Great result getting sub 90 marrows. It was a target now achieved.

  • Options

Congrats on the sub 90 Marrows. Will you be taking up your Champs start place?

PMJ - sounds like a nighttime marathon might be your best bet, or perhaps one that you can weave into a business trip. If Sunday long runs are the problem, perhaps you could say you've listened to her and decided to do them on a Saturday.image

Where's Poacher's report from Sunday? Have I missed it?

9 hilly miles in the mist this morning. Had to go cautiously as visibility wasn't great so pleased with a 7:45 average pace.

Will be a 4.30am alarm clock wake up call tomorrow, but unfortunately it's to catch a silly o'clock train rather than the fun of getting out there and posting before Gul gets back.

    Congratulations, Marrows!

And commiserations to Abbers (although you sound better off away from that charming lot) and to SJ's toe.  Ouch.

Lorenzo, I looked at business but my April trip is to Texas in April and it is too hot already by then. I already do a Saturday run but she is asleep then so doesn't notice when I am back by 10am but the real issue is such as the 20 mile race I do for 20@MP and it starts at 9am so I am not back till 12 noon after a drive back. If I did a local 20 mile run starting at 7:30 am I'd be back and showered by 10:30 when she is back from mass.

PMJ, tell her you're thinking of doing an ironman race - she'll soon be encouraging you to stick to marathons.

Marrows, excellent HMing. How close was it to 90? Good luck with the job hunting too.

Still resting my toe and rehab-ing via large quantities of alcohol and cheesecake (And homemade fish pie).

Marrows - excellent result with the sub-90 at Oxford. It's a target I've long cherished and oddly, got as close as I ever have at Oxford 2 years ago, missing out by 22 secs. It's a quick course, even if access to the Kassam is a bit of a nightmare. Good luck with your job hunt too!

    Nice PB Marrows, well done.

Sorry to hear about the redundancy Abbers.

Double ouch on the big toe Slokey, the recovery sounds about right though.

PMJ, I know all about running under the radar. Those very early medium and long runs can become a bit of a slog.

Just ticking over here with the final week of my taper, 6 miles yesterday with a couple at mp which typically felt way too fast on heavy legs and 5 easy today on slightly fatigued quads which ain't great.

The good news is no problems with the calf.

I've had 16 weeks of great training following the P&D 70-85 plan but a poor couple of weeks in the taper and suddenly I feel I've not done enough.

    Taper madness me thinks!

Marrows - My friend did 89:58 last year for the Jsy half and ran 3:11 in Berlin a few weeks ago after 3:15 in Boston in April. She has improved no end and credits a lot of her improvement to sessions on the Eliptigo bike.

Abbers - That is so close. I raced my first proper half in June 2012 and did 90:30 then didn't race a half again until Nov 13 and did 89:05. I felt that I ran within myself on a hilly course and regretted not aiming for a quicker time but always good to achieve a primary goal. You'll get there! I was tempted to go for a 86/87 next month but have opted for pacing a group of friends instead who are aiming for sub 1:50. I will probably race a half next year all being well.

SJ - Some nice rehab-ing going on there!

Lorenzo - Again, some more nice miles banked.

I went out on a work meal/pi$$ up last night with a colleague over from SA and some Jsy colleagues. Needless to say it was a great night but could have done without the extra pints on top of copious amounts of wine and had back to back interviews today and meetings which left me feeling less than sharp but my improved endurance got me through the day. image

Got home and felt very dreary but went out for a lovely 5k jog along the beach and was glad I did as I felt human again afterwards. Looking forward to my 2nd double of the week tomorrow. Hope the wind drops.

Sorry to have fallen off the thread again, but have been trying to keep reading each day even if not time to post. Lots going on as usual here.

Poacher, well done on the qualifying effort! Glad you avoided the brass band on this one.

Abbers, real bummer about the job. Hope you come out on top in then end!

SJ, horrible luck!image You were on such a roll this year. Sorry to hear about the toe. Hope it comes around quickly.

Moof, great news on the calf. And yes, you've got taper madness!

    Marrows, awesome racing!

PMJ, my wife isn't a fan of my running. I commonly get the "why can't you just do a normal run?" Now understand normal run to her = 30 minutes.image

Final week of taper half done. Had a really nice 13 miler Sunday P&D style and just got in my final dress rehearsal run like Moof. My 2 miles at MP worked out at 7:08/7:10 on a hot 78 degree day...miles didn't feel fast as my normal subLT pace is 6:50ish. Plan for Sunday is try starting at 7:15 and see how my HR is doing and I am generally feeling. Dial up or down accordingly. Have checked the weather about 1000 times this week. Forecast has come around from originally being mid70s and sunny (sh*t!) to a more modest 55 and partly cloudy as of today's prediction (better!). The madness is in my bones!!!!!!

Leslie - well done on plugging away.
Abbers - charming letter! Good luck with the job hunting.
marrows - congrats on the sub 90.
Jools - are you feeling confident for Frankfurt?
PMJ - Shakespeare spring marathon is on a Saturday, but of course that doesn't help with sneaking in all the training and your 20 miles @ MP! It's 21 weeks and a couple of days to go to the raceway mara, so I would like to start training at the beginning of November, but still undecided.
Lorenzo - you beat me this morning - not up till 4:45.
SJ - hope the toe heals quickly.
moof - hope things come together on Sunday.
GM - recover well with today's double!
VTr - nearly there now - good luck!
    4 recovery miles d&d.

