Shades - Glad to read you got the £80 sorted, but it is out of order that Travelodge aren't sorting it out for you without you having to write.

    Bobo - Hi.

    Liverbird - Enjoy U2.

    -------------------

I got sandblasted at the beach yesterday!  I also managed a short run, no more than 1½ miles, along the beach.  That's running 2 days consecutively, what's going on!!

You're being sucked back in Mr Bump - that's what! image

I reckon Master Bump might have liked all those dinosaurs last night....image

At the beach Mr B? I envy you - the one thing that I don't like about living here is being so far from the sea.

LB - drop today's run, rest the achilles, do it Monday if it's stopped grumbling. GET ANOTHER PHYSIO APPOINTMENT ASAP! I'm jealous of you going to see U2 too. Hope you have a great time.

Busy day for me - have walked Grace, been to docs for bloods, collected repeat script and had hair trimmed. Now waiting on a phone call then it's an hour run followed by lunch and Asda. Off to friends for the weekend this evening though back by Sunday lunch to fit a bike ride in. Must be mad.

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Had a great holiday thanks to those who asked. Was very relaxed on returning but now absolutely knackered again. Our 6 year old (7 next week) has suddenly taken to waking up in the middle of the night. He is having a lot of bad dreams and then wanting us to stay with him until he goes back to sleep. It is weird because he has also suddenly over the last few months lost a lot of his confidence (he used to be super confident and sociable). He is still very sociable but is over-analysing things suddenly and starting to say he is rubbish at things. He has announced he wants to give up rugby because he is rubbish at it (he isn't - he is in the middle in terms of ability). He is the shortest and slightest boy of his friends and in his class and I think he has become very conscious of that.

did a couple of short runs on holiday - problems with feet still - am starting to wonder if I will ever get into running again

haven't picked up the bike since I got back eitherimage

  • Options

BBS - double check he's not being bullied and is worrying about going back to school in a couple of weeks. He may well just be an over analyser, but it's worth making sure that there's nothing going on first.

LMH - just been given the number of a physio who has helped a very good runner friend of mine and they're in this area so I'll call them later - I promise!

Kids have just left. Know how Elspeth feels now....image

  • Options

BBS - echo what LB said, firstthing that popped into my mind was 'is he being bullied?'

LB - let's hope they can see you quickly.

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • Options

LMH - I hope so too. I was rather hoping for an appointment next week!

The mileage is about to ramp up....image

Plead your case and play on the marathon training LB. In my experience they often have a couple of emergency appointments that they usually keep for regulars but if they're not taken you might talk yourself into one of them. I know my fizz will do early or late appointments outside of her normal working day if really needed.

Enjoyed my run today. I'm off to a friends for the weekend so rest day tomorrow (should have been today) and then home in time for a two hour bike on Sunday.

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Thanks LB/LMH - we thought of that first too but he says he is really looking forward to going back to school and he says nothing is worrying him. Think I said, he did really well in his SATs so looks like he is going to be good academics wise and seems to have sussed this is his strength - just seems to be doubting himself because of the sport.

He loves football and has been in a league over the summer and his team have lost every game (most of them, other team got double digits and they scored 0!) but it is an under 8s league and other teams are all a year older than them (bearing in mind Matthew is a 29 August baby so not even quite yet!), so not sure if that has something to do with it.

Forgot to say he had a sleepver at his friends last night and they brought him home because he didn't want to stay - he has always loved sleepovers so that too is odd. He says it was because he didn't want to sleep in the attic and that he would miss Mum and Dad too much. All very odd for him.

Anyway, I guess we just have to keep a close eye.

    Popping in briefly...

Sorry to her of son's worries BBS, hope he's back to his confident self soon, not a parent myself, full of admiration for those who are!

Seem to be assuming reverse-role parenting for my two oldies...hope Mum will come home next week to intermediate care, trying to get everything sorted at their home, big thing will be getting them to accept carers coming in...think first few days will be tricky as they adjust ,poor things. Still, Mum appears to be very lucky to making a slow but steady recovery - looking around the orthopaedic ward it is all to evident that many old ladies with hip fracture don't go back home to semi-independent life (or don't go home full stop).

