How does everyone log their rund? Is it just on garmin or do you keep a blog / journal / something else? I need to start keeping teak of my workouts but can't decide on the best format!
I'll do your 9 miles YM if you do my 10 hour shift at work..........Its going to be one very long day..........And its a lovely bright, autumn day here too and I have to spend all day inside.........it'll be dark when I escape again........
Morning chums and chumesses. Happy to say ATM that my race fees are covered up to 70EUR per event, for as many races as I like. It's paid for by the work's subsidised running club. I've been working for this new company for 20 months now - this week moved into the smart new flex-desk offices. So I don't have a place of my own anymore, but there are loads of different themed work areas to choose from. Right now I am in the vintage library. The forest park and lakes are just 400m away now. Sometimes I have to pinch myself that I get paid for this. Not like being in the auto industry... Will try to get to the gym this lunchtime to keep some semblance of fitness.
think I might be going negative on the stool chart if that is possible..... Fair to say local cuisine here is playing havoc with my delicate constitution

We've got a sweatshop themed work area at my place.
Emmy - I wish it was spam, it's my rowing club's idea.
Eggy - how's it going?
Holeymoley - I use a diary as well as the Garmin website. I've got a little A6 sized one with a page a day. All the info I get from the Garmin goes into it, including pace for each mile, plus other stuff like swimming, amount of sleep I've had, resting heart rate and my weight, when I start using a new pair of shoes and core exercises I've done. At the back there's a year planner in which I stick the total mileage so I can get a quick look at what I've been doing each week. Basically, I add in anything that might be useful to look back on. I don't tend to use the Garmin website to review stuff as it's quicker to flip back and forth in a diary.
Holeymoley. I use Garmin for my runs but I also have a little spreadsheet that I update with my stats that also doubles as a running diary. I've also got some graphs that project my marathon time based on my training time (using the Macmillan calculation, I think) and I also trend it to see how my projected time is decreasing.
I scored quite well on the Geek test
DLR - I've changed the battery. I think it must be the contact but I don't want it any tighter as i sometimes feel a bit constricted anyway. My readings were always a bit higher than the calculated values for my age and I don't fancy a full VO2 Max test, so I may just go with how I feel. Shame really, as I'm a major tech head.
Holeymoley, I can't read without specs ...nor run with specs...so the whole Garmin thingy passes me by. I'm now using the Runner's World...US site...link to their new log * The free edition * It's a big improvement on the old one and lets me log my runs and do some basic maths...distances...between any chosen dates. you can also record loads of dats, upload fancy stuff from GPS devices and the like . Do you ever plot your runs on googlemaps or anything? ( There's a mapping tool, too.)
I'm sorry, though, that I abandoned my ' hard copy' spiral notebook...Weedy, one of my friends still reads the running diaries she kept decades ago and gets loads of fun out of remembering her running days...way before t'internet..

And my next question is: do you have any vacancies
ATM - I ended up a guy as well which is a tad worrying... what does it all mean?? I can't read without my specs either now the garmin does have a quite big print display..
Emmy - glad to see you are feeling a bit better... I agree TD can we all join your firm? E70 per race cool... My firm is pretty small so no way would they do that..
Kaz - be gentle on yourself .. go and watch your new TV..
Have signed up for Strava - dont keep a good enough note of my runs - my PT does keep a note of all my run times which is helpful but it would be good to have a better record
Dannir - Skyfall is great - its the first Daniel Craig Bond movie I have seen went off the Bond movies a bit when Pierce Brosnon etc were Bond... friend at work has kindly bought me in Casino Royale and apparently Quantum of Solace is on its way too..
No running for me this weekend but restarting and refocusing next weekend
Good to see you back, NGUG. Us guys will just have to hang out together...
I'm being seriously distracted by my new 'cycle routes' book..there are several I'd like to run. I'm becoming obsessed by the long-range forecast in futile attempts to plan for a less-than-dreadful day. I'm going to have to just harden up, if I want to see any of them before next May...

