Pirate Mentors / Mentorees 2011

Lots of newbie pirate fodder turning up for Outlaw and Regensburg.

I found having a mentor last year really useful to avoid the same old mistakes, or just to confirm what I was doing was OK.....

last years thread....

Anyone fancy being mentor?? If so you can let people know here......

Otherwise, if you are looking for a mentor, you can also try PMing a pirate you fancy, (i who you feel may have something to offer) they may say yes, they may say no, (as they may already have mentorees, or may now be doing other stuff...)

  • I've just completed my first IM distance event last week at the Outlaw in a time way above my original expectations. I targeted 13 hrs but my day couldn't have gone any better and I came in at 11hr28mins. Over the moon.

I'm in for Regensburg next year, I'm very competative with myself and have another target now for the IM race in 2011. I'm based in Cheshire and would love someone more experienced than me to chew the fat with, look at training and try to get me around in 11 hrs!!!!! I can dream can't I?
  • Glad to been of some use image

Am happy to help again, but won't write training plans, am just there if you need to talk things through.

  • I to have just completed my first IM distance event last week at the Outlaw in a time way below my original expectations. I targeted 14 hrs but I came in at 15hr22mins after blowing up in the run. I'm also on for Regensburg next year, I'm very competative with myself and have another target now for the IM race in 2011 off 12 hours.

Live in Sheffield and looking for help with crawl, but cracked or cracked up the rest, depending on your point of view. Had a mentor last year and hopefully he will still play and would love to ever mentor or mentee anyone up for a IM.

  • image OH I also can't spell for toffee hence the half nicking Cona's post I'm sure he won't mind.
  • I need help in how to balance training for an Ironman and an ultra at the same time..............I think the ultra will be 5  weeks after the IMimage

you know where I am, not doing plans but can review and comment and am in Cheshire. I can chew fat with the best of them
  • Im more than happy to help anyone, probably not best if youre ultra competitive and into very specific focussed training as im more laid back so probably better suited to beginners.   Happy to offer lots of advice and guidance, look tat/critique training approach/plans etc.

Its worth pointing out my view that a mentor is pretty much the above and differs from a coach in that a coach is a lot more hands on, provides and checks up on training plans etc.
  • I'm happy to help too in pretty much the same way Barley said.
  • Rosey, that'd be great. Don't need a plan but always worth talking through what I've done this year and looking at where best changes could be made, also some company on those lonely rides if we we're both planning on going out at the same time. Will drop you a PM over the coming weeks if that's ok?
  • Cona, always willing to offer advice if you need it. Mail me or facebook!

If anyone is interested in plans, I am setting up my own coaching business at the moment, as well as coaching for a well known coaching company (i know it is frowned upon to advertise but I am a regular contributor to the forums) so if anyone is after a more professional approach and wants to know more, please feel free to PM me.

  • Hi I am looking for some mentoring - Ideally to review training plans I've put together and advise how to go faster to beat the cut off's.

I'm not currently very structured and am just sort of going out and doing stuff...

Any one up for the challenge?
  • The way a mentor would work really is to help the new guys avoid the mistakes at the first time around, this means that some of the guys that just did Roth, IMUK and Outlaw are more than capable of helping the new ones do this, you don't have to sort plans out and critique, just chat to people over email and be a sounding board, if there is something you don't know, point them to the forum, thats what its for.

Cona, will be riding I hope over the next few weeks regularly, did a nice hilly 85 today round Cheshire and you are more than welcome to join in. We can chat then or after over coffee/cake.

  • I'm taking Roseys hint.....

    I'm free for a novice........image

  • Lol, OC and ShuffleB you guys should really meet up....image
  • image Cake and coffee in the same sentance. image Coffee.

Doozer feel free to spam my when your set up mate.

  • Taking the hint as well ....

I did my first IM this year at Roth and I'm slow and carp but if anyone new has questions and what not, I'm in.

I might have questions myself on how to de-slow myself! image

  • Pkim, just seeing you going the other way at Bala, might I suggest taking your hands OFF the brakes when going downhill. image

She doesn't listen to a word I say!!!
And unfortunately I normally say it 1/2 way up a loooooong hill and it prompts a sense of humour failure...image

  • I've only done one but more than happy to help anyone. Good advise I received last year was

"I reckon you should just pick someone that you like the sound of on here, or someone who sounds like they are coming from the same place, or someone who is where you'd like to be, or something like that "

I looked at those volunteering, read thier race reports and tried to find someone who had been in a similar position to me. Worked for me image

  • Happy to offer myself as a mentor - only been doing tris a couple of years,  but completed IMNZ this year so I can definitely advise on newbie mistakes and faux pas image as I've probably made them all in the very recent past. I'm sailing with the pirate ship to Regensberg, based in Edinburgh, but spend quite a bit of time in Birmingham.

Coaching wise, I have an actual coach of my own (I know, get me!) so probably can comment a bit on training plans as I follow a very structured plan, so should theoretically know what a good one looks like.

I'm female, mid thirties, believe that any ride over 2.5 hours should have a mandatory cake stop, and that a tri is a good warm up for some full-on pub action. I can't advise on serious bike porn or help anyone crack 10 hours, but I might be able to help someone splash, wobble and plod through their first IM. Here ends the party political broadcast image

  • I'm not sure if its a mentor i need but i am looking to try and go under 12:30 so could do with someone more experienced to talk things over with

alternatively i am quite experienced so am willing to help others image

  • IPM - like the new name by the way - I think that was me that said that and I still stand by it - I preferred to be in control and pick a mentor myself, rather than have someone offer who I didn't really want, or whose ideas/experience weren't the same as mine

I'm happy to mentor again, but of course I've retired image
  • I am free for stupid questions image Have done 2 now, one on crap training that I made up myself and one with a bit of advice, which was mainly "get out and effing train"

I am now a marathon runner.