Still managing to get some running in, keeping it slow and enjoyable image Have a good weekend all

Liverbird - I think Little Mr Bump would indeed have liked those dinosaurs.

Little Miss - Well, due to the traffic it did take nearly 3 hours to get to the beach I chose, but still, it was nice to go to the beach again.

BBS - I was thinking the same as the others re: your son.  hope youcan get to the root cause soon.

Sluggie - I remember the "battle" we had with my Grandma when she had to go into a care home.  Once she got there though, she really liked it.  Hope everything works out ok.

Today I took Little Mr Bump to see Grand Prix cars in a museum and then we went up a "mountain" - well, that's what he described it as, anyway!  Little Miss Bump didn't want to come on this trip......

    Shades,

It's 7 September & a 5k.  I was planning a 10k at the beginning of October but have changedmy mind with how things have been over the year so far.

    LB,

I remember wanting to slaughter my 5k pb off the back of marathon training so I can understand what you're saying about Dublin.  Enjoy U2.  Hope you can into the physio soon.

    Mr Bump,

Cool, bet the beach run was enjoyable. Where were the GP cars?  Was that at Donnington?

    BBS,

Hope your son is back to his usual self soon.

    Sluggie,

Hope things go okay with your mum next week.

HY4 - Yes, it was Donington.  And yesterday's beach run was good too.

    Look what I got! image

Had my gait reanalysed and it seems I am NOT a ridiculous severe overpronator. I do have a few biomechanical issues that require a shoe with some stability, but not motion control or anything like that! And they're not causing the achilles problem either by the looks of things......image I took my trusty Mizunos with me to the shop to let them have a look, as examining your old shoe gives clues as to what you're doing wrong apparently! The Mizunos were a good shoe for me and although they've clocked up 450 miles, they still have a small amount of life left in them...image

Next stop fizz and we'll get me sorted and back out pounding those pavements.image

    Shades,

Got the date wrong it's 6 September.  7th is when the car's going in for MOT.

    Mr Bump,

You must have travelled a bit to get to the beach!  I thought you'd gone on holiday somewhere (not that I'm knocking holidaying at home - because did that in June which was all arranged before we knew we were going to America in November).

Mr Bump is in Leicestershire! He is almost slap bang in the middle of the country! image

    LB,

I'd be surprised if it was any less than about 1hr 45min away from the beach.

Poor Mr Bump! I can get to the beach in about half an hour.image

That's the only problem with the midlands it's quite landlocked.  I think the nearest to him would be on the east coast in particular East Anglia (sp)

Ours would probably be North Wales or maybe New Brightonimage

HY4 / Liverbird - The nearest beach is 2 hours away on a good day!  Yes, i've been on leave from work for 2 weeks, as has Mrs Bump.  Apart from the wedding/Legoland trip we've been doing days out.

Liverbird - Your shoes look really nice.  I'm pleased you got the gait checked again.  Did they use a video camera?

    ----------------

Had a friend come round for a drink tonight with me & Mrs Bump.  I've somehow agreed to go running with my friend tomorrow morning!  OMG, I'm now running three times a week again!!

  • Options

I told you, you were getting sucked in again Mr B!

Yes, they used a video camera for the gait, complete with zoom and slow motion so I could see precisely how I strike. I was born with a congenital hip defect and although it has never been a problem for me really, I have an extremely wide hip swing on the right and whenever they try to teach people in our gym about gait assessment, they always seem to think I must have a terrible running style and instantly focus on the hip!! When the foot swings back in and strikes, it actually hits the ground neutrally! image The other foot rolls in and any hip pain I get is always in the left, as it overcompensates. Had a sore hip for a few days now and it's stopping me sleeping. Not slept for three days more than about 3 hours at a time and I'm exhausted.image

Off to Cardiff in a bit for the concert. Tomorrow I am going shopping in Birmingham, but I seriously doubt I'll be on a big splurge as there was a shock clearout of contractors at Mr LB's work yesterday and all his friends lost their jobs with four weeks notice (despite having contracts till next March)image

Mr LB dodged the axe (mostly because he makes sure he is involved in everything so nobody else can easily fill his shoes) but it was a timely reminder that the world of contract employment is a very volatile one and whilst they may get paid more than permanent staff, they are never EVER secure in their posts and can be swept aside in minutes after being with a company for years. I know nobody's job is particularly safe at the moment, but there are no contract jobs out there in Mr LB's field at all, as his work is highly specialised and although he's extremely good at what he does and has never struggled to get a contract, I don't think we've ever seen a market like this before either! image

BBS - I hope BBS Jnr is back to his usual self soon

Sluggie -  good news that your Mum is recovering and hopefully they will get used to having some outside care without any problems.

