the first few downpours but as the last was around 24/25 miles I finished in rather a soggy state.

Last year I had High5 gels with me that demanded water and as my gel regime didn't fit with the checkpoint I carried my Camelbak. This time round I had SiS gels so didn't need to. Because of this I decided not to rush through the checkpoints but take time to drink and maybe try a bit of bread pudding.

This change of strategy meant that I only used 3 gels as having picked up a couple of boiled sweets at the first checkpoint I didn't bother with a 5 mile gel but had it at checkpoint 2 instead and as that seemed to have worked I carried on like that with the addition of a small bit of bread pudd at checkpoint 5. I now know that I can make 2 boiled sweets last around 4 miles in total
    http://www.fetcheveryone.com/images/icons/icon_smile.gif

Legs were getting quite sore around 17/18 miles but a very sharp downpour, the sight of villagers at a fete sheltering in a portaloo plus the added entertainment of Dunstable Road Runners losing their map reader seemed to act as a timely distraction.

I did walk up a couple of hills and the miles were getting slower by the end but I wasn't reduced to the 100 paces run/100 paces walk that I ended up doing last year.

Finished around 12 minutes quicker that last year (5.16) so this race is no longer my marathon PW. In fact it comes very close to my time for London
    http://www.fetcheveryone.com/images/icons/icon_shock.gif

Factor in the 17 minutes that SportTracks says I was stopped for and we actually have just sub 5 in terms of actual time spent running
    http://www.fetcheveryone.com/images/icons/icon_smile.gif

Great value race with free hot drinks before/after plus a free barbecue and checkpoints with lots of goodies.  I did hang around and watch for VR but had to leave for home in the end.

Taking The Teen out for a curry tonight, I think a celebratory drink may be in order

73 miles for me today at 15.9mph average, but that doesn't tell half of the story.  I was exploring a potential route into Lincolnshire to find some flat roads, but it means going over a couple of hills in the Wolds.  Anyway, 20 miles out a car over took another car which was coming towards me and it doing so threw up a couple of stones, both of which hit me on the arm, quite painfully.  So, I have blood trickling down my arm, and it hurts!.  Over the biggest hill and on the descent I reached......wait for it...... 42.4mph  image (a new record for me)  image.  Anyway, the ride was going really well.  I was flying, going through 30 miles at over 17 mph average, and then it dawned on me, there must be a strong following wind.  There was.  OMG, I then was into a headwind for much of the return journey.  36.5 miles into a headwind for 90% of the time.  And then it rained....heavily......with hail.  Ouch, ouch, ouch.  Fortunately the rain washed the blood off my arm!

Bridget - I think a celebratory drink is very much in order.  Well done you.  Great running!

Mr Bump - well done on excellent ride today and ouch and double ouch for flying stones and hail stones - you needed a suit of armour today.  Makes you realise how important sunglasses are when out riding.  BTW have you got a computer on your bike - would love to know how fast I go downhill and am always in front - NO BRAKING!!!!  Alberto was magnificent today, totally superior to the rest of the field.  If he carries on in this vein for the mountain stages, the others are going to have a job catching up with his overall time on the flats.  Bradley Wiggins is lovely.  Mark Cavendish can't expect to get away with saying that he doesn't like the French when riding in the Tour de France and yesterday was definitely "what comes around goes around" for him - a very arrogant young man with a lot to learn.  Tomorrow shall be riding the 33 miler around the harbour towards Corfe Castle and hills to the ridge of Studland and downwards.  Flossette is on a music course until Thursday evening and Mummy's very busy with her training.  When she comes back, I have to go to Chessington Zoo/Theme Park and also see Ice Age 3, but will survive very well because I ordered the tickets quite happily.  Hee hee!!!  However, Flossette has recently been on a wild and woolly trip with her schoolgirl friends to Thorpe Park and went on Saw, Stealth, Nemesis and some other horror and expects me to do the same in the not too distant future.  image  Guess I will survive like everything else.  image

