    My goals have shifted abit

Dream is sub 3 , Happy 3:05 & Satisfied with 3:10 (PB). Also gets me Boston qualification time.

I followed Maidenhead 10 up with a  v. hilly 40miler in 6hrs & 1min (Grr not happy with that minute) on saturday and a  hilly 10K in 42min on monday.

I think I should start tapering soon image

We all have such amazing stories and everyone has obstacles at one time or another.  In the nicest possible way, its reassuring to know your not the only one.

Bradnor - both my children come down to watch the marathon and they LOVE it!  My son was only about 6 the first one he watched.  It was raining and he was soaked.  I thought he'd be whinging for England but he loved it. He is now 9 and my daughter is nearly 13.  They are really looking forward to it.

CC  - is the Saunders what used to be the Karrimor?  It was in our area a few years ago and a friend of mine did it.  I like the thought of a 2 day event but I do like a hot bath at night!

I like the mega off road stuff.  Mostly because I dont have to run fast on them!

Who else on here is on the red GFA start?

  • Options

Joe - a 40 miler and then a hilly 10k - taper you mad person!

Minni/Bradnor - I had a pretty miserable build up FLM 2008 too and possibly should not have run, there was so much other 'stuff' going on in my life. But we are almost at the start line now with good solid build ups behind us, as long as we are fit and well on the day and we pace/fuel properly then we will make up for it this year!

I am like Cragchick and others. My goals have shifted a bit since starting this experience. I need to remember my original ones sometimes and not get greedy/pace wrongly! That way I will do as Astride says and enjoy the experience and (to use a Rat phrase) if I leave a minute or two on the tarmac then it will make any 2010 target easier!

    Dream - 3.15
Realistic and very happy - 3.20
Satisfied (and happy) - better than FLM08 (3.30)

My MP miles today were 7.08 (that was too fast having not run for 2 days) 7.30, 7.26. Given then 3.20 requires 7.38mm then that seems realistic and allows for running slightly over distance, as I assume we all will (apart from the elites) Does that seem reasonable Liz?

Legs felt fine again today but I did have a big coughing fit after my run, I shall be careful.

Jason - good luck for Lochaber, you have come so far!! Best of luck in achieving your goals.

AGT - sorry you had a bad run. I don't think you will have lost fitness though, maybe just a bad one?

Jason - lurk away but remember to post your time on 27th April at least!

Astride - many a wise word in your last couple of posts. Are you doing the hospitality afterwards with Sho?

  • Options

Liz - your posts today got everyone thinking I see! Back on track with nutrition/hydration (only lapsed because we were in a hotel and it's harder to control) Pretty much organised for FLM and travel. Fatface is really stressed because no-one at the hotel will tell him if porridge is available at 5am!

Had the same symptoms as you but left with a dry cough, irritating at worst. I plan on slotting back into my schedule but not playing catch up?

Got to be honest and say that I only have one target - 3:14:59. Don't care if I go faster than that or not, just as long as it's that or better.

Some great goal setting going on! Well done!

Now make sure you have your race day nutrition sorted and you know where you can get LS drinks (5m, 10m, 15m, 19m, 23m) and water every mile after 3 miles. Make sure you know your plan! What gels you will carry and how.

Fat face- go and buy a travel rice cooker (argos) and cook your own porridge in your hotel room at 5am! Works a treat! Just remember to buy your milk and porridge too!

Sue: You should not run too over distance in the race, may be to start if you are forced to take the corners wide or you do your naughty weaving trick!

I will be at the expo on Friday and Saturday, on the LS stand or Adidas. So come and say hello!

    Liz

Thanks for words of encouragement re. the calf - physio has advised I continue with the x-training, stretching etc and try a run at the weekend, see how it feels and then make my decision as to whether to race or not. Scary stuff.

Andy - what was your physio's advice on your knee? Fingers crossed for you.

I keep clicking on the front page of the FLM website to see the countdown clock and make my heart skip a beat. Too much time on my hands with this taper...hope you're all managing to stay relaxed as the day gets closer!

Thanks for the continuing advice Liz, will come and say hi at the expo. I'll be the one with lots of bags of running gear I don't need and have succumbed to buying!

Oh Lord - a list. Clearly it is taper time!

I am still not 100%. Bar humbug. It's all in my head not and making me feel rather fuzzy. Cut my rep session down to 6 x 0.25 mile reps with 1 minute recovery.  Was going to do 8 but I could feel some tiredness creeping into the last rep (splits 1.30, 1.29, 1.30, 1.30, 1.29, 1.33) so I cut it short.

Hoping my legs feel better in a weeks time, she says with a hint of worry creeping into her voice.

    Fingers crossed for you Lizzie.

Sounds a bit similar to what i had Sue, i had a real muzzy head, thought i felt better but it seemed to return the next day. It lasted about a week so hopefully it will be out of the way by the big day and you know you have your best training banked.

  • Options

    Sue ,

You are being very sensible and cutting down your training when really now you can over do things. You will be fine come race day and it is a good time to have something if your going to have something if you get me!

