surely physiology, age and natural talent figure somewhere - if I trained full-time I wouldn't be able to do a 3.30 marathon
  • Options

run 70 miles a week for a couple of years, you'll be doing 3:15 at least

(not a criticism or value judgement on D2D's training, just interested.  My training is arguably even sillier, but i like it so i won't change it!).

  • Options

they do, but the "physiology" point is much quicker than people think.

training "norms" have changed a lot.  25 years ago, people did MUCH more training, and 2 hours 50 was seen as a fairly average marathon time.  nowadays, people do much less, and 3 hours is seen as exceptionally good (for a male)

    but that's a different discussion!

how about an experiment B.  tell me what training you do now, strictly follow the 2-year programme i will make up, and i guarantee that you will get sub 3:30 in the paris marathon 2011.  that's assuming you're 38 or under on the day.  if not, we'll need to age adjust it..!
  • Options

Yes B....how about running 70 miles every week for the next 2 years?image

  • Options

well, with a build up, depending what your mileage is now..!

  • Options

Well, I am impressed with your dedication, that is for sure.

I won't lie, I certainly don't feel that "at one" with running...just a nice little hobby! Though I would like to get better, but not if I have to do 70 miles a week...how the hell do people find the time??....though I suppose if people love it, they make the time eh?

  • Options

Ha....that's half the problem...I don't have a set finish time, but probably an hour....I start at 7-30 too (getting up at 6 to walk the dog first) so there is no way I could run before work LOL!

Can I ask if you don't get bored with the same routes?  I know you probably vary them, but you must obviously repeat some of them.  In the 12 months since I started I am pig sick of the same routes, and I have loads!

Are you in a running club???

You saying I got swine flu?????image

nah...don't be daft!   Enjoy your run though.

*picks self up off floor* 70 miles a week for 2 years! I don't want to run fast that much, I would like to do a sub-4 hour marathon though and I am already over 38! When I got my half mara PB I was doing 40 or so miles per week plus weights/core work and that was a huge commitment, but doable. At the moment I am getting back into consistent mileage after ITB problems so just building up again...

    B...I totally agree!

Am afew years younger, but have husband, dog, and work long hours.  I got a bad hip last year with pushing myself too hard I think, and have had to be careful.  Only been at it a year so don't feel I have that level of commitment, and to be honest don't reckon I ever will.  I would totally love to do sub 4 hours but I don't reckon it would happen this year, maybe in the future "if" I train properly!  I aim to go out 4 times a week, but in reality it is not always as many as 4, and I certainly would not want to do any more than that.

That's not to say I don't admire people with the dedication like D2D obviously has.  I just wish I had more of itimage!

  • Options

LOL...no danger of me pushing myself too hard D2D...don't you worry about that!

Yeah, I suppose I have not got "that" many responsibilities yet, i.e kids....that's why I am trying to run loads of marathons now...as I don't see that happening if I have kids, somehowimage.  Does your boyfriend run?   Also..do you normally run at the same pace???  How long did you run for tonight??

I bow to your expertise, so am after any tips that you can give me on running/motivation in general...not that you need much motivation by the sounds of it.  Would you honestly still go out for a run if it was blowing a gale and sideways wind?  Do you go to the gym to run if the weather is too bad????  Sorry...lots of questions!

So....you bought a gillet?  Is it waterprooof or just to keep the chill out?  I tend to over heat at this time of year and wear t-shirts mostly....though I can see how a gillet could be useful......You really are hard core you....a muddy run on boxing day??? !!! I thought I was good for doing a 14 miler on New Years day!

Also...if you run every day, how do you go on about drinking? (booze)...or are you teetotal?

Red - I get quite bored of running the same routes too. That's what I like about being in a running club - at least having people around to chat to breaks the boredom for me. Plus I do a bit of mountain running and you never get bored doing that!

I can honestly say that I have never cancelled a run because of the weather - I've even run in ice and snow. It makes you feel really hardcore when you're out on a day like that image

D2D - do you mind me asking how you fit in 70 miles a week? At the minute I do about 40 and it breaks down as: Mon (hills/speedwork) 6-7, Tues (recovery) 3, Weds (speedwork) 6-7, Fri (steady) 9-10, Sat (steady) 5, Sun (long) 13-15. I've been trying to work out how I could increase to 50-55 (am thinking of adding extra miles to mon and weds) but sqeezing in 70 seems impossible. I guess it's all about commitment...

