I absolutely loved my first long distance race last year (the Outlaw) but had had a guts full of long training sessions by the end so was going to give IM races a miss for a year or two and concentrate on Oly's and HIMs.
IM Wales sounds too good to miss though and Mrs Hotpants has given me a green light so I guess I'll see you at the start line!
yep jonny politics aside it was a truly great race last year and a lot of that was down to the (tough) course and the support so no matter who is running it I am sure the locals will still get behind it in a massive way and hopefully the course will not change
Hi folks, just adding myself to the list, as well as "The Silent Assassin" (& removing Ultra Ironwolf, who I can see from above has sadly had to pull out).

Sorry for barging in like this asking for advice. I'm something of a newbie (read I have no idea what's going on) and have just paid up lots of lovely money for a spot at IMW. 30 weeks to go was last weekend, so I've now got my "let's get serious" hat on.
I've read a few of last year's race reports, and I understand that the course is a tad bumpy. Now unfortunately I live in London which is not renowned for its hills, so does anyone have any idea how to train for a hilly course when everything around you is pancake flat (and yes I did use that word because it's pancake day)?!
nedrick - simple - get out into the North Downs or Chilterns (depends where in London you live) to get the lumpy miles in. there are enough hills in those 2 locations to mimic what IMW will throw at you. and do lots of them to get used to the fatigue that hills provide.
there are 2 very steep hills at IMW but both are short so it's "dig in and hang on" for those, but there are lots of other hills that do the damage to the legs. if you ain't going up, you're going down and as soon as you're down, you're going up again - there are few flat sections where you can get a rest and certainly not in the latter 2/3rds of the bike.
there are quite a few from this forum who do regular(ish) group rides around the North Downs so you might want to join in with one or 2 of those. alternatively, enter some hilly sportives to get the training in
Hi nedrick, to add to FBs advice, I would recommend getting down to The Long Course Weekend in June if poss. It's run by the folks who ran IMW last year and the swim and bike are on the same course as IMW. It really helped knowing what was coming on race day.
Was it really? I thought I had a couple more weeks before I had to start worrying that I wasn't following a proper plan . With the way my summer's structured, I'll have to settle for Base stuff until my wife does Outlaw, and then a 12-week push to be ready for Tenby. Should be right.
I pinged IMW an email asking when they would start putting the confirmed entry list up on the web site .. largely because there something reassuring about seing your name on the list .. and helps bring home the fact that its time to get properly engaged with training . Their respone
We will put the entries online as soon as the race has sold out – it won’t be long now!
so if to be believed then it implies its nearly full
I am doing the LCW as Outlaw prep and so OH (slower) can recce and give his training a good start.
My plan is swim and bike tha a gentle run on the Sunday. TBH, I am worried about the bike breaking me physically and mentally as it looks to be up a few levels than Outlaw.
Camping with kids and family at Rowston, New Hedges, Tenby (tel 01834 842 178) if anyone is looking around.
Cant make the LCW, but am interested in the The Eirias that someone mentioned earlier
I'm signed-up for The Hairy Arse, SA. I think Cona is too. Don't know if i can help you with your arrangements at all, but i'll see you at your DIY Half and maybe chat then.
I won't really have done anything beyond base stuff by LCW, so I'll do the full swim, have a go at the full bike and then eat chips through a straw on the Sunday, talking about "junk running miles" or something that bluffs me through doing nothing.

Morning all!

Look forward to seeing you at LCW, Pingu.
Slower, look forward to seeing you there too, I haven't actually signed up yet, but have good intentions too. It falls in nicely with Outlaw training.

problem is its the same day as little ones birthday so not sure how I get round this one at the moment.