Good luck to Moof and VTR this weekend!! Who else is racing and what are all of your targets? C'mon, give me some vicarious running fun....

I have the same "problem" with a non-running partner. You end up sounding like a nutter trying to explain why you need to get out and train -"because I'm a runner, it's what I am"

Rehab took the form of a pub quiz last night with two of my sons. We came second and were in the money! Trying to keep it quiet that the place was nearly empty and the second place was out of 2 teams. image

    Morning all!

PMJ - There are many great things about it, e.g. it's a fast course with no long boring stretches, but I think you were asking for bad tales. So... The mile markers were all over the place: I reached mile 1 in 5:40 and had a despondent patch after reaching 10 miles with 1:11:20 on my watch (no GPS).  The start was delayed 20 minutes because of the park & ride trouble so I got very cold and had numb legs for the first 3-4 miles.  Then there was a band on Abingdon Rd trying to blast my left eardrum through my head and out the other side.
Lorenzo - yes I want to do London again.  I already had a marathon qualifying time (3:09)image! Hope you're having a good snooze on the train.
Moof, VTR - good luck! I look forward to hearing how it goes.  I make that a 3:10 target for VTR and moof..?
SlokeyJoe - 35 seconds.  What's that stat that does the rounds about how many times you break your toes without even realising it?  Congratulations on the pub quiz. Did you cheat?

Just easy slow running this week between races, which is lucky: on Monday in dark and rain, I felt something soft bump on my knee, looked round and saw I had mowed down a toddler who was well padded in winter clothes but bawled plenty.

  • Options

Marrows the Merciless! Beware yonder toddlers....

35 seconds is loads. And no, even I don't need to cheat to come last image

Marrows - The toddler incident is bizarre, be careful you could have injured yourself badly there!image And yes, 35 seconds is plenty.

    Leslie - 5:30 a.m.! I struggled to wake up at 7:30 this a.m.!

Gul - Meant to say that 3k you did yesterday looked good to me especially so soon after your marathon.

I'll set off at 2.55 pace (6.40mm) and see how that feels, if it's too much effort I'll carry on regardless and die a thousand deaths in the last 10k. image

all the best to the Abo-ers !

PMJ - I thought you did long runs midweek ? Anyway, looks like you need to do them early Saturdays (rather than Sundays) or do them really early Sundays. If you do go for another, dont start too early and dont do the 20M race, simples (you have no handbrake !).

Nice one Marrows. To be honest I thought youu had already gone under 90!

Had a great weekend in York spectating at the marathon.

Rase Jase was nothing short of brilliant. Managed to see him 3 times but he got to the end before we did so missed the finishing straight. He even did some high fiving along the way. Makes you wonder if he actually tried hard enough. image

Caught Poacher 4 times and he showed no signs of struggling either. Glad our quick snog at 16 miles didn't last longer otherwise he might have missed that Comrades seeding!!

My friend Mon ran a pb in 3:19, the cool weather definitely suiting her.

Lastly, Malcs (from the 3:30 asics fame) ran 3:14.

It was very exciting and pleasing to see everyone reach their targets.

I then had my own marathon drinking with moz... image

Good luck with that quest BI!!

Marrows - you mowed down a toddler who was out in the dark and the rain?! Where on earth were his / her parents????

Leslie H - I can recommend the Petzl head torch with a battery holder that clips to your shorts. Has lasted at least 3 years (if not more) and only needs a new battery every so often.

    SJ - podium finish again!!!

Minni - sounds a brill weekend. Having read RJ's account of the race, I reckon he tried pretty hard!

Up in Lancaster at the mo having come via Wakefield and Bradford. Planning a gentle run along the river tomorrow morning before heading back for younger Lorenzito's birthday. On his birthday wish list? A set of running spikes and an entry into a junior duathlon - that's my boy!!! image

So tired I now feel physically sick, will have a read back anon and pen a York mara report. It won't be as interesting as what Jase has to say. Legendino that fella!

Seriously, ((Abbers/BI)) - it will come good, maybe in an unexpected way

Slokey - quality foot porn image any close ups of the bloodier bits?

Back to Africa Training Camp in the morning image maybe Charleston Girl will have a new dance to break the boredom in the world's dullest, sweatiest gym image

Leslie - well done on reaching your target.
SJ - 2nd place sounds impressive.
marrows - I narrowly missed a head-on collision with an adult the other week.
Minni - sounds like you had a great time in York.
Good luck to the Abo crew - bit of a smackdown coming up, I sense.
    Lorenzo - a proud dad!
Scary to think RJ is only 20 mins off the WR now!
Poacher - race report and more bizarre tales from Africa Training Camp - what a treat to look forward to!
    10 easy miles d&d.

Good luck, marathon runners.  I hope you and the road will be very happy together.

There's an empty hotel room, well placed for spectators ("our cancellation policy is 48 hours, not 24, you loser").  Let me know if you could use it.

Tricky business on the domestic front, PMJ.  I've always felt that the impressive runners aren't the quick ones (any eejit can run fast).  It's those who somehow smuggle their training through the cracks between the demands of partners, kids, jobs & lives etc.