    Hi Ferdy

Yes, good idea about the club, I might consider that, but it's difficult with my job sometimes.  I was also considering getting in the car and driving somewhere for a change, though I know that sounds a bit silly!

I am terrible for cancelling on account of the weather! I too have run in snow and ice, but have also cancelled runs for a bit of drizzle! Just an excuse really, pathetic.  Sometimes I get myself in these "can't be bothered" moods, and don't know how to get out of them.

Blimey, looking at your plan I don't know how you would fit anything more in!  The only thing I can suggest is maybe increasing the distance of the longest run...but blimey, that would be punishing!

    Hya

Wow, you are the picture of virtue...loads of running in all weathers and no booze or burgers!!  What's left?  Only joking..I bet you feel great for it.  I don't eat a lot of meat and don't drink much these days, not really bothered to be honest, but I do like a glass of wine if we go out for a meal.....but I don't tend to base my social life around boozing anymore (boring old fart that I am!)

Yes, good point about being visible.  I have a Ron Hill bright yellow jacket with a flashing light on the back! It's great for the Winter, but a bit too warm to wear at this time of year, might look into a gillet or high viz vest, though it's normally still light when I get back...don't run as long as you LOL!

Don't you find wet feet difficult in the heavy rain?  That is the only thing that puts me off running in heavy rain.  Not so much getting wet but my feet getting wet.  Does that sound odd? I am blister prone anyway, and am paranoid about getting even more if I get wet feetimage

  • Options

RP - I hate wet feet too but that only happens if it's really heavy rain. And I love my gilets. I have a couple of jackets which convert into gilets - if you get too warm mid-run, you just zip the sleeves off!

    Hi Ferdy

Here is a question for you then, as you are obviously far more hardy than meimage...Have you found a proper waterproof jacket at all?  My Ron Hill one is meant to be waterproof and windproof.  It is a good jacket, but I got caught in a torrential downpour once (it was not raining when I left the house lol) and I was soaked underneath, so it's definatley not properly waterproof.  What do you wear?

  • Options

Oh NO!  No RW access...how will you cope?  I think I would quit my job if they did that to me LOL!

No, I think you have the right attitude re booze and stuff.   I don't bother much either, not because I object morally or anything, but I feel so crap the next day.  As I have got a bit older my hangovers kill me, and it can take days to get back to normal, so it's just not worth it.  I like to have a blow out on special occasions (the last one being the night of the marathon!).....but other than that I can take it or leave it, and normally leave it!  Unfortunately in this country we have a binge drink mentalitiy, and it's not attractive.

Funny enough I did not get any blisters on the marathon (wore Asics 1130 trainers)....but since then have terrible trouble with the toe next to my big toe and the one next down(only on one foot though!)....on long runs I tape my feet up as a precaution.  Which trainers do you like?  I treated myself to some lovely Mizuno wave Elixir 4's last weekend, but have not tried them yet.  They feel as light as a feather though.

Ouch...your feet sound sore!  I can recommend that Savlon spray to dry them out you know.  I think it must contain iodene as it goes yellow, but somebody recommended it to me and it does work.  I always try and let the air to my blisters (boy have I had a few!)

    Hi there

Bummer about the blister.  Hope it gets better soon.  Reebok trainers?  Well, I did not expect you to say that!  Not that there is anything wrong with them, but I just did not even realise they even made specialist running shoes, and you don't hear people mention them very often.  Whatever works for you though.  Yes, I bet you get through stacks of trainers with the mileage you do!

Sorry to hear you had a bad run...must have been all that virtual food we scoffed the other dayimage!

    Yes, and you...happy runningimage!

Hey, thought i'd catch up on where the thread went after i got myself off to bed on thursday....well it seemed to divert from food to training....D2D you sound like you've built up a really solid base and have a really healthy attitude to your diet and running.....

I'm 25 and hardly drink....i actually really don't like it and am thinking about just giving it up completely, i've had 1 gladd of wine in the past 3 months and thats only because a friend came over and bought a bottle and i felt bad for not drinking with her....

How do you find other people react to it? Have friends accepted it or do they still try and convince you to have 1 or 2??

I really want to up my running to see how good i can get, just lots of gentle runs each day and a longer one at the weekend for a few months, i just need to get into a routine, sounds like you're well and truly into it D2D!

Oh, by the way, fraser island was amazing, if you ever go to oz i highly recommend it, really remote, we camped on the beach, swam in completely clear lakes and got scared by dingoes! Loved it!

Also, sorry for bringing the thread back to food but D2D if you run every evening what time do you have dinner? Do you cook when you get back?