Sparkly - many congratulations on a fabulous time for your marathon today.  Well done.  Enjoy that curry.  image

Si J - we stayed with Keycamp. The accomodation was fine as the weather was good. We opted for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom place which was great as it meant I didn't have to go near the boys bathroom. We have booked direct with Duinrell in the past and their duingalows (think we booked comfort plus) and it was really nice and much more spacious inside. Unfortunately because of the exchange rate with the euro this year it was cheaper to go keycamp. There are lots of choices - Keycamp, Eurocamp, Selectcamp, Thomsons, Canvas - and it's a nice, family friendly site. Feels very safe and we were happy to let the boys loose on their own for a few hours at a time (they're 15 and 10 now). The other good thing about it is that you get two hours free each day at the swimming pool/flume park, and free access to the amusement park every day (10-6) which is a godsend in the current climate! It's also nice that the amusements shut down for the evening as it means there's not a battle. There are also quite a few playparks around the site that are nice for the younger ones. image

Bridget - well run, enjoy your well earned curry.

Mr Bump - loving the new speed record!

Elspeth - no worries! Thanks for finding out, definitely too far to travel for an oly I'm afraid.

Bridget - well done, hope the curry is good.

Mr B - I was out for a couple of hours today but thankfully had a brake problem that meant I was in the LBS when the downpour came. Haven't had new wheels - they would just be the next upgrade if I wanted to tweak the bike to go faster rather than losing weight or training more myself! Nice man in the LBS suggested the Ruby Comp as better value than new wheels on old bike - this would also leave me current bike to use through the winter and carbon frame jobbie for racing. Still undecided, I don't believe in buying myself a few seconds when I can find them through training though I will most likely have the cheapest bike in transition in Prague I will take a certain amount of pleasure in overtaking these same people on the run image

    Hi Hoofin!

Flossie - I'll never be fast but boy can I keep going - sounds as though you're the same. I'll see you on the start line one day.

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Bridget - Well done, sounds like quite a nice race image We had staged starts at CW and it was quite nice as people coming the other way all the time.

Mr Bump - Ouch indeed, a tough but speedy ride for you.

Flossie - Thanks.  If I'd have got hit in the face with the stone I'd have looked a bit of a mess I think!  I do have a bike computer (thanks to Little Miss who gave me her old one) but I haven't got round to fitting it yet because I'm looking for some stick on pads for the sensor to stop it slipping down the fork.  I've been using my temperamental GPS which when it works is accurate - like it was today - but it will cut out for no apparent reason and won't restart and the only way to get it working again is to switch off and start all over again (and lose your data!)

I agree with you that Cav has a lot to learn.  I don't like the way he conducts himself.  Yes, I know he is the fastest sprinter at the moment and yes he has a classic win on his palmares (Milan-San Remo earlier this year) but to be a un homme du Tour I believe you need to be noble in defeat and show respect to others when you win.

Now, I'm happy to go fast down a descent, but I am very scared on theme park rides.  It's the feeling of having no control that does it.  I hope Flossette's course goes well and that you have a great time together when she returns.

Clag - Thank you.  It felt quite safe as the road was in good condition.

HY4 - Thanks.  The arm is a little sore and swollen, but it will be ok, I'm sure.

Little Miss - Decent new wheels will set you back at least £200 I would have thought.  That's how much those Roval wheels I bought for the cobbles cost.  If you can afford it, I'd say buy it....providing it fits of course!  There is of course though a certain amount of pleasure that can be obtained though in beating the competition on an inferior bike - not that your current bike is inferiror.  I remember after I'd been to support PSC at a triathlon in Stratford-upon-Avon, and I'd parked my car about 10 miles away.  Anyway, riding back someone on a Specialized Tarmac Expert overtook me and didn't even say hello, which I thought I was rather rude.  He didn't look that fit, and I soon got across to his wheel and I sat there...and sat there...and sat there.  And try as he might he couldn't get rid of me.  He was on a £2500 bike, I was on 15 year old Giant that cost me £300 at the time!