HY4 - not long until your race then

LB - congrats on the new shoes, they look lovely, what model are they?

    Have a lovely weekend.

Came home from work last night and sat down to watch the athletics, it was raining in Berlin so waiting for them to start I fell asleep on the sofa.   woke up an hour later and had dinner and never got time to get onto computer.  All this training is making me tiredimage

Another 8 miles this morning.   Busy day today, lots to do as I'm away in Ireland next weekend and there's the WC men's marathon to watch too.

Shower now then off to Tesco

    Shades,

No not long at all.  I don't think I'm beginning to get nervous but I'm beginning to think about it more.

    LB,

Fingers crossed for Mr LB's job.  Have you tried yoga?  That's starting to sort me out.

    Mr Bump,

Excellent.  I find I can run more when I'm on holiday as well, however resisted temptation in June because I didn't want to over do it.

Back to work this week hence not being around much - it's exhausting!

LB - like the new shoes. I must invest in new shoes sometime soon. Not convinced I want to go for the Nimbus again as they're pretty expensive if I'm not doing the mileage I was previously.

Having a re-think re races. B's still out of action due to knee injuries and the physio is not convinced that he'll be running again unless he wants to suffer more. Think it's some sort of sideways movement in the knee that's causing the problem and having done stretches for 2 months every day for half an hour, although improving it's not up to par yet. We're like ships that pass in the night with me out running and him having the kids so need to try to get more time together!

Swithering re Moray Half. Delighted you're going up Elspeth. When do you go and how are you getting there?

Will definitely do something but considering asking to drop back to 10k as not been getting in the training I'd planned. Prior to starting proper 'training' 5 weeks ago, I've only managed a 10, 12 and 14 miler and the 14 felt pretty hard despite being about 90 secs per mile slower thatn I would really be hoping to race. Not convinced I'll manage to get the long one in this weekend as heading up the road today, but have another 14 and 10 planned for the 2 weeks before. My rep times have been good, but finding the tempos hard when I even attempt them (did manage 4 miles at tempo pace this week) so wondering do I go for a good 10k time or settle for a mediocre half? Decisions! I'm so bad at them!!!

    Clag,

    I think I'd go for a good 10k time.

    Morning image

busy day here too - run done; PSC currently swimming; Canterbury here we come - the trunk needs  restocking, I can avoid the lure of the name-tapes no longer image

BBS - sorry to hear Matthew is unsettled; boys are sensitive little souls and I've found that even a throw-a-way remark can cause a confidence crisis. Rising 8 was a difficult time for H too - school (and probably us!) were repeatedly telling him he was growing up; several friends had already lost Father Christmas; over night crying became a social faux pas; the blame factor set in on the games field. I have a very strong image of a little boy telling me he didn't want to grow up and wanted kisses and cuddles for ever - sigh. Just let Matthew know you understand and try to encourage him to talk.

Shades - athletic junkies here too!

Mr Bump - have a good run with your friend...running is indeed addictive, I should know...having run 9 times in the last 6 days and I may do another run today tooimage.   No wonder my washing machine is on every day.

HY4 - it's good to think about forthcoming races as long as it's part of the race planning - to panic is not good

Clag - sorry to hear about B's ongoing running injury, that's a long time to be doing physio's stretches with only some progress.

Re Moray, I with HY4 on this one, go for a good 10k and target a half marathon later in the year.   Re your shoes, I wouldn't skimp on cost (as you could end up at the physio too) but trawl the internet and buy last year's model at much cheaper prices.

bo-bo - Wow I bet those few weeks have flown by so quickly.   I can't believe that in these days of high tech nothing has yet replaced the name tags?   Bit like the safety pins for attaching race numbers.

PO for some euros, library and shopping down town for me, DVD is recording marathon which I'll watch later.  I don't suppose we've got any British runners in the marathon?

Might not be back on line until tomorrow