You will be fine come race day, just make sure you run easy, or rest until you feel right, which should be by Monday.

Just keep your hydration up and fuel, and give your body the chance to attack the virus!

Chill, you will be fine, all the training is in the bag!

    Liz

My goals are 2:55 dream, sub 3 very happy, 3:10 satisfied. Trouble is going for sub 3 is going to be tough with no leeway for error!!

Also feeling a bit odd shall we say. Strange headaches, am starving all day and niggles. Am sure its all nerves building and the training coming out of the legs.

Hope you feel better soon Sue.

We have friends staying this weekend which I am starting to regret but they will understand as runners themselves.

Have persuaded a friend to collect my number for me, big relief as saves my legs and OH taking time off work in the week. Means we can get over to hertford on friday and relax a bit. I am going in on the club coach on marathon day from North herts, and OH following later on the train with the boys. I do hope he is going to manage them OK.

Club run for me tonight, 6-7 miles in rain it looks like. Hopefully a few MP miles, am doing only that and strides now after my race on Monday.

Right best get cooking boys' tea!

Lizzie- good luck with the run at the weekend, hope it's pain free

Ultrasound of my patella tendon today showed only a small amount of swelling and no tearing, hooray, the rest and ice is doing some good. BUT probing showed very painful regions elsewhere around the patella so they've squeezed me in a CAT scan tomorrow to have a better look at what's going on. In the mean time I'm on some powerful anti-inflams and more ice and more foam roller. I'm not allowed to bike or x-train. There's still hope, I must say it does feel improved today.

Still envious of the rest of you with your nice tapering runs.

    Andy

Sue - have confidence in your self and your training and rest - good that you listened to your body and stopped at 6 reps.

I did 12 reps as per the RW schedule.  It felt good and I stuck to around 7 min pace (although I made sure I wasnt running head wind for any of them - so cheating a bit).  Then when I had finished my 11 year old asked me to do a 1 mile run with him.  he wanted to beat his best time of 7:45.  We managed 7:25 and I was over the moon cos it actually felt really good and I felt so comfortable.  I think the reduction in mileage and having done the faster than MP sessions made MP seem so manageable - so I am buzzing now cos hopefully 7:40 pace will feel a doddle (well perhaps not quite, but you know what I mean)  on the day with the right taper - Sue - take note it will come right for us all.

Bought SIS gels today and just cant get any Lucozade ones - and even the website has sold out.  Anyone tried these and the LZ ones and can give a good comparison between the two.  If can get LZ at expo will use on day, otherwise will have to be SIS.  Going to try the SIS ones at the weekend on my last long (10 mile) run.  Am I gambling too much by swapping now?  Oh and by the way only experimented with LZ gel for the first time last weekend - but do usually have a full bottle of orange LZ sports on a long run, but have decided rather belatedly that I should use a gel.
  • Options
Julie, I've used Lucozade gels quite a bit, they're very thick and difficult to get out of the tube but easy on the stomach. I tried an SIS gel on my first 20 miler. They're gloopy and rather similar in consistency to wallpaper paste. It tasted vile and within minutes I had horrendous stomach cramps. I spent the whole afternoon in the bathroom. It was not pretty. I use High 5 now, they're really light and made with real fruit juice. Can be a bit messy if you're not careful when you open them, but they're really easy on the stomach.

The taper seems to be doing my legs wonders... so much so that I ran far too hard on my 'easy' runs on Monday and Tuesday which made yesterdays speed session very hard! Still I have learnt my lesson and will ensure I keep my easy runs easy from now on and just do a few stretches at MP to remind my legs what it feels like.

To all those who are suffering from lurgees - I think this is probably a good week to be ill, gives plenty of recovery time. I'm sure you'll be fighting fit by next Sunday.

Sue, like Jezza, I'm just popping in to say how well you're doing and remind you to think positive! Think of all the great runs you've done over the past few months rather than dwelling on the few that you're not happy with and get onto that start line with a clear vision in your mind as to what it'll look like and how it'll feel when you cross the finish line having acheived what you want. You'll fly on the 26th!!

cragchick - I think you have a point re niggles etc. I suspect I have a cold right now because I have relaxed mentally. It's like when you go on holiday and either sleep for the first few days or (like me) come down with somethng.

I am no worse today but no better either, symptoms in my head and nose now,I am snotty! Haven't decided whether to run today or not.  I have 35 mins easy on the schedule.

    Mitchie - enjoy the weekend.

Lorenzo - good point! I have been worrying about this weeks training going pear-shaped when I should look at the last 16 weeks as a whole.  FWIW I think you will hit your 'dream goal'.

Jezza - that's cheating! Is the weather forcast accurate yet do you think? Looks a bit warm.

Julie - I have at least 65 years worth of LS gels. Mail me with your address and I will post you some. I occasionally run with my 9 year old cycling beside me. Lovely!

    Andy - fingers crossed.

Bradnor - are you back on track now?

Apologies all - my 'i' button on the laptop has been 'stickied' by a small grubby child. You have to press really hard to get it to work!