    LMH - ditto that.  image

Mr Bump - really loathe those crazy rides as last time needed to see a chiropractor when I got back because of the sheer terror, stress and tension experienced.  Absolutely hate them and try to close eyes very tight and think of England, but will not wimp out.   Agree with you totally about lack of control being very much part of it.  Not only did Flossette go on all those rides at Thorpe Park, she also stood under an open shelter to make sure she got drenched every so often by the ride called "Tidal Wave".  Her teacher, who is very elegant, took one look at her at the end of the day and said:  "oh L, just look at you, you're drenched right through!"  Flossette replied:  "no problem, Mum supplied me with a set of dry clothes to travel home in!"  Bless her, she really is like me, such a tomboy!  image

Off to bed now.  Nite nite.  image

Little Miss - Forgot to say.  How fortunate to have a LBS open on a Sunday to whom you can pop in if you hit mechanical trouble on a ride.

Elspeth - I like the staged start too.  It meant I was rarely on my own after the first few miles as either I was being caught or I was doing the catching (there were walkers too who'd started earlier still)

LB - I would rest up and do lots of achilles stretches while you're on holiday, achilles tendonitis can be very difficult to get rid of so the sooner the better

Clag - I've never heard of a 10 mile tempo run, too far. Find a schedule and amend it to your paces but some good long runs at LSR pace will build your endurance.

DG - well done to Master DG

SiJ - you've entered New Forest too haven't you?   Switch to the half as it would be great to meet you there.

    LMH - gooseberry crumble, divine

Hoofin - drop me an email, I have a backlog but will deal with it in a couple of days

    Mr Bump - great cycling

Bridget - well done at FV.   I had a few texts from VR, don't think she enjoyed the event much

4.35 miles for me today after 3 days rest for my achilles niggle. Still have a little twinge but better than it was, will have to see how this week's training goes and then decide about Faversham on Saturday.

Just popping in after a week in Northumberland - just finished reading back.

Not much running over the last week, except for Lyke Wake at the beginning of our hol - joined my pal Sheila for the last 24 miles (actually more running than walking due to lumpy/boggy terrain, not that that bothered the fell-runners at the front) . Was really glad to be there and enjoyed the day after nearly missing it, due to messing up my eye at swimming the week before (eye OK now)

Congrats SB on yesterday, sounds likeyou had a good time (pun intended) despite rain

LMH - I tried the Ruby in our LBS last year (not to buy, just to check fit of the much much cheaper Dolce I was about to order!). A lovely bike.

Agree with everything that's been said about Cav but hopefully he will learn to be a bit less arrogant and sulky (or at least to keep a lid on his feelings when interviewed). Super-impressed with Contador and Bradley Wiggins.

    Hi All!

Quite an eventful day yesterday. Saw Bridget at the start and she's right she started at 9.45 and I started at 10am with the Dunstable Road Runners plus others,

Managed to keep up with them up until 12 miles. Then got dropped and ran with a guy so we read the instructions together.

Got lost a few times then he got a calf injury at 18 miles so I stayed with him and walked the rest of the way following walkers so we didn't get lost as it was clear we we both useless at following the instructions.

I think we finished in 6. 25 I was so glad to see Butler waiting at the end, poor man, actually he did help at one of the earlier checkpoints as the check point man was on his own trying to cope with drinks as well. So Butler was a welcome sight (saw him on a road section later as well) The guy I was running with thought Butler was a Steward and couldn't work out why I kept chatting to him everytime we saw him.

Anyway glad I've got the July marathon out the way and finaly back home
I think I prefer being told where to go with Marshells round the course and big yellow arrows stuck in the hedges image

Well Done Bridget your once PW is now my PW!

I'll read back later but now going to watch the recorded TdF from yesterday, Blissimage
