Just popped in to say good luck slowjoe.  I don't know if this is helpful or not but it took me months to be able to run 3 miles and not have to walk bits or fall over in a heap at the end.  My mistake was to go too fast at the outset and I slowed right down to just above walking pace.  When I got "comfortable" (its never really comfortable but when I didnt have jelly legs or gasping at the end) I started to get the mileage up.  I heard talk of 5k pace and marathon pace but I only had 1 pace - ie slow for about a year, and averaged 12 min miles.  The distance just started to increase quite quick from there on and when I managed 10 miles (gasp) I then felt able to pick the pace up a bit for shorter distances.  I'm still very slow but love running and now completed 5 marathons and about 20 HMs.  And I've only been last (jointly) in a race once so theres definately room for everyone out there.

Its the best thing I've ever done so stick at it and your reward when you cross your first finish line will be amazing.  Don't worry about walking bits either.   And the first 10 mins is always the hardest as your body warms up.

Hope your flu is better.   Keep at it!

    Hi SD

Just been out and did 3 x 6mins run and 1 walk

This is on a loop that used to take me 8 minutes.

Ive found that I can run - well stagger really - for 30 mins or so - but actually cover the ground quicker when I take walk breaks.

Am actually aiming for the - drum roll -

    Amsterdam Half Marathonimage

Its mid October - the bro in law lives there and me and the wife are gonna do it together

The wife ran Reading half a coupla years back but hasnt ran much since due to a neck injury of all things - we reckon we can run walk it below the cut off time of 3 hours.

    Wish us luck!!

You'll be fine - and nothing wrong with run/walk.  I got a massive 40min pb at London marathon last year by doing run 5mins/walk1.

    Enjoy! image

    SD

I seem to be coming on leaps and bounds with it.

Tonight I did a min of 2.4 altho it could have been 2.8 miles - a bit vague I know - in 23.30 mins .

    Im buzzing.

Good stuff, Slowjoe.  Are you managing okay in this heat?

I went to see a specialist yesterday about my back - he recommends I have cortisone injections.  I just want the pain to go away and to be able to get back into my running!  I'm sure I'm going to have to start again from scratch.

Im sure it will all come back nice and easy when u start again Sue.

As for the heat I work nights and go out at "lunchtime" 11pm last nightimage

Hi guys, been reading this thread quietly for a while now, and just wanted to say that it's taken me over 3 months but i finally managed 5k on Tuesday without walking image only thing is it took me 52mins which is so slow it's painful...but i know i couldn't have done the distance if i had tried to run faster. I usually do 16/17min miles image

I am adding interval sessions now to try and get my speed up, and it's hard work! But for those of you finding it hard to go for longer than 20mins, and saying you are going at a "slow" 12min mile, i would love to go that fast! So if you wanted to go further you could slow down even more and still be going faster than me image So basically i am jealous lol and well done for doing so well and trust me the 5k will come soon! Even if it's probably slower than walking pace like mine image

Hi all, am new to RW so am perusing all forums!!!

I am new to this running alrk but would like to say 8 weeks ago I couldn't run 350metres!!!   Seriously!!

Yesterday i did 5k Race for Life.....ok so it was pretty slow at 38 minutes but I 'ran' the whole way. One up hill bit almost killed me and i felt like I was jogging backwards almost but hey i didn't break into a walk!

So if I at a couple of stone over weight and the girl who was always last  on the school cross country run can do it then anyone can!!!

Well done RW4 - thats great news

shows there is hope for us all

Well done RW4 - I know what you mean. I could lose a stone (or two) and HATED running at school. Feared it, loathed it. And I can't believe it but it is possible to improve, and enjoy it! I think it was me that mentioned mapmyrun - its training log is great. I've been logging all my runs on it, and I've just looked back and seen that exactly a month ago today, I did one of my set 2-mile routes - did it today in 24 mins and I have improved by a whole four minutes! I think you gotta remember it's a long-term thing, and slow improvement's better than crashing and burning. Good luck! x

    Hi all,

First post at RW, started running yesterday doing the couch to 5k program. So far i'm enjoying it, just trying to not push myself too much although I am feeling it today haha.

My first goal is to be able to run 5K so thought i'd post in here as at the moment, I'm no where near it!

    Hi all

Have had a shocking couple of weeks.

Had man flu - then kicked the shower door when getting out and had 2 toes and the top of my foot turn purple.

    Everything ok now I think.

Out tomorrow night for a gentle jog with the dog.

    Hi Joe

Know how you feel as well as the dodgy ankle I have also had flu last week. How long should you give it before you run again after the flu as ankle not to bad now and itching to run again but don't want to make myself bad again.

Good luck for your jog with dog.

Hey Slowjoe maybe we should swap dogs image When I take mine out we get halfway and she just stops and toodles back home!

I ran my first EVER straight hour the other day, was so happy! "-" bet you guys today I'll be huffing and puffing through it though.

And Sassypurple I agree! Mapmyrun has made things much easier, its always nice to know how far we can go, my guesswork always seems to be way off the mark! image

Did my first proper race today! The Sherwood Pines 5K, in Sherwood Forest. (No men in green tights as far as I could see...)

I did it in 37 and a half mins, and crucially, I didn't come last, which was the main aim. It was harder than I thought it would be, probably on account of being overtaken by sprightly old codgers putting me to shame. But it was a great location and it hasn't put me off doing it again (I'd worried I'd be the worst one there, and while there were indeed a good number of professional-looking types, I'd say it was a good race for beginners).

Still not sure how I'll get any faster, but it's early days, and maybe you gotta just keep training to strengthen the muscles up - my legs just felt like jelly towards the end, but I didn't feel worn out otherwise.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

PS: I've got a tip - whether you need to or not, wear a support bandage on one leg, then when you're not doing very well, people will assume it's because you're injured, and not because you're crap! image

    Well done RW4, that's super!!!

HullCitysam, you know - I didn't know you could add in a run log on that website. Thanks for the tip! Will take that on board if you don't mind))) Can't wait to start maping week distances and see the improvements, however small, week by week!

Sassy & Slowjoe, am so sorry for your accidents!!! That sounds pretty brutal, for both of you. When do you think you'll be able to go out again Sassy, any clue or?

HullCitySam... just saw your last post! Well done on your PB, and LOLOLOLOLOL about the tip!!!!! Will definitely be doing that when I pluck up the courage to run my first race!!!!!!!!! image