If you're hanging around scratching your balls I'd be worried
Orbutt - I'm sure it'll be the contacts then. Thinking back when I had that problem I started putting...er...KY Jellyt on the contacts before running and it sorted it. Give it a try. Worst bit is buying the stuff...
Eggy - we can call into the pub when I'm in Glasgae. Maybe put a bit of Desmond Dekker on the jukebox*?
Holey - I've recorded my data in all sorts of ways. Everything uploads to Garmin Training Centre & Garmin Connect for starters. Two years ago I kept a folder with A4 sheets for each day and recorded the information in there. That had everything stored. This year I copied TD's master spreadsheet and then had a couple of others that drew on that for graphs or specific info. I was a bit mileage obsessed though and that might have caused me tgo ignore the early stages of injury in thew summer.
Not sure what I'll do for Paris/Berlin. I did buy a Nathan running log when I was in Auld Reekie and may start using that in a couple of weeks but doubtless spreadsheets will follow but perhaps without the overt comparisons to previous marathon training.
Pubs do have jukeboxes....full of CDs. It's a travesty.
I didn't drown on my 14k run...in fact it stopped raining halfway round which took my mind off the £500 bill I will be presented with later for work that's being done on my car today and left me free to listen to the revision chapter of socio-economic issues that affect investments, for an exam...
Orbutt - I had to play around a lot to get my HRM to be consistant. Too tight worked well (until I couldn't breath anymore, at which point I didn't really need it to tell me I was in trouble), and too loose was bad. Seems my chest shape was not ideal either. But finally I got it - and then I basically stopped using it anyway.
Orbutt - doubting the accuracy of your HRM because you don't conform to the 220-your age - guide is like saying there is something wrong with the amount of running shoes in a box because they have provided more than the statistical average number of feet than the population have (it's less than 2)!!
Just forget it. We are individual - averages are a mathematical extraction, not a description of what is real. Concentrate more on the reliability of the contacts on the HRM. The Garmin soft straps (1st gen) had real issues with static and sweat-bridging the contacts. I switched back to the original hard plastic straps but I believe the 2nd generation soft strap, where the transmitter attaches to the belt via two poppers, has fixed the issues related to unreliable readings.
Having good HR data is a valuable way of improving your training effectiveness, so i recommend fixing it, not ditching it Or grow a pair of boobs, although I doubt whether this will really contribute much towards athletic performance. No prizes in Paris for aesthetics.
Desmond Dekker - you're such a Rude Boy DLR. I guess that's my message to you...
Hey there NGUG. Lovely to hear from you again. Seen or heard from Fiona lately?
TD - hey TD no nothing from Fi recently on fb or here by the looks of things.. difficult to keep up with this thread though it moves so quickly... howz the knee any news you have or have had an MRI scan again?
Orbutt - I have problems with the ridgid plastic HR monitors re contact and weird readings and used to end up with some nasty chaffing marks as a result ... put me off slightly but my 310XT has a softer strap so am hoping that will be better.
Tricky - I'm afraid that you have drawn an incorrect conclusion from my statements. I don't doubt the accuracy because I don't conform to the 220 - age statistic. I doubt the accuracy because it gives me readings of 220 and 25 BPM. I also added that I don't conform to the calculation but this was aimed more at the notion of training within certain percentages of maximum Heart Rate, when the only way for me to find this value would be to undergo a VO2 Max test.
I'm pretty sure that it is a contact issue but I have had problems with both the Polar strap and the Garmin strap - both soft with poppers - and I got a few chafe marks too (ouch)
I'm trying to avoid growing boobs as I'm still working on getting rid of my old ones
Have you two considered wearing a bra? It holds the HRM in place beautifully
Actually, I believe there are athletic bras made with a HRM built into them. Now that's cool! And, in the dark, if you turn up the volume on your HRM while wearing one of these it also gives a good audio guide for the bloke to know if what he is doing is having the desired effect.
I am looking forward to the appearance of a good, chest strap free HRM. I dont really see why there is not one yet. I see no reason why the watch could not sense HR and oxygen saturation just sitting on your wrist, or with an plug in extension to a sensor on the nearest finger (like a conventional pulse oximeter).
OK, time to fess. Who has worn a HRM while 'getting down to business', all in the name of 'scientific research'. Hands up everyone, DV, you first, what with your proclivity for rubber and straps...
Orbutt - OK. But 220 and 25 are just misreadings. You can guesstimate your MHR (+/- 2-3%) by taking the highest HR you achieved in a shorter distance race (below 10K), where you pushed really hard towards the end. This probably equates to 95-96% MHR if you got to the extent where you could hardly string two words together. It's a bit easier to get to there than it is to get in a lab and go to 100%.
This is the hard strap - never had problems with it. Available from other retailers who contribute more tax revenue to HMRC UK.

Dannirr... I saw this, and thought of you...

Morning all. 9 miles beckons, in the pissing rain. I may drown...
Morning Holeymoley - have a look at Strava.com. If you have a garmin/other device you can upload it directly to the site.
I'll do your 9 miles YM if you do my 10 hour shift at work..........Its going to be one very long day..........And its a lovely bright, autumn day here too and I have to spend all day inside.........it'll be dark when I escape again........
Think I may be feeling sorry for myself.......
Simon - I'm no from Aberdeen, but I think a bus load had come down just for the cheap cinema night!
DLR - Always good to see some Bubbles.
Emmy - Software for big pharma, basically what I'm doing these days between coffee consumption.

TD - Sounds nice. My office is cramped cubby hole above a pub in Glasgow city centre. To be fair it's a decent pub, as long as you're a metaller.

It would also explain why I'm a girl in that survey

What are these bra things you speak off? I'll need to google that.
I really should try a heart rate monitor. The P&D stuff on it was very interesting, but I've never used on myself.

Does 'getting down to business' mean writing code? I'm pretty sure my heart rate isn't affected by that activity.
