Green Fairy, you are a star!! See, you found you part in the marathon, as a coach! Well done. I was desperate to see you as I was in a bad way at mile 15, but no luck. I wish you had shouted out to me well done Guide Dogs, you are looking good, that's who I was running for and even though I know you would be lying it would have been good to here. Wish you hadn't mentioned the Great south run, going to have to go and have a look now.

Toby 3 - my number was 5776, although I was originally told 1963, so not quite sure what happened in between times!

Dad - told you you would run another one!

Mike Frog - so you ran in the end then?

TraceyG - found Asda's!! (not during the marathon though!)

GF - It was lovely to meet you even thou I was expecting a lady lol. So now you will know who I am.

Sandi - What did you buy in Asda?

  • Options

Sandi - the GSR is only a measly 10 miles so even I manage that!  Sorry to have missed you.  How did you miss me!!????

TraceyG - ah yes, now a lady would have been wearing a dress, I was wearing a costume!image

Green Fairy... You are a LEGEND!!!! And will go down in the record books for your incedible kindness in helping TracyB to get through to the end.......and to the other runner.... who I am sure is just as appreciative.

Sandi........It was good to see you too!!! Had forgotten I'd met you......The brain has been mush since Sunday!!.........it was actually just after I saw Green Fairy. Think you were running on the wrong side of the road and missed him due to that. Fortunately I knew where to look for him. I needed the boost then from both him and the Fetchpoint just after that.

TracyB.........I just had a little weep at your video!

Redhead........Please message me thru RW with an e-mail address.......I found a photo of you in the collection my hubby took. Right at the begining so you still look lovely and fresh! Will send to you.

    Question

How long should it take to recover from a marathon ? I'm still really struggling with walking and going down stairs is just comical ! Any tips on recovery ?

  • Options

Hi Simon - try a couple of miles gentle jog around Wednesday or Thursday and you will feel much better after it.  It works for me anyway, even thoguh I don't really feel like doing it beforehand.  Like you I kind going down stairs is worst of all for the first couple of days.

  • Options

Green Fairy - I called out to you (approx. 2 hours, 40 mins  from start time) - and you cheered fantastically, I have entered Great South - have run it 5 times and really enjoy it - Though the weather is usually half the battle!

Scruffy Monkey - I think you were just behind me at 16 - 17 miles. Lots of people cheering were shouting for Maura (me), Fred and Scruffy Monkey.  I ended up with a 3 minute pitstoip a little further on so you probably finished ahead of me

Can I just say well done to everyone that finished on Sunday, you are all amazing.

I've been watching this forum for the last week now and I can't put it down! Big thanks to Dips for posting a last minute request for chip retrievers. I volunteered and I really had a fantastic day doing it, a completely unforgettable experience.

To be honest, I spent the last few weeks feeling very low for not entering this marathon and thinking that doing it any other year just won't be the same because it isn't the first one. But seeing everyone's elation at the finish; tired, emotional or buzzing, was very inspirational. You've all cured my sulks and I will definitely be entering next year. I've no idea how many of you I retrieved a chip from but thank you all so very much image

Oh, forgot, chicken salad sandwich, banana, shared a couple of jugs of pimms at OHSO on the beach then a lovely family meal at Donatello's before we headed home. Eyes were bigger than my belly though and I couldn't finish my meal!

Appetite well and truly back to normal now

Well done everyone and well done Brighton.  It was a fantastic day and the crowds were brilliant.  Not so sure about the sunshine but it felt good before and after the race!

A day of mixed emotions for me.  Finished in 3:05:02, a time I'm very happy with, but struggling to understand why the legs seized up in the way they did over the last 10 miles.  I picked up a cold in the final week and this was still lingering on the day - this may have been what caused the problems - but at the same time I was just happy to finsh and bag a GFA place.

All things considered I'm very happy and will remember the experience for a long time.

Green Fairy, what can I say.. you are a legend.. and to think how we bonded during those miles, when we didn't on the thread image I seriously could not have gone on without you as I was dreading the powerstation alone when I kept wanted to pass out, till I saw you.  Not the 2011 thread??!! Goodness.. how will people work for the next year?!!!

2btiny, you can dowload your video. Didn't mean to make you cry. GF just bloody made me cry again!

Muscles are fine, recovered. Ball of right foot still tender. Am poorly with reaction to over-active thyroid tabs - which also wouldnt have helped me Sunday. Still off work (although took leave) as everything's too much effort and will have to go back to bed after this note image Glorious sunshine and no energy for being out. It's a bad time to try to recover from a marathon, whilst having the thyroid prob, and reaction to the tablets image Also lost more weight, which yes could be from the marathon, and it takes ages to eat as I have to chew so much as throat doesn't like me swallowing.

Had fab plans this week for recovery: Out with son for my birthday dinner tonight, out with workfriend (actual birthday) tomorrow for lunch, OH over in the evening, day of Friday for London VLM expo/planet hollywood (free on tesco vouchers)/comedy club, Saturday cycle with son, and support OH in VLM on Sunday.... how I'm feeling sorry for self image

(((((Tracy))))) - You need to drop the things you can get out of this week. I think cycling with your son on Saturday is a no no. Go to bed and rest and then you can go out to dinner with your son this evening, maybe wear your medal image

TraceyB - to me you are what marathon running is all about those that face adversity and pull through it, you are more of an inspiration than the winner.

As TraceyG says chill out forget exercise this week and enjoy the time with your son.

TraceyB I am sure we will see you on the 2011 thread ???

Has anyone heard from JuliaT ??

TracyB - I would love to see you do Brighton in 2011, that is unless you get a VLM place.
  • Options

No no. sorry... maybe worded it wrong. Am not exercising! Am meant to be enjoying birthday tomorrow but am too poorly image - the cycle is the lowest priority, it was the partying/socialising that's the priority but looking like all I can do is lay in bed image

    2011 thread... hmmmm... thinking...

Dad, Julia did post on here, and she's doing great! Will tell her you're asking for her image

    Back to bed image

Tracy - take care of yourself, marathons take a lot out of you.

PP - For Goodness Shakes are my favourite! ChocoMalt everytime for me. Not a big fan of the berry.

I'm feeling surprisingly great, legs aren't too achey at all. Managed a 10 minute cycle and treadmill run last night followed by a monumental stretch...and I swam this morning. Dare I go out on a 2hr cycle this weekend with my club?

How is everyone this morning ?

I did a light jog with our Junior Club last night,
and heading off to the London Expo later today to collect my number.

Today is when the "marathon blues" normally kicks in so be aware, and maybe plan for another shorter race in the next couple of months to re-focus on.

    Morning all

Hope you are all starting to recover.

Tracey b-  well done for finishing, so many people would have given  up.

I had chips on the beach afterwards and chocolate, then went in the sea for a paddle, i now wish i had gone in a little further, as the legs would have recovered quicker. While I was paddling there was a bloke having a swim, Im sure it aided his recovery, but Im not that brave.

Green Fairy - see you at the Great South Run, this will be my fourth, I did think twice about doing it again because of the price, but I enjoy this one so much,so applied the day after last years.

Sandi - so glad you made it after all your injury/travel difficulties.

imageAfter being completely paranoid about picking up any infections in the run-up, constantly washing my hands and carrying anti-bacterial gel with me everywhere, I stupidly let my guard down on Monday. Took a walk round town to loosen up and must've picked up a bug, I spent all day yesterday from about 4am throwing up. Better this morning so just a 24hr thing, but important lesson learned about the post-marathon immunity dip.

Read on the Brighton Marathon website that crime/disorderliness for the city actually went down for the day, which is fantastic and bodes well for future runnings. The council apparently received only one complaint as well. image

Good luck and much respect to those running London in addition - I won't even run for a bus at the moment.

I have been so desperate to post my thoughts of the Brighton Marathon since I literally crossed the finish line but being computer-less at home and having a few days off work this is my first opportunity! image

Well I finished so I am super chuffed! I aimed for under 6 hours and came in with a chip time of 5hrs 27 mins! I had printed a pace band off optimistically for 5hr 48min and was chuffed to bits when I was ahead of time at each mile marker, gave up trying to slow myself down to match it and just went with it.  I actually could of got under 5hrs had I not have stopped to use the toilets 3 times (more paranoia than actually needing it which is very annoying when you've queued for +15mins!!) and I had to stop at St John's for foot vaseline 3 times as I realised on the way up towards Rottingdean I was getting some lovely blisters image ... it was funny as I realised just after the point when I was laughing and wondering why there were so many St. John's bods standing there with there hands held out - almost high fived them lol!! ... Lesson learnt there to pre-vaseline my toes A LOT next time!

No point me echoing what everyone else has said other than - I LOVED IT, crowds were great & loved high fiving everyone I possibly could (made all the easier by sticking to the edge as I was run/walking), felt so boosted every time someone shouted my name, had a cheeky drink of beer at 19.5 miles where my friends were cheering from - wasn't planned but it certainly perked me up!

Realised at the beginning I had checked in my arm-band which was full of all my energy sweets & glucose tab! DOH!! ...luckily I had pre-given a handfull to friends who were in the crowds so I made sure I didn't miss them and grabbed a handfull & ate them immediately, missing my mouth mostly (much to the amusement of my friends as I dropped over half!!)

Still on a high, loved it loved it loved it! ... Shame no-one warned about the pain on Monday morning!! Ended up taking emergency holiday on Tuesday and today my legs are functioning pretty well - am wearing flip flops to work today though which is a big no no but my toe nails have gone black on one foot and my foot is swollen and blistered on the other so I'd like to see someone pick an argument image

Pleased to see Tracy B and have a brief chat! ... and I'm so glad you finished image well done!!

Love the race photos too, and I found myself in Monday's argus on the back page (the proper sports pages image)

... so in short, loved it and can't wait for next year with a guaranteed PB and aiming for 4.30 and below.

    CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE!

  • Options

yes, I have post marathon blues! I want a PB!! Guess i'll have to sign up for another!

  • Options

I def have post marathon blues coz I can't run until my leg injury heals... taking the next 2 weeks off, then if still not recovered i'm off to the docs to try my best for an MRI referral!

Only 5 1/2 months until Abingdon so really want to get back out there and have another crack at training for sub 4...

Legs are doing good today post marathon and I REALLY want to go for a run image

  • Options

    Sarah

I know what you mean, I hope you had a good run, I think you finished about a minute before me looking at the finish times, cant wait for next year.

I have already found a half marathon in September that i am going to train for and aim for sub 2hrs.

    Hello Everyone,

My legs are feeling a lot better today and after a good nights sleep I'm ready to go again.

Which thread is everyone following for next year there seem to be 2, can't believe we have to wait a year.

I noticed some discussion about people cheating and I noticed 2 people who were behind me and then I overtook them later and they never passed me, don't know why they cheated as they only cheated themselves out of being marathoners, perhaps if they put a timing chip mat at the harbour would stop it.

Not sure whether to venture out for a run tomorrow or wait until I have finished my antibiotics and fully recover this time.
